CRONULLA and Melbourne have agreed on a historic NSW Cup joint venture.
>
Sport Confidential can reveal Melbourne will place their over-age lower graders with the Sharks feeder side in an unprecedented move that brings two rival NRL clubs together at the lower tier.
>
Desperate to cut costs after the salary cap blow-out, Melbourne decided to scrap their stand-alone NSW Cup team several months ago. The Storm flirted with Newtown and Brisbane Easts before settling with the Sharks, who are also under immense financial strain.
>
NSWRL boss Geoff Carr last night confirmed the clubs had agreed to merge, with only board approval from the league required to finalise the joint venture.
>
"Another big factor was the two head coaches - Craig Bellamy and Shane Flanagan," Carr said.
>
"They've worked together previously at Origin level, so there's a good relationship there."

Newtown, meanwhile, will remain as the Roosters' feeder club, **while Wests and Balmain will enter separate sides next year, despite a push from elements within Wests Tigers for them to join forces.**

Great news! Go the mighty Western Suburbs Magpies!

It's kind of weird that players from the Melbourne squad will play on the same team as members of the Cronulla squad.

Who are the imbeciles within Wests Tigers who want Wests and Balmain to merge at NSW Cup level???

I am very very very happy to read Balmain lives another season. The idea of having them merge hurts.

well the the concept of "merging" is something that clearly hasn't hindered you in the past…

There are still a few more cards to play out yet.

This was just a deadline for registration I believe

Here here Sirro. It may not necessarily be a good thing for Wests either.

With the problems Sydney teams have carving up the "not that big sponsorship money cake", surely people can see that the "old" divisions within the WESTS TIGERS(!!!!) have to go. I started following the Wests Magpies in 1948 and I have accepted the merger OR I WOULD NOT HAVE A TEAM TO FOLLOW. Just look at the results this year and next year will be better.
Stephen Humphreys has said any savings by amalgamating seperate teams will go to the grass roots. We have done better than most in bringing on young players and this must continue.

What savings? Wests Tigers aren't funding our NSW Cup teams. If there is a Wests Tigers NSW Cup team then they would be spending some money on that. This is going to turn into the old thread again.
