Where do you rate Moltzen as a half back

DCE still needs to mature as a Halfback. He is definitely a talent and is a good thinker, but the majority of the things he did good last year came off the back of defensive errors by the opposition. Give him another year and I wouldn't be surprised to see him sore up that list, but not yet.

Sandow is a good Halfback… When this blokes get a good 5/8 outside of him, he could carve up this competition!

I understand people have a love affair with Moltzen as a Halfback, but I'll reserve further judgement until the season starts kicking along. I think he will go well there this year while Benji is on fire, but I really think he is gona be playing 5/8 for most of the year.

Personally I think it's too soon to rate Moltzen as a half. From what he has shown in trials, he is quick, his defence is ok, his passing game is good, his organisational game takes a backseat to Marshall and Farah, and he has no kicking game - Or at least one we have not seen yet. Having said that, I'm optimistic he will work out well in the halves but I think it will take a few games for him to feel comfortable there.

Pretty much the best way to answer the question. Its just too soon to judge.

The standard of 7's in the comp IS poor. It wasn't long ago we had Alan Langer, Andrew Johns and Ricky Stuart all in the same competition. I don't think Cronk laces any of their boots and he is by miles the best.

As for your point on DCE; Scott Prince is a premiership winning halfback too mate. He won it with our club. He was battling injuries last year too and was playing a side that was simply not performing. He'll come good this year with a better side around him and no injuries (touch wood), we'll return to this discussion later. I still rate him second best in the game, but I do doubt I will rate him that at the end of the season because at least one of Johnson and Cherry-Evans will follow up their fantastic rookie seasons with another stellar year and usurp him.

The standard of the 7s is poor because of the junior system. halfback in minis has to pass the ball and it stems up .Halfback used to be the little cocky kid with a bit of pace and lots of nouse who would get his chance at the tired forwards near the end of each half .The smaller kids retire around 15 because they get tired of getting smashed by the bigger boys. The interchange has changed the old number 7 .
real halfbacks are a thing of the past.
I class Moltz as a way better number 7 than Lui but mr Sheens seen otherwise,Moltz wasnt rated by Sheens yet now he believes 7 is his best position. If Moltz and Benj fire nobody will get near us .

The funniest thing is that according to Bug (and I have no reason not to believe him) Sheens told him last year that he wasn't NRL standard and comes out at the start of this year saying he should aim for Origin !
Personally I think he'll do well given half a chance - here's hoping for the Tigers sake anyway.

Hi guys - first post.

As for Moltzen - I reckon he could be anything. He has great speed, he is elusive and he has a good passing game.

The thing is that those skills do not make a halfback and time will tell how he goes. Still to me he is the best option.

Personally I am more concerned about Tedesco - I have no idea how good this kid is but he has been talked up a lot lately. He must have a lot of pressure on him.

So I suppose in two key positions we have two unknown quantities. Both might be awesome however both could fail and with them our chances would dive as well.

cktiger - how am I bagging him? I just said its too early to judge. Christ if that is bagging him I give up.

You are paying the price for bagging him constantly for 12 months

Hybrid - never said you in particular were bagging him in your last post- but let's get real.
Over the last year Moltzen has copped it on this forum (and not deservedly) relentlessly.
From being called heartless, a pretty boy (?), talentless and only being in the team because of Marshall- it never ends.
I don't have a problem with anyone discussing a players strengths and weaknesses (see my comments re lui) but in his case people seem to get personal and it irks me.
You're right - it is too early to judge him as a halfback.
Why don't we all sit back and wait a few weeks to see how he performs- and if it's no good then make the appropriate comments.

Perhaps you need read what I wrote and take that into account, ignoring my name.

Moltzen was deservedly criticised for most of last season. I admit some of the criticism on here went over the top but if you put me in that category then I suggest you are misguided and need to go back and revisit my comments. I never made it personal and only commented about his performances on the park.

And yes, it is way too early to judge him as a halfback, but this thread was about where you rate him now.

Until the finals series Moltzen was the worst fullback the club had seen, the most gunshy player on the field week in week out. He was bagged for this.

Come the finals series it was like a light switch had been flicked on. He played with aggression, flare and confidence. He was praised for this.

Lets hope the attitude of his finals performance is what we can expect this season. If his attitude is right he has the talent

Happy to be proven wrong but Moltzen is not a 1/2 backs rearend and I think the team will struggle with him there, as he does not take the line on. Teams will pick this up and he will put his runners under pressure and we will turn over a lot of the pill. Also his defence is no better than Lui was, I give 3 weeks and we will be screaming for a new 1/2 back but will sheens admit defeat here or will he stick to his guns, we will see. Again happy to be proven wrong but we will see.

Smeg once again the voice of reason. Agree 100 per cent.

Are you kidding ? Have you ever watched him tackle?
NOBODY is a worse defender than Lui- not Moltzen - not anybody!

If this is true I think you guys need to get out a bit more often. Moltzen in my and my friends opinions was one of the shining lights in our side last year.

Agree 200% for 3/4 of last season he was horribly frustrating to watch as he refused to put his body on the line and return the ball with any sort of venom. When the switch was flicked, it was a sight for sore eyes and I really did enjoy watching Moltzen play for the last 8 weeks or so of the competition. Thankfully he looks to have no such hesitation in his game this year so I'm confident he'll strike up a good combination with Benji and Robbie.

If he plays like he did in the last four weeks of the 2011 season, no one will have reason to make any such claims to his ability.

His only real flaw is consistency, hopefully he nails it this year.

As much as the focus is on Moltzen we should also be looking at how Miller is travelling as well - if he's as good as many claim he will be pressing for NRL selection so Moltzen will have to perform.

Personally I think Tim will go well in the number seven and have liked what I've seen in the trials.

My only real concern is his kicking game but we will see how he goes.

Miller impressed the hell out of me in the Foundation Cup trial.

He running game has moved forward in leaps and bounds this off season

Ihave never been a Moltzen fan but give the guy a break and lets see after six games how he is going and then rate him.I for one hope he makes me eat humble pie good luck tim
