Who’s the GOAT

Still Andrew Johns, best footballer I've ever seen in 40 years of footy watching.

I remember there were many games won by Newcastle, consistently many, where Joey was the clear differenece between the teams. We'd sometimes lose to the Knights and you'd just shrug, not even totally upset, and say "well they've got Andrew Johns and we don't".

As good as others have been, nobody so consistently and individually dominant IMO.

Reflected I feel in how qucikly Joey was announced as an Immortal after his retirement.

I want to say Joey but we now know he was playing under the influence and I can't help but think it may have given him the advantage.

It would have to be Thurston or Cammy.

I'm kind of agreeing with brandy as well this year maybe one year to many for Thurston which will take a bit of the gloss off. I'm hoping cammy does the same and is made to look like a goose for a season or two.

See…. When this topic comes up it's difficult because the game encompasses many positions on field with varying roles and skills.

How do the best halves makes metres like the best front rowers... How do the best outside backs compete with the skills of the best halves?

While Thurston will go down as a great, his defense is woeful... He is terrible in this aspect of the game.

I always come back to Brett Kenny as the best I've seen, Wally is up there... I could go on and on

x2 regarding Thurston…
How can u be regarded GOAT when you can't ever beat a team in their town (the tigers)

He's one for the scrap book for sure tho.

Good topic of discussion tho.

I think Slater is the GOAT fullback.

He slices through a back line
like a Stradbroke Island shark
There's glue on all his fingers
he's The Emperor of Lang Park . . .

Cammy…unfortunately...

This. On longevity alone.

Based on todays game - i doubt he would have lasted as long if he was a hooker in the period from the 50's to the 70's

You can’t compare era’s.

Exactly my point. There are parts of his game where he doesn't even rate with hookers of the past but the game has changed so much its impossible to compare players against those from past eras. Whose to say players who left Sydney and captain/coached in the bush back in those days wouldn't have been able to play well in to their 30's in todays game so longevity is hardly relevant. You could definitely say he is the GOAT of the modern era based on longevity.

He would of copped some physical beatings by the likes of Noel Kelly etc that is for sure. They didn't take too kindly to koala's back in them days…......
