Why has the Magpie Stayed

The club is named "Wests Tigers" I understand that Wests has come from Wests Magpies and Tigers has come from Balmain Tigers. Seeing there is no Magpie in the name why is it still on the jersey? Many people from the Balmain side of the merger on this forum have bagged the Magpies supporters in the past for asking why has the Magpie on the sleeve shrunk and why isn't it returned to the original size. Typical response was get over it, but how times change. Now that Balmain is a shot duck, is it time for them to get over it. You can't help how you react and feel for your club, but when we can understand one another, then then we can all honestly say we are truly WT supporters.

Just a quick question Milky, if WT make a permanent move to Campbelltown would you or the old Balmain fans support it?

oh no…..im happy for the magpie to say, I do however disagree with the comments that Balmain fans didn't give anything up and such talk.
In any compromised situation people are acutely aware of what they have given up, much less so what the other party has given up.
Talk of leichhardt being the spiritual home is no different to all the fibro silver tail stuff that was talked about in today's game, that is rightfully celebrating Wests history

I've always thought that in the beginning they should have

1\. Changed the Logo to a Black and White Tiger


2\. Drop the Orange
3\. Play in Black and White Jerseys
4\. Keep the Name Wests Tigers (Or Change it to Western Tigers)
5\. Drop the Magpie

Too late now but its what I would have preferred.

It's the Wests Tigers what's the colour of most Tigers?

Not saying WT should not have dominate orange but with that dominance of orange colour and tigers identity, the Western Suburbs Magpies is lost jn translation.

The Magpie was put in place when the agreement was signed in 1999 to ensure it is not lost and forgotten.

WT is not a renamed Balmain Tigers nor is a re-located Balmain Tigers its Wests Tigers, there needs to be some identity to support the Wests component.

Otherwise, its the Wests name that people often omit or is left out from media and print form. In 2014 we have commentators still calling WT Balmain.

Same goes for the White colour that is ignored in licensed merchandise - just plain ignorance.

Or the 'Black & Gold will never fold' catch cry.. James Tedesco staying at Leichhardt, LO - spiritual home of the Tigers etc etc All Balmain Tigers centric. Dozens of other examples.

Had this debate hundreds of times (cue acknowledgement from GNR4LFE) As i said in my previous post, its an issue to some because its less obvious then traces of Balmain Tigers.

If Balmain Tigers was in NRL today, what would be different from WT? Apart from playing four games at Campbelltown and the name Wests on the jersey - Nothing.

- there would be modernised jerseys
- there would be a modernised Tigers emblem
- they would still be called a Black and Gold team
- they would prob be playing half LO half ANZ
- they would still be called Tigers in every form of print, online, radio and TV

When it comes down to it.. All Balmain have really lost is the name Balmain where Western Suburbs Magpies have lost a lot more of their identity.

It's obvious why the Magpie is there. Recognition, the same reason why we play at LO and CSS. The same reason why our mascot is a Tiger. The same reason why we are Wests Tigers and not any other variation. It's just a bird on the shoulder, it's not intrusive, it doesn't cause confusion with branding. It's just a tip of the hat to one half of why this club called WT exists.

Come on people! Just when we should all be bathing in the warm glow of our recent winning ways, someone has to ignite the hoary old chestnut of Balmain and Wests Magpies. What a way to undermine the spirit of the mighty WESTS TIGERS. I was a magpie for nearly 50 years before we amalgamated and though I couldn't get to the game (I live in the Hunter Valley these days) it was the WESTS TIGERS who had me roaring at the TV; not the Balmain Tigers, not the Wests Magpies, but the WESTS TIGERS with a tiny magpie on the sleeve.

The magpie has been on our sleeve for 15 years now and it isn't right to use it as a means of undermining the WESTS TIGERS entity, as some on here are only too keen to do. I say get behind what we ARE because we will never return to the old Balmain and Magpies days, and even though I have some great memories, I never want to. Just remember this amalgamation gave us all a club, one club, so get on board or get overboard.

Because I was a Balmain fan I just call them tigers now, I know we are wests tigers, I am sure wests fan just say wests it's just the the passion of history in us

at leats the magpie shows that wests still exist. and it is a true 50/50 merger unlike the dragons, who 90% of the time wear there white with red V and are called St George or dragons most times

I can see both sides. It was agreed upon by both sides when the JV was formed, so why are there people who begrudge something so minor thats served to represent a side to the JV that some say gets overlooked. On the other hand i say big deal, move on. I really don't have a problem either way. What i dislike is that 99% of opinions on these issues are dictated by which side of the fence people come from and are clearly bias.
