Winger Position for 2017

It would be nice to think the club has someone in mind from outside the club to fill the void and preferable kicks goals.

I think what we have on our books just are not good enough to fill such a vital position. Okay Watto might be on the money move Simona to the wing and leave Kev in the centre, but I would love to see a tall specialist winger who was strong under the high ball and could kick. Failing that I would go with Watto

Go with Watto on the wing SC

Huge call that mate

Closer to the AED panel!

I wonder how much difference goal kicking makes. I'm just thinking aloud here, no conclusions.

Moses kicks 64% for his career, which is about as bad as you can get for a regular kicker. 80% might be the benchmark, but it's a high one - very few players have ever kicked 80% for a single season. So let's say 75% is a more realistic expectation.

What this means is that Moses is missing one goal in 10 that a first-rate kicker would get. Let's say a decent team is getting five shots a game (the Tigers averaged almost exactly 20 points a game in 2016), at which point having a Moses-level kicker is costing exactly one kick every two games relative to the 75% kicker - or one point a game.

I'm not sure what all this means, except to say that even if Rankin was a 75% kicker and Moses can't improve on 64% it's certainly not cut and dried that it's worth running out a dud winger just to improve the goal kicking to the tune of a success every other week.

Pretty sure it would have meant a finals berth this year, instead of being disappointed. It was painful watching Moses missing a few shots whilst the game slipped away, particularly as he kept on making the same error..

I think Rankin would have landed at least one of those shots late in the game against the Titans. I was in line with Moses when he took the penalty shot that would have put us in front, and the way the ball hooked to the right was painful to watch. He never looked like kicking it when he was lining it up. Rankin isn't a great goal kicker by any means, but he is significantly better than Moses. And that's why i think he'll be on the wing come round 1\. Unless Moses improves.

If the 1 in 10 were against the Titans and Storm in 2016 ….....

A fast winger with good hands and defence will help the team to score more tries than an average winger would and therefore give Moses more chances to kick goals, improve his %, and improve the chances of his team winning a game.

I believe that an NRL time cannot make the 8 without a good goal kicker. Wests Tigers desperately need a good goal kicker of first grade playing ability. I can't believe that the club can't find one. I don't think that it would have to pay more than $200,000 a season to find one.

Wondering if the Bradford Bulls have any players worth signing ??

They have go into receivership this morning

Another Keith Lulia…??

James "Jamie" Foster (born 27 July 1990)[2] is a professional Rugby League player who has been playing for Bradford Bulls in the Super League. His position of preference is in the centre, but he has been known to convert to the wings and fullback. Foster is also a recognised goalkicker. He signed signed for Super League side Bradford Bulls on a 1 Year Deal. In 2011 Jamie scored 14 tries and 77 goals, a total of 210 points, in 13 appearances and 3 from the bench.

Royce Simmons, his Saint Helens coach, has said "Jamie Foster's ability to kick points is vital to the Saints. The way Foster can turn four points into six, he can break the heart of another side through that." Jamie was the fourth top try scorer in Super League with 12 tries, and is the fifth top goal scorer with 58 successful kicks.

Wasn't it blowing a gale that match v the Titans ??

Kev is to good to leave out of the side
And with how he performed against Penrith, which imo cost us the game, was enough to drop us out of the finals. Not Moses goal kicking against the storm and Titans.

I would rather a good singer who scores you lots of tries rather than a rubbish winger that bombs tries but kicks goals.
I think the best winger is Kev, but I wouldn't minds seeing Heleta Hunt or C Taylor
It is a mixture of fielding your best team and giving first-grade talent to quality youngsters

Slim pickings there 😱pen_mouth:

Apart from Leon Pryce , nothing much doing

There was talk of Denny Solomona earlier this year. He appears to be on the verge of signing with a Union club. He notched up 40 tries in 27 games with 50 line breaks and 84 tackle breaks. Even allowing for the fact that it was in ESL that is a pretty amazing record.

Don't like our chances after reading article reporting Castleford have knocked back offers of £300,000 for his release. Looks good in tigers colours though

1 point a game would have gotten us in the 8….

Not sure if we have the $$ to buy a goal kicking winger so we're prob stuck with what we have. I'd love for Kev & Nofo to get their act together in defence then put Jamal at left centre with Simona on the wing.

Failing that, Idris on the right with Nofo, Simona & Heleta on the left.

Either option still leaves the issue of goal kicking. Also wouldn't mind seeing Sue & ET at 2nd row to sure up the defence + Aloiai to lock.
