Would you take Todd Carney at the Tigers?

FROM player of the year and Australian five-eighth to being released by the Roosters less than 12 months later - that's the tale of Todd Carney.

Carney will be set free by the Roosters this week and it's my understanding he is comfortable with the decision. Those who know Carney say he has got his head around the idea of going to play rugby league in France for Super League club Catalans. However, his ambition is to stay in the NRL and he is hoping that a rival team will throw him a lifeline. Carney recently said he wanted to be a long-term Roosters player, so naturally he is shattered by the club's decision to terminate his contract.

However, as I revealed in this column recently, coach Brian Smith didn't want him in his team any more after his well-documented off-field dramas. Roosters chairman Nick Politis had been equivocating about whether to keep the former Canberra Raiders star at the Bondi Junction club, but in the end it was the influence of Smith and some senior players that made Carney's position unworkable.

After playing a starring role in the Roosters' stunning charge to last year's grand final, Carney won the Dally M player of the year award and was also rewarded with selection in Australia's Four Nations squad. This year the Roosters have been among the NRL's biggest underachievers.

I wonder if he would accept a minimum wage NRL contract for 1 year.
No I can't be changing my mind about signing him.

The Sydney Roosters and Todd Carney's management have both denied a decision has already been made to tear up the troubled NRL star's contract.

A report on Sunday said Carney would be cut loose from the NRL club this week after a year marred by a return to alcohol-related problems.

The Dally M medallist, who appeared to have beaten his demons when he led the Roosters to the 2010 grand final in his first season with the club, has been linked to a move to French Super League club Catalans.

"As we said a couple of weeks ago, the decision will be made at the end of the season and we're playing today (Sunday) so it's certainly not the end of the season," Roosters chief executive Steve Noyce told AAP.

Noyce said a decision would be made in the "next short period of time".

"I've been saying all along with this thing, we need to focus on the team that's playing and then once the season's finished we'll address the matter with Todd and his manager."

Carney's management company Titan posted a denial on Twitter.

"Contrary to reports in The Sun Herald, Todd Carney has not been sacked by the Sydney Roosters," it read.

"Management working on a resolution this week."

It is widely believed the 25-year-old has played his last game for the Roosters.

He has been stood down three times by the club this season for alcohol related issues.

The Roosters downed depleted minor premiers Melbourne 40-8 on Sunday to finish their season with a fourth straight win, but won't feature in the finals beginning next weekend.

Asked about Carney after the match, coach Brian Smith said: "I don't think there's an answer to that at this point.

"As far as I understand Toddy and his manager will be back to chat with the club, Steve Noyce in particular.

"I hope I find out just before you do."

Would fit in well at the Bulldogs. His lifestyle would fit the clubs culture perfectly. They always seem to have money to spare under the cap too.

I would like to see him at the rabbits, they need a new play maker to replace Sandow and he is too much a talent to send him packing to the ESL and of course the penny my drop and he may turn things around

Did you hear the report that he was seen heavily intoxicated late last night after the Roosters last game for the season? This was reported on 2GB.

That's news to me….if True you gotta feel sorry for the guy(even though he's a tool)...he needs to get out of the NRL....go to AA to sort himself out then get a real job....!

Ahh come on, who cares! He's not being considered for the playing squad and it was the last game for the season. If you can't have a drink then when can you?

He needs a senior mentor / father figure thats well grounded and a better support structure and to get away from the eastern suburbs drinking culture at the roosters.

He is a bum in my books and a drunken one at that he just cant control his booze.
Pitty the club that does take him on.

Thats my personal thought on the matter and I,stick to it.

Regards.

When a player needs to be stood down 3 times in a season for the same issue there are serious problems that no one in their right minds would go near without a twenty foot pole with a sharp hook on the end
Talent or no talent

Chookie have you ever heard the Biblical quotation "Those without sin cast the first stone"? I think your comments are more like you are throwing boulders!

It is a shame, because Todd Carney seemingly has an issue with Alcohol, and if only he can find a way to deal with it he is probably a terrific young bloke who just happens to be one hell of a good footy player and the Dally M Player of 2010!
The news headlines of past & present League players who have had incidents with alcohol played out in the media would make a great team if put together and these are some that I can recall:
Carney, Brent Stewart, Anthony Watmough, Anthony Watts, Robert Lui, Brett Seymour, Greg Bird, Nate Myles, Dane Tilse, Jonathon Thurston, Darren Lockyer, Anthony Laffranchi, Bryce Gibbs, Julian O'Neill, Willie Mason, Frank Paul Nuuausala, Jake Friend, Michael Jennings, Daine Laurie, Frank Pritchard and the list goes on.

Whilst he is a repeat offender I have no doubt that it is more than possible to overcome his drinking problems and to call him a bum is a tat unfair and I just hope that you find support to deal with any problems you may face in the future?
Best of luck Ned

To suggest he has a serious drinking problem i feel is a tad over the top, someone with a drinking problem goes to the pub everyday after work and blows all his cash on getting smashed. Carney on the otherhand has been out on the drink a few nights all year and suddenly he has a drinking problem? I think not. Actually to tell someone in there mid twenties to not go out at all is stupid, even the law students over at Sydney Uni go out every weekend on the drink and that is not considered to be anything abnormal, Todd Carney does not have a drinking problem he is just a normal 20-something year old who has had far to harsh restrictions placed upon him.

He doesnt have a drinking problem, he is just no good at it when he goes out. He is a half a dozen pot screamer…literally.

...and he isnt a decent bloke Ned...he is the epitome of a w@nker. It has been bread into him from a long line of them.

I would take him, but on the condition of 0 tolerance and if he re offended his contract would be null in void.. I think a club that could word his contract to hit him in the hip pocket, might just be smart enough to get him to settle and play the football we know he can.
