World's best beer

Can anyone explain the purpose of the ball in the can?
A small ping pong ball. Does it effect the level of froth Maybe?
From Dr Google:

"The Guinness widget is a tiny, plastic ball inside beer cans. During canning, pressurized nitrogen is added to the brew, which trickles into a hole in the widget. Once opened, the widget's nitrogenated beer squirts into the rest of the beer giving it a velvety texture."

Amazing, thank you for that TO. I don’t drink Guinness, just bought the can for a recipe. It did have plenty of creamy froth.
