The only times we have been successful (2004-2005, 2010-11) was when we went out and bought proven quality and big names.
04 - Hodgson, Prince, Whaturia, Payten
09-10 - Ellis, Tuqiri
We cant keep going to the recycle bun and hoping to buy gold.
However if were not in a position YET to buy 1-2 really good players im happy to not waste it by signing 5-6 recycled/reserve grade standard players.
1 or 2 quality players is all it takes to turn it right around.
To be fair, Hodgson, Prince, Whatuira & Payten were plucked out of other teams reserves.
The real development of the team came from the implementation of good youth players with them.
Now, isn't that where the Tigers are now? Grant, Taylor, Alioia, Chee Kam, Nauqama - plucked out of other teams reserves.
The difference, as I see it, is that Sheens had 2 experienced "spine" players mixed with 2 really good up & coming stars of their time- Hodgson, Marshall, Prince & Farah. Now, we have 3 up & comers & 1 guy that is in conflict with the HC. Tedesco is pretty much a bona fide star now. Farah is on a rapid decline, and doesn't play like he wants to be part of the solution. Brooks, in my opinion, has taken a few steps in the last month while Moses plays like a rookie.
The key is getting our spine to correctly control a football game. The rest of the squad is probably good enough. It's a genuine pity that Ballin is injured, as I believe he is the exact type of player required for Brooks & Moses.
You had me Chadman until "Brooks, in my opinion, has taken a few steps in the last month while Moses plays like a rookie".
I think it is the other way around. I also think they should be played the other way round i.e. Moses half and Brooks 5/8.
Apart from that I think you, Eddie, pHyR3 and TigerSJ are all pretty much on the money. Good constructive posts all of you.
