Wests Tigers coach Tim Sheens revealed last night that he had considered the idea of unwanted Rooster Willie Mason joining the club. And Sheens said he had gone so far as to survey his staff about the prospect of the former rep star swapping red, white and blue for black, white and gold. ''We were approached by his management through a third party,'' Sheens said yesterday. ''It was a brief discussion. At this point, we couldn't do anything.'' Asked if that would change if Mason's asking price dipped, Sheens said: ''I doubt it. I don't think that's going to change. I don't think we'd get anywhere near it, unless Steve [Humphreys] found a goldmine somewhere, and I don't think that's going to happen.''
Tigers captain Robbie Farah was surprised to hear Mason had been linked with the club, saying: "It's the first I've heard of it. I don't know if we're going after him or not. I haven't actually spoken to the club about it. I might have to ask Tim at training tomorrow.'' Any move to the Tigers might be scuppered by Mason's poor relationship with Steve Folkes, who is an assistant at the club. Mason cited Folkes as the main reason he walked out on the Bulldogs mid-contract before the two had an ugly public falling out. "'Folksey' and Willie? Yeah, that's another thing I didn't think of,'' Farah said. ''I'm not sure if they'd want to work together again. But I guess they'll sort that out if it happens. I guess Willie just wants an opportunity to play somewhere. Folksey's got us into great shape and we're as fit as we've ever been. He's been great." Nonetheless, Farah said he would welcome Mason to Concord Oval should a deal actually take place. "Willie's a big figure in the game, and when he's at his best, he's almost unstoppable," Farah said.
The Herald revealed last month that Mason had all but agreed to terms with the Melbourne Storm but the board then vetoed the move by coach Craig Bellamy. It is understood a deal south of the border is still being fought for by Bellamy and Mason, who have a strong relationship dating from Mason's days playing Origin for NSW.
