Wing Options

The Talau-Kepaoa side of the field lacks pace. You could deal with Kepaoa if he could catch a pass, but he doesn't seem to be able to manage that.

Gebi is the solution for me.

I thought that was his best game, really did some dirty runs and big tackles when we needed them....still needs some polish but I think I can see what Madge sees!!!

He didn't play too badly (apart from dropping the sitter and choosing to kick for himself rather than infield), but for me he's not a good enough athlete to play on the wing.

Until we buy someone, I'd have:

Mbye centre and push Talau to the wing. Bringing Simpkin onto the Bench.

Mbye is great defensively especially with communication.

try telling reece hoffman that after mbye left him out to dry with gagai and roberts scoring 3 on that side last year

You maybe right, it could also be one game last year with a rookie winger that isn't up to scratch. Overall last season he was a good defensive centre.

worth rewatching the game if you dont believe me. No communication at all and reece was left on his own multiple times

I think we've all seen that Kepaoa is not up to first grade. We all have eyes so I'm not even going to bother explaining why.

The question is who do we have to come in and replace him?

Talau? Then we're short a centre.

Kei? Didn't play on the weekend, unproven on the wing.

Hoffman? I don't think he's a winger, and doesn't look ready in the centres either.

Cini? Thought he was impressive on the weekend at fullback, and did alright in the trials on the wing.

We have been linked to Naden and Corey Oates in the last week, so it's obvious the club is looking. Personally, I think Oates would be a good option, he has errors in him too, but he can do some really good things as well. Not a huge fan of Naden.

I just feel as though Oates is shot physically, Naden offers far more upside, but from all report he is fairly average defensively also. Keen to give Gebbie a go, but he might need at least a game or two in reserves first.
Fitzgibbon keeps appearing on the score sheet in reserves, does anyone know how the rest of his game is going?
I think it's also worth noting that the POM said Kepaoa is carrying a knee injury, and yesterday was only his 8th FG game, so I'm not ready to write him off yet, but he has a few big gaps in his game that need filling.

I know it may get confusing when we are talking about flippers, but last time i checked your knee is nowhere near your hands.

His carries back are the best part of his game, but he is fundamentally missing every other part of a wingers games.

I mean he's completely stuffed up two breaks in two weeks. Literally any option other then kicking it dead was better. We could of been 12-0 up and really changed the momentum in that game.

Not writing the kid off but he needs to learn in reggies, and based on how his body has changed i dont think he is long for the wing. He's too big.

In regards to a winger been poor defensively, unless he is missing tackles they just react to what the inside does for the most part and jam when the overlap is on.

Never said he didn't have hands like a digital watch, what I meant was he's not playing to his full capacity, if he were it might make his inexcusable drop balls and strange decision making a bit more palatable.

Signing Naden is a much better decision. A player yet to peak, struggling to crack it in a solid side. Much more upside for a lot less coin. Signings like that make competitive teams into premiership teams.

Isn't Naden a centre though?

Played both last year in the Panthers team. And pretty good at both. If we want an elite player in the role we should be looking at Gagai. Otherwise Naden will do fine and as I mentioned there is plenty of upside.

Kepaoa had some nice moments most especially when he caught the Knights' defence out with the sharp step and for a moment looked like scoring. He has some work to do but I view him as a long term centre. The knee seems to be holldng him back.

My concern with Naden is that we keep buying every troubled player in the NRL.
Roberts, Leilua...now Naden?
Maybe Madge thinks he can give them the discipline to turn it around.

This is precisely what we got in AJ, A young player from a good system that isn't on much coin and yet to peak.

Had a couple of bad patches yesterday in attack but quite solid in defence.

He certainly needs to improve in 2021, I haven't given up on him yet

I understand what your saying. But I wouldn’t be signing Naden to replace AJ. I think there is a place for both in the side. Talau as well.

AJ had a good game, apart from the dropped ball - reacted poorly. Tackled well plenty of dirty hit ups and under the high ball was safe.

Couple of handling errors and I wish he passed that ball back on the inside when he made that good break down the Left hand Side.

In general good value young first grader

I feel like he could have either passed to brooks earlier - or just taken the tackle. 100% kicking license revoked if he's selected again

Oates past his prime for mine

Kiah cooper looked pretty handy on the weekend, not sure what his natural position is though

gebbie would be great but needs a couple of reggies games in him

mbye to centre and talau to wing probably easiest shift for now while we wait for some of the dev players

also edenn rogers smith could work out as a centre, if talau went to wing

Nowhere near past his prime, just badly needs a change of scene. I would pick Oates up in a heartbeat.

I don’t like the idea of Talau on the wing either, he’s a centre through and through and yesterday showed just how much of a better option he is than BJ.

Talau & Jet in the centres, Oates & Nofo on the wings would be a great backline, imo. Maybe move Jet to partner Oates as they have played together previously in the good Brisbane sides.

I sense the impatience on a lot of the peeps here... he's a kid and hopefully is learning from this experience... I don't know the answer but to give him more time on the field... how many games? again I don't know but he does have a lot of upside.

Naden isn’t a winger he is a center.

Oates would take in an instant.

AJ if he can cut the errors out would be very good for us. He is clearly struggling with the speed of the game and needs to increase his urgency & focus.

Outside of AJ we are in all sorts as our options are nothing. Talau isn’t a winger we have seen that before no point going back.

I think my heart will fail if I have to watch him on the wing dropping balls for the next 142 games.

I’m so confused by this guy. He actually looks the goods. Run hards, has a great step and has some pace. Just can’t catch the ball if his life depended on it. If we lose that game we would all be talking about how he cost us the game with that dropped ball with 5 to go.
