Woods next Blues Captain...

AARON Woods has emerged as a leading contender to be the next long-term NSW State of Origin captain.

The question of Paul Gallen’s successor will loom large over the 2016 Origin series, with his dominating presence to leave a large void when he exits following his sixth series at the Blues’ helm. Robbie Farah has captained the Blues in Gallen’s absence due to injury in that time.

But Farah is 33 next year and could join a host of other stars to call quits on representative football at the end of 2017, leaving him as just a possible short-term fix as Blues captain.

Blues insiders have been impressed by 25-year-old Woods’ leadership within the NSW team.

The bearded prop has also impressed in his leadership role at Wests Tigers since taking over the captaincy from Farah at the NRL club this year.

He has cemented his place in the NSW team over the past three years and is now in prime position to become a long-term leader of the state.

Greg Bird, 31, missed last year’s series due to suspension but has been a mainstay of the Blues line-up for several years.

He has played 15 matches since 2007.

Bird has previously captained Gold Coast and could be another option as a short-term skipper, given he is nearing the end of his career.

“Hopefully if I am still around next year, I will still have a leadership role like I do now,” Bird said.

“But I am not focused on the captaincy at the moment.

“After missing last year I am only focused on putting in a good performance, getting my teammates to do the same and hopefully winning the series this year.”

There is no doubt he has cemented his spot in the Blues side but as Captain ? i don't see him as one even at Club level…..yeah sure he leads up front with the metres and runs per game but as Captain he needs to get angry behind the posts when Tries are scored against us and tell the side in no uncertain term when we are playing with no pride.
James Graham shows his filth when his team is under performing , i'm yet to see that from Woods.

Just my Opinion.

Many good captains stay cool and relaxed in all situations and dont get all fired up.

Think Langer, K Walters, Buderus, Smith, Steve Price.

There are many ways to skin a cat, the fiery style of James Graham inspires people, the calm relaxed method of the above (which Woods is more like) tells the team we've got this, regardless of the situation.

Personally Ive always done better under that more assured calm approach than the fire and brimstone style.

This may seem a bit selfish, but I'd rather he was captain of wests-tigers during the Origin period.
Origin whilst its a great spectacle, can de-rail a team's season.
No team benefits from having players in the squad.
For instance: How would it be of any benefit to wests-tigers, if Woodsie gets injured in a Origin match, and is out for some time. It isn't

I agree on all points, I don't think he is the best choice as captain for us, let alone the blues.

Smith doesn't have the time in a game to blow up at his team
Between playing , as well as refereeing, and smiling at the linesmen, how could he have time to give his team a serve. :master:

I think as a captain he'd be okay. The problem is I don't think he is a great player. He gets good metres and does have some skill but he basically never wins us a game based on his efforts.

I was Captain for many years from Under 14's through to C Grade and let me tell you when the Forwards weren't leading with me up front they would know about it…...no insults are needed , just controlled aggression and them knowing what is acceptable and what isn't .
Don't you worry i used to be told in no uncertain terms when making the wrong decision when we got a Penalty.

Personalities are worked out over time anyway and you realize how each player needs to be approached , nothing used to frustrate me more when every now and then when one of our players got knocked out for a high shot we would always lift a couple of gears.

Smith manipulates all the Refs and is tolerated for some reason . Many times he should be given 10 Minutes in the sin bin but never occurs .

He oversteps the mark on many occasions but as long as he is allowed to get away with it ? his going to continue it .

The captain needs to be someone who will be guaranteed a spot in the team each year.
How many players do NSW have like that? And how many of those players will still be playing in a few years time?
We have very few, and of those that we do have how many are leaders at club level?

Woods is the only one that fits the bill.

It's interesting that he's considered for NSW captaincy and Sterlo praised his leadership before a recent game, but not rated here. Maybe we don't know as much as we think. (For the record, he hasn't impressed me much so far.)

i thought hes actually been pretty good this year - toned down the larikinism a fair bit especially in pressers and on the field

leads by example and i think he's working harder for the tigers this year than any other (with limited games). he really works harder in getting quick play the balls now and fighting for extra yardage

very happy with him captaining the club for many years and hopefuly origin too

Don't go all AFL on us.

Nah, would not do that.
I just like wests tigers to be able to field their strongest team each week, giving them every possible advantage to make the top 8\. 😛ray:
Origin period detracts from this. :unamused:

I consider the Woods type for captain only when there are no other alternatives - meaning a shallow pool of intelligent and consistent players

im getting more used to woodsy being captain. he leads from the front first and foremost.

secondly, he may come across as a clown at times, watching him speak in interviews and his demeanor during the game has impressed me heaps. he doesn't mind calling it as it is, and he'd have everyone's respect.

not sure about how he'd deal with referees but if cameron smith is in the opposite team, be prepared to get the rough end of the stick no matter who you are.
