What's with becoming a boxer ??

I've seen him on Friday night fights a few times Monkey. He's very promising. Hoppa and SBW would be wasting everyone's time - your guy would bomb them out pretty early on. Haumono would be a lot more competitive if he was at his peak.

What's the plan for Big Daddy? I saw he won the Commonwealth title. Is he planning to fight OS?

yeah mate he has a title fight on the 11/12 for the commonwealth title it's on fox at 930pm on the Eurosport channel

New South Wales hard men Paul Gallen and Greg Bird are the latest league stars to have signed on for December's Fight for Life.

All Black hooker Hika Elliot and Blues utility back Rene Ranger will also take part in the Rugby vs League showdown.

Gallen has played 14 Origin matches for New South Wales along with 22 tests for Australia including the side's recent 18-10 win over New Zealand.

Bird also played in the Townsville test and has lined up for New South Wales on 11 occasions.

They have been joined by three former stars with 35-test All Black Carlos Spencer, 22-test lock Troy Flavell and Kiwis great Jarrod McCracken all donning the gloves.

Former Kangaroos international Willie Mason will headline the event for the league team.

The boxing event, which races money in aid of the Prostate Cancer Foundation, takes place on December 15th at The Trusts Arena in Waitakere.

Fight For Life organiser Dean Lonergan said the standard of athletes has set a new standard for the charity event.

"The standard of the athletes prepared to put their bodies on the line continues to amaze me," Lonergan said. "The fact that we have guys who played in State of Origin this year and another two who starred in the Super 15 is setting new ground for the Woodstock Honey Fight for Life.

"This event has been seen as something of a rite of passage event for former players in the past but this card proves that guys who are still at their peak in their sports want to get in on the action and do their part for the event.

"People can be pretty cynical when it comes to how they view footballers. It's events like this though that helps break down stereotypes of athletes being all about themselves. In fact, it blows that tired argument right out of the water," said Lonergan.

Ranger, who played three tests for the All Blacks in 2010, said the event presents an opportunity to get into peak condition ahead of next year's Super 15 season as he fights to reclaim his All Blacks spot.

"My Super Rugby coaches always give me heaps about making sure I turn up to preseason in good condition," he said. "So this way I figure that not only do I get to take on a new challenge in boxing, I will also keep my coach happy by turning up to preseason fit!

"Boxing training is so different to anything we actually do with rugby. It is high intensity for 2 minutes at a time. In rugby you are only every really going full noise for a matter of seconds so this will definitely help build up my base fitness. I also think that it will add something mentally. There is nowhere to hide in the boxing ring. You can't let your mates do the work for you. It is just you and your opponent."

Well done to everyone involved for raising money and awareness for prostate cancer.

No problem with these celebrity bouts for charity. They are always entertaining. Different kettle compared to blokes scoring bouts they don't deserve…..

That big daddy hits hard but has very sloppy technique. Good luck to him though.

I'm not sure you need that great a technique these days in Heavyweight boxing… At least his management are bringing up the ranks in a fairly smart way. He'd probably benefit from some bouts against a few veteran Yanks after his upcoming fight.

bit suprised Jarod Mc Cracken in there.
considering he suffered a neck injury which ended his footy playing days whilst at wests-tigers.

I reckon the thinking of going to boxing is that they have an exposure to it for their fitness training, and as greatr athletes they can go ok against anyone except the really good.

Haumono and Mundine of course are different given they grew up in the ring and have a pretty sound base.

Mundine is very good, just not as good as he thinks he is, he is far more than a side show, he has beat Danny Green and Danial Geale, albeit controversially.

SBW to date has had ridiculous fights and Botha is less ridiculous, but his best days were in the nineties, hardly a ridgy didge fight.

Hoppa to his credit didn't start right at the bottom but did fight in clubs rather than the the big pay day, he fought the likes of Bob Mirovic and even went and fought a respected Yank whose name escapes me, and lost.

Oliver McCall… Hoppa made it to round 2\. That was probably the reverse of what normally happens - McCall in LV was a pretty big fight for a guy who the fight before was at Manly Leagues.

The event will be televised in Australia on Main Event and also feature NRL stars Greg Bird, Willie Mason and Manu Vatuvei.

Whether its free or you have to pay is the next Q?

Thanks WT4life. I would be very surprised if it wasn't pay-per-view because it is on Main Event channel. Foxtel don't give anything away for free the mongrels.

Bird won by a controversial decision
The Beast (Manu) beat some NZ Olympic rower
Gallen surprisingly won every round considering the wraps on the Allblack he fought who had won 60 odd martial arts fights
Carlos Spencer and McCracken didn't wear any headgear with Spencer winning a dirty fight with McCracken elbowing, head butting and hitting Spencer on the back of the head, some how he was never deducted any points. McCracken personally raised 38k for prostrate cancer.
Big Willie also didn't wear any headgear and his fight with Troy Flavell was a draw.

I only saw Gallen and Bird. God knows how Bird won - I guess 2 points deduction makes a huge difference in a short bout. Gallen looked okay actually. Seemed to have some decent boxing skills.

Haumono won the vacant OPBF (that's the Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation if you're playing at home - it's part of the WBC family) by beating the previously undefeated Kyotaro Fujimoto in a Rd 5 KO.

Saw the Big Daddy fight a month or so ago. A bit of a farce as the original opponent withdrew and Browne was fighting some last-minute Yank filler. Browne was clearly superior to him but made heavy weather of it. I guess it is possible he lowered his standards to suit the fight but he'd want to get a bit sharper if he's going to progress.

You still need some…he is entertaining but would get his are handed to him by the top boys. He has a long way to go IMO.
