Wille Mason Thread

A Big Willie would've been fantastic to have IMO, but i think Little Willie will grow to be bigger and better this year anyway. His off-season international rep duties would have done plenty for his confidence. Expect BIG things from LITTLE Willie in 2010!! He will become one of the favourites for the girls out there.

I cannot believe everyone on here saying he is a 'loser', 'crap player', 'virus' among others. How many of you people have spent any time with Willie Mason or had a conversation with him to make this judgement. I would call most of the comments in this thread 'judging a book by its cover'. I love how everyone is an expert on players we should sign, probably why we are on here in the first place our judgements are not sound nor have we had any experience in selecting players. In essence we speak too much from EMOTION over logic and reseached evaluations.

I am not saying i would be desperate to sign Willie Mason, however i live by the motto that you give everyone a chance - who knows if we could have picked him up cheap, who is to say he couldn't prove to fit into our culture and may just be a good human being. Remember he would be the last player to join the group so the culture would have been set and he would have to gel with our club culture, not set it.

Who is it to say that it wasn't others at the Bulldogs who set the bad example and Willie followed? Remember that at the Roosters there were many Bulldogs at the club too and the Eastern Suburbs culture has always been the "party culture". Maybe our club would have been the right fit for him and brought out the best in him. We have an experienced coaching team unlike the Roosters that could have fostered his involvement and influence.

doesnt matter if we have spent time with him.. 99.9% of the fans wont and dont get to spend time with any players. the whole image is based on what we see in the news, papers, games and reputation… that is what counts. He is a VIRUS when you look at every aspect of the game.. Simple.. no iffs or buts

Willie aint no loser, How many of us are on 450K

My reasons for not wanting him are business / Financial only.

While percieved as a bad influence - I think roosters and Dogs had across the board culture issues

Spartan, being on 450k per annum does not make Willie a "winner". It makes his manager a smart business man who gets a cut of his earnings! It also shows the inflated and often crazy deals that go on in some Clubs in the name of publicity and "one upmanship". If he was such a "winner" and an excellent club man/ influence on his peers, why isn't his door being banged down with offers??
TREXX I agree with you totally - perception is reality in the word of professional sports, we only have to look at Matt Johns, Tiger Woods et al in the last 12 months.
Towntiger - yes many posts by most of us are written with emotion and passion, which is the foundation of our great Club. As members or even fans of our Club and of the game of Rugby League, we have every right to fight for the protection of a reputation that we as a Club have worked very hard to achieve and maintain. If this means having our say on players we do not want associated with the Wests Tigers brand, then so be it. Because the bottom line is, if we as Members and fans do not like what our Club becomes, then we walk away and take our hard earned cash with us - you only have to look at the Dogs a couple of years ago and Sharks last year to know this is true. The fact that we are very decerning about the people we include in our Club and their association with the history and traditon and good name of the Wests Tigers has only worked in our favour and essentially attracted a better "class" of person as a result. As Tiger Gran states, Willie, like Bird, like Gallen, like Carney, like Seymour etc etc are not Tigers material. Our men are made of sterner stuff than those blokes and that's why our Club has stood the test of time. As you say, perhaps it wasn't Willies fault and he was just a FOLLOWER? Well to me that makes him even more of a liability to us. We produce and take pride in being a Club of Leaders, and that is something Willie has failed to be on MANY occasions!
Apart from that Towntiger, this forum is an interesting place and you never know who gets on here and has a rant. Some of us do write with emotion, but we actually may just know a thing or two about who/ what we are talking about too! While writing about how we are all being judgemental and using poor judgement, make sure you practice what you preach maybe?

so everything we read in the papers and see on the news is 100% accurate, honest and reputable????? In relation to what you see in games, the guy had major knee surgery so understandably had a slow start to the 2009 season, however he did improve in the latter part of the year. In 2008 he was very strong until the knee injury in the semi finals (yes that is right he helped take a team to the semis - wouldn't that be good if we could there with his experience).

As i said in my post, i am in no way saying go out and sign him, only saying give a person a chance - if he was to come cheap i was saying it could be a good move. I am not saying we should spend big $$$$ to sign him in any case.

Tiger3- if you look at all of my posts, i am in almost if not every case speaking in a positive light. As my parents taught me, 'if you dont have anything positive to say dont say it at all'. I support this forum being a good vehicle for us fans to discuss matters around our club, however to see at times the constant bagging we give to people behind the veil of a computer screen is weak to say the least.

Gibbs went well last season so I have no doubt he'll be in for an even better season this year. Not sure on Fulton though. As for Mason, well he's not coming to the Tigers so this thread will remain closed unless there is double tuck backflip.

I'm not sure why the other thred has been locked, so i hope I'm not upsetting the mods, but i was implied by Peter Tunks and Brett Papworth on Talkin' Sport yesterday that Willie was offered to the Tigers for around 50-60K with the Roosters to pickup the rest of his contract. And supposedly anyone can have him for this price, yet nobody's interested.

I have to admit that price is tempting, but I'm glad we aren't interested. What goes around has come around for Big Willie.

I personally would take him in a second for that price. I think Willie still has alot of good footy in him if he can stay injury free, would be an explosive bench player and imo would complete our bench.
14.Taumata
15.Mason
16.Gibbs
17.Payton

As much as I hate to say it, on the right contract (ie get out clauses for bad behaviour), for $60,000 we would be mad not to throw him a lifeline.

You can never have too many props and while I'm no fan of his Sheens could probably straighten him out.

I think the relationship with Folkes would be a big barrier however.

Ahhh, I'd forgotten the Folkes factor. That would have a lot to do with it. It is a bargain for his work on the field, but I think its his offield antics that every club is wary of. Talk about the penthouse to the basement for Willie.

60K is only the first year, from then on WT would shoulder the full load.

Is it worth it and to risk losing young players….

I am Mixed about Lote and Willie
