Ive said it before and i'll say it again (broken record) The club doesn't stand for anything! We are Rugby Leagues nomads and until we change that we will keep getting the same culture over and over and over......
I just see that as another excuse for players not performing well enough. You can can blame culture, accepting mediocrity etc but the roster is not good enough to compete consistently against better ones - and there are arguably at least eight of those.
No team with Packer, Reynolds, Mybe - and have to add Brooks in his current form - as their biggest money earners could considered top eight standard in 2020.
Under the same home ground circumstances in 2005/10/11 We had a team of players that competed and achieved a level of success - then we we entered the aftermath of salary cap stuff up orchestrated by Humphries/Sheens, board division, and series of unfortunate events all too well discussed over and over again.
We are now financially sound, we havnt had any stability since Sheens to build a decent roster and Cleary left us with another road block to overcome hence our current predicament - that's how I see it.
Its not an excuse at all. This club needed (and i believe Madge knows it and is trying to achieve it) gutting. The teams you speak of had some great juniors come through and for some reason those junior systems were allowed to fade away which in the end has resulted in mediocre signings and a constant desire to change the coach when things haven't gone well. Its taken until the last 18 months for recognition that our junior system had gone to poo and Madge and Hartigan are setting about changing it, hence the reason for constant signings of highly thought of young recruits. We have a junior system as alluded to by another forum member that is the 3rd biggest in NSW, yet so many of those kids go elsewhere. They don't want to play for Wests Tigers. Now why would that be? Maybe it is because the club is owned by Ashfield which i have no issue with, is based at Concord, plays some games at Leichhardt, some at Campbelltown and some in Parramatta.
If you're a young kid coming through in say Parra or Penrith juniors, then what is the attraction to leave those clubs and play for Wests Tigers? It could only be opportunity or money, because there is absolutely nothing in our recent history with our reputation as a perennial basket case that is attractive. So ive asked the question, what do we as a club stand for? If i'm a 20 year old kid the answer to that is not about a club steeped in the tradition and culture of two once proud clubs standing together, because at 20, i couldn't give a flying you know what about Wests or Balmain and ive only ever known Wests Tigers and let me tell you, that tradition, history and culture doesn't look so good.
