WTF – Wests Tigers Faithful Podcast

Sorry we're late!

We continue our deep dive into the season, where we review the "current" outside backs in our squad and look at what's to come.

We also talk the development list, John Bateman (hopefully) to Manly and the bowel troubles of one Charlie Staines.

Yes. Since 2014 we've signed on 123 players. At what point do we look beyond the players for winning solutions?
What does that even mean ? We’ve literally replaced every element of the club in the last 5 years . Multiple times over in some cases like the coaching staff .
It’s just Hyperbole !
The issue is every player wants to play for
-the roosters for post career/ investment opportunities ;
- the storm to basically play for the nrl patriots/ all blacks ;
- the panthers , to hopefully get that premiership rub from the boys out west ;
- the broncos , to get the run of Brisbane- lifestyle .
All the other clubs are basically feeding off the scraps of those 4 , unless you’re like the cowboys or Penrith before them, and develop your own talent to move out bottom feeder purgatory .
We tried the manly type way of buying solid first graders only we didn’t have a turbo so it was all moot , and we also tried the knights , raiders moneyball type approach , but once again no wighton or Ponga .
We have to hope this crop coming through can transcend and get us out purgatory , because that’s our only hope . The roosters of the world have zero interest in parity . And lobby the nrl continuously to achieve this .
The issue is we massively screwed up with the transition phase from the Benji/ Robbie team , to the Moses /brooks / teddy team . We let Benji get disengaged , we let Robbie emotions dictate everything , and we let our forwards go for pennies on the dollar , like heighno and Gibbs . Chuck in the freak injuries to guys like Dwyer and Tuiaki , and we have never recovered . That whole era from 2011-2014 screwed us . We should have done what we did 2 years ago and bottomed out and rebuilt the juniors . But we didn’t - we overpaid for has beens or never was , we didn’t identify the right talent to pay like Marty and we spent 10 years chasing our tail .
The way we have been doing it the last 2 years in a competition like the nrl with no relegation is the only way . The knights did it , the bulldogs did it , and now we are doing it .
It sux ass as a fan to watch , but we should have done it 10 years ago . Instead we chose mid table mediocrity , even for that bottom to fall out .

A. Sure they have. I think we've had a few coaches in that time too, mostly good coaches. So either the club is hiring the people who cant do the job or they are doing something different to their agreed job description. My view is they are all NRL level.

We have a team, so not every player.
Is it really worthwhile to lay blame on our competitors for our behaviour. Don't you think its Wests Tigers who should be improving?

I disagree, there's plenty of talent. We've lost a truckload to other clubs because of various reasons, but importantly the club hasnt improved their performance or reputation.

There you go blaming the other clubs for our poor performance.
We had a Tedesco, a Moses, and more recently a Brooks.
You dont make it into the NRL by having no talent. The club's job is to unearth it and develop it.

The coach may review the strengths and weaknesses of a club were about to play, but to focus too heavily on other clubs at the expense of your own would not help.

I cant disagree with that, our decision makers needed to be better. Are they better for the experience 10 years later?

I think this situation with Bateman could present a watershed moment. Could improve recruitment and coaching to bring about more cohesive teamwork. That doesn't mean we won't win another spoon though.

I think you've answered your own question.

i didn’t have a question ? Unless you’re counting the rhetorical one at the start of my post ? The club has floundered from
Incompetence to incompetence from early Humphries , to Mayer to Pascoe and now finally we have a competent administrator in Richo . It’s no coincidence that the strongest period our team has had , had Steve Joyce in charge . With the current NSWrl chairman as our chairman at the time .
I think the changes have been made . We just now have to endure the process of waiting for kids to get better , and their repent attracts better veterans who attract better juniors… and so on and so on . We had a brief moment in time from 05-11 to create that cycle to ourselves , but the club was too busy fighting over which side had the better box seats , and which blazer was the shiniest .

also, episode 12 out today.

Happy NRL New Year.

We get right into the weeds of our spine players this year, and remind everyone that we were aware of just how good Lachlan Galvin was as a schoolboy.

The boys celebrate the death of the Lee Hagipantelis era and the birth of the Jarome Luai era. Also talk Terrell May and Kobe Hetherington, plus the finalising of our top 30, which had a couple suprises.

Listened in the plane on the way home from a work conference. Another great summary, like you guys I'm waiting for what falls out of the tree now. Well done

Cracked me up: Mac "...a Couple of new guys and I said, "Good Head, Good Head""

That just came across sooo wrong even though I understood where you were coming from - mind just went to the wrong place!

One time I was talking to some guys at work trying to explain the concept of software integration and I was using exagerrated hand gestures and somehow accidentally air jerked two guys by accident. I don't know what's wrong with me.
