Willie mason ???

Honestly some of you experts need to watch the replays of our run into the semis last year. Gibbs line speed will be missed this year. He is extremely under rated and a massive hole in our defensive structure. Sheens had to sacrifice one big name and it was Gibbs probably due to his knee issues and age. Someone will have to step up this year to cover his loss. Hopefully it's Blair otherwise the fonz is going to look real dumb.

Hang on a minute..we supposedly couldnt afford to keep Gibbs who is in his prime & a proven & highly valued first grader, but we can afford to buy BOTH Mathew Bell AND Willie Mason,a couple of 30-somethings who havent shone for years(if ever in the case of Bell).
I simply dont get it,other than Sheens must have had enough of Gibbs antics(but is prepared to take a much bigger potential risk on Masons antics)
:wtf ??

U could buy a house with the leftover money from Gibbs' deal to that Bell and Mason are on.

It's a numbers game. If u think Gibbs deserved what he was on, given the strain on today's salary cap and the club already having players such as Marshall, Carah, Ellis, Lawrence etc, u got rocks in your head

Dont think so.
All of us are purely speculating of course,so I will as well…Bell was a regular first choice 17 player at Penrith ,& that puts him in the $80-$100k range absolute minimum. He was probably told he has no future there,so we may have got him for a little less than that
Mason was ONCE a $400k player only a couple of years ago,but the laws of supply & demand..well,there aint much of the latter.its only a guess, but $150-$180k wld top him out these days in the NRL.Remember he played rah rah for the Barbarians just last season(how i have no idea!)
Gibbs is a solid first grader,a notch up from Bell no doubt, but thats it..sometimes he was a run on player, sometimes like Bell a reserve...Im thinking maybe $200-$220k tops was what we were paying him.
Add 'em all up,& its pretty much an even trade..I know who Id rather have.

So you think Bell would be on about X, you reckon we'd have to pay Mason about Y, and you can't see how Gibbs was getting more than Z. And on that basis you're deciding who you'd rather have in the squad. Can I have your phone number? I've got some magic beans I want to sell. :unamused:

Dont know what part of the word "speculate "is unclear, but I'll make it easier for you..my numbers are just an educated guess, not disimiiar to yours as a matter of fact. And not completely out of the ball park.
So you can keep your beans (& their obvious effects),& read Ed Reschs post which is exactly my point..Gibbs will be sorely missed,& hiring 2 nevilles on same sort of $$ somehow doesnt work for our roster of young blokes coming thru

Don't forget, Lui stood to earn about $200k this year and he is gone, so there's some cash right there for a 1 year deal.

With lui gone and 75% of dwyers salary exempt from the cap we have room to move. Tedesco has taken up a piece of that but we still have some spare for 1 or maybe 2 more signings…

Are you suggesting there will be more signings smoking gun?

I would of thought Moltzen being back would of negated Lui's money ??

Moltzen had a contract for 2012 anyway Happy. I would assume whatever he is being paid for 2012 would have been taken into consideration as part of the Tigers cap space.

Fair enough Willow and Gun It was always hard to know whether the club salary cap wise had written Moltzen off or not

clontarf, Gibbs line speed will be sorely missed. i agree with you 100% on that.

i think you are all selling Matt Bell short tho. the work he does in and around the ruck is exactly what gibbs does for the tigers. he won't offer much with the ball in hand (neither did bryce), but he will do ALOT of cleanup work in his 30-40 mins on the park

i watched matt bell a bit after i knew the tigers had signed him and think he is awesome. i couldnt believe the panthers were letting him go! very much looking forward to seeing him this year.

on the mason front, i have only read the last page of this epic thread, but i hope to god he doesnt come to the tigers. we already have a great squad for this year and i cant see anything he would add other than nuisance value…by which i mean he would be a nuisance at the tigers!

could be a cheap pick up , backup for any injuries ( touch wood none) the big guys up front do a lot of work and he could cover a player that needs an extra week off to be 100 percent

Apparently he has been spotted up in Newcastle having a meeting with a couple of guys in suits.

lawyers for the defendent?
May have undersold Bell a little as u tend to notice competitors more with ball in hand(& Bell was very one dimensional with little impact) ,& miss the work they do in defence.I hope thats Bell,& I wish him well.
I played golf today with a couple of WT supporters,& one said Gibbs was arguably the dumbest player we ever had until a few years ago(ie gave away penalties on the 5th tackle, dropped the ball on early tackle) but now we'd got most of that stuff out of his game we move him on.That was my sentiment too.

He is from Newcastle, well my home town of Toronto actually. So it could be anyone in suits that he deals with back there. e.g. His financial advisers, mates etc.

Although, Bennett did say he wants to get the Novocastrians back to the Knights. It's certainly possible that he is talking to them.

i have heard from a mate that he has signed with the knights and it will be announced within the next two weeks. they are keen for him to play a trial so i guess we'll have to wait and see.

wherever he does sign if he does you'd have to think the club would want him to do so before the trials finish to at least give him a game. i know we did it with lote but i think with someone like mason who hasn't played for a while a hitout will be required

Does anyone have any news about willie mason today??

No, no announcement from Newcastle yet !
But I did hear he was allowed to write using a colored pencil today, I think they are close to letting him use a pen.

Joe I posted earlier it will be resolved in the next fortnight that was about 5 days ago. In that same post I said it was down to us and the panthers from what I understand penrith have offered around 10-20k more and like I said it's either money or premiership that will ultimately decided where he plays.

Black&White had me convinced he was on his way to Newcastle
Then Smoking gun said it could be us 😢
Bazzinator now says it is Newcastle again
Please be Newcastle please be Newcastle please be Newcastle.

If Mason signs for the Tigers- great! He has the impact ability few forwards in the NRL offer. It would make for the Tigers having one of, if not THE most dynamic football teams on the field in 2012.

That said- Mason is not a necessary player for the Tigers. He's a luxury. So if they don't sign him, no big deal. They are well stocked for a run at the title without him.

As for him being a distraction- I'll trust the coaches on this. I'm sure if they thought it would be a problem, they'd have closed the book a while ago.

Geez, the Tigers will have a pretty imposing forward pack next season, with or without Mason on board.
