Why do Pentrith have salary cap problems?

The recent loss of Michael Gordon to the Sharks and the shopping around of Michael Jennings are usually accompanied by the explanation that the Panthers have salary cap problems related to back-ended contracts. How could this happen? The only A-list pay checks would be Lewis and Jennings. Even if they did have a few back-eneded deals, surely the departure of Petero, Waterhouse and Purtell should have covered that.

Previous admin went nuts and left problems. That big prop / solid player, nothing more…. is on 400 000\. Jennings $600 000.

Back loaded contracts = killers. Gus said they have a LOT of them due.

Same at Cronulla with Anthony Topou due $420 000 next year................................possibly the worst contract ever.

More and more CEOs are killing clubs by backloading deals and then leaving the mess for someone else to clean up in 3 years time.

Lachie Coote, Walsh, Gordon, Burns and Kingston would all be on good wickets as well.

The money Jennings is on is obscene.

At least he turns up every week. It's not the "stars" that surprise me. They will get good money anywhere. But Penrith is mainly a bunch of discards and squad-fillers. Surely they haven't paid anything ridiculous for Earl, Ciraldo, etc.

I thought Jennings was being shopped around because Gould doesn't want to pay him $600,000 / season for him to play reserve grade.

State your source….I think that is crap. Penrith are in trouble because they back ended the contracts of McKendry, Grant, Jennings and Luke Lewis. I doubt that they would pay Burns $450K a year but am happy to stand corrected.

I know he hasn't stated a source, but the way he pours money into the pokies at my local, he probably needs a pay packet that large.

Burns on 450 k :roll

Where are my footy boots

Penriths problem is they have a lot of players that 2-4 seasons ago looked like they were going to be guns

Tim Grant ,Jennings , Coote ,Nathan Smith,MacKendry etc etc and probably had to pay big bucks to retain or sign and have done diddly really since

Apparently when they signed Tahu last year the ex-ceo (Leary I think) thought they had cap space for him…. they didn't. So other players were asked to backload their contracts.

wow.. actually makes you grateful for the management at Wests. Although we're no stranger to salary cap issues ourselves, we were fined about 120k a few years back, but it happens to most clubs from time to time.

But 600k for Jennings? That's like Benji Marshall money! For another 200k, they could have Billy Slater! Lawrence is only on about 350k, and he's twice the player Jennings is. Rowdy actually has a starting spot in a team that isn't at the bottom of the ladder, and isn't enough of an asshole to get himself sin-binned in an Origin match for being a fist happy little thug
