I doubt it will be the tigers, but someone needs to move out of sydney. I think it should be the sharks honestly.

Can someone confirm, that 30 40 years ago the roosters considered moving to liverpool? My grandfather thinks was the case.

Newtown to Orana park

I was really young when this all happened, am i correct in saying this was offered to newtown, and they knocked it back, only for wests to move there later on, i vaguely remember the wests move and my grand dad talking about newtown should of done it.
Can some one fill me in on what happened there

As I recall the issue was more that the move relied on Newtown selling their leagues club which they couldn't do quickly enough. They did actually play home games out there in 1983 and I believe some junior rep teams played under the Newtown-Campbelltown banner (or vice versa) but the money ran out and the Magpies were able to do so instead.

Yeah the jets played there….and when they bombed then wests moved in.

In my lifetime wests have continually had to jump sinking ships from pratten to lidcombe to cambo and then merge with us.

Quite sad really but they have done well to survive.

They had to move to Lidcombe because Sunday play was not allowed on Pratten Park (religious reasons).

What's the deal there Gary? Some sort of overly religious council forbid it or did some church own the land?

The ground is owned by Ashfield Council. My understanding is that the council, no doubt dominated by a religious influence, would not allow Sunday play which at the time, was becoming more regular in the NSWRL. Happy for someone to correct me if wrong.

Yeah, soon to be extinct Balmain were blessed to be saved by the generous financial juggernaut Magpies in 1999.

Yeah,Western Suburbs was the Club that were going to be dropped,Balmain thinking at the time was they would be next with the criteria that was being applied to Clubs in an effort to reduce the number of Sydney based Teams. After talks with the Roosters(1 meeting i think),Parra. & Gosford Leagues & Gosford RSL they felt Wests would be the best option for long term survival in the NRL for both Clubs. The majority view was any sort of alliance with Parra. would be a takeover by them and Balmain would have little say in what was done, the Roosters, depending on who you listen to, laughed at the proposal of a JV as the Sydney City Tigers.
Newtown were going to play out West. as the "New Campbelltown Jets" but due to mainly financial reasons they just weren't able to get the new venture up & running, their main backer John Singleton seemed to loose interest for one reason or another and the club folded.I know there are other reasons why they run into trouble so i am happy to be corrected by any "Bluebags" that are out there.

The magpies (collingwood AFL variety) is the most popular and followed football brand in Australia.

They're not even the most followed and popular football brand in the AFL - that honour would easily be beaten by the Swans (not in paid up members though)
Think the Broncos most probably have more followers too.
Undoubtably the two biggest football 'brands' in Australia are the Queensland and NSW Origin teams.

Wait what?

Not the most followed team but are leading the membership ladder in the afl by a good 15k at 75k plus members.

Wait what?

You don't base popularity on paid memberships? Lol.

I won't bother going into crowd figures cause you seem to go with gut feel over facts. Needless to say, collingwood draw a decent amount each week.

Really????

Are we really going to turn yet another thread into a back and forth about two clubs who no longer hold and NRL relevance? (Discounting they both make up our combined history)

there is a entire sub section where you can debate the issue, no need to turn every discussion down that path

Well said Smeg, I reckon that you would be a ideal board member.

I have a recollection of easts looking to move to campbo at the same time wests were. vague recollection mind you.

Easts played a handful of games at Campbelltown, but I think this was during the transition of the Sydney Sports Ground to the SFS. They also played at Henson during this period which was free after Newtown left the NSWRL.

I think it was more a convenient marketing exercise rather than a permenant strategic relocation.

I don't believe the Rooster played any premiership games at Cambo. They used Henson Park with the odd game at the SCG whilst the SFS was built. Newtown only played their last comp game against Canberra in 1983 atCampbelltown I am pretty sure.

We all love the club, no doubt, but if our current financial position was a lot worse than officials let on, would you support an immediate move to WA to fix our problem, or a $5 million dollar carrot to move for 2 seasons to WA, as supporters do you think this would get a green light from the fans?
I personally would accept any proposal that meant the club would be stronger, I couldn't stand the thought of our club going down the drain. Just my thought, looking forward to yours.

I don't think I could follow a team called the Perth or Western TIGERS.
Yeah "_Go Perth_" a real war cry for someone in Sydney

Yeah, I currently follow the tigers from France, so Perth is no big deal. I wouldn't vote for it, though, as smeg says, we've been sufficiently stuffed around already.

On the history lesson, the bulldogs wanted to 'merge' with the magpies and build a super sport facility somewhere around Liverpool I think, incorporating campbelltown and its wealth of juniors. This fell apart with the dogs salary cap disaster, which, by there way, one Braith Anasta was up to his private parts in. And now, he's one of us! Isn't life strange?

Superdome.

Balmain had informal proposed merges with Easts & Souths (Sydney City Stallions) along with Easts Brisbane, Gold Coast (East Coast Tigers) back in the early 90's along with a push to move to Gosford.

Wests never had any merge proposals until 99 but there was a ongoing push (and much board infighting between ashfield and campbbelltown) to rename Wests Magpies to Marcarthur Magpies or Campbelltown City Magpies which never eventuated.
