Young guns prepared to prop up Tigers

They are the youngest starting props in the premiership by some distance, with 42 years between them when most clubs at least notch a half century.

Jack Buchanan and Aaron Woods, 20 and 22 respectively, will have to be the driving force behind the brilliance of five-eighth Benji Marshall and hooker Robbie Farah.

Both have experience beyond their years. With most front-rowers generally maturing through the mid-20s, Woods has already played 51 NRL matches. Buchanan, meanwhile, is the youngest starting front-rower in the competition. Without Keith Galloway, who has a pectoral injury, he will likely continue to be for some time.

''I haven't seen it as increased pressure,'' Buchanan said. ''But Aaron and I have had a talk. We know that we've got to keep working hard. It's a challenge for myself. I'm always welcoming challenges, so this is another one I'm looking forward to.''

Not only are they the youngest starting pairing in the competition, Buchanan was the youngest, and Woods the next youngest, starters from round three. ''It's my dream. It's what I want to do,'' Buchanan said. ''I'm embracing it, and just taking the opportunity. I'm loving it. You want to do well for your team, you want to do well for all your mates and your brothers, and you want to do well for yourself.''

Woods was superb against Parramatta last Friday night, starting for the first time this season, in the absence of Galloway. He has had many admirers for sometime, including former Balmain prop Steve Roach, who maintained on Monday that Woods would play for NSW and Australia ''sooner rather than later''. ''He virtually carried them [the Tigers] last year, when Galloway was injured,'' Roach said. ''I reckon, along with [North Queensland's] James Tamou, he's the best ball-running front-rower in the comp.''

Woods also impressed against the Eels having been unable to train freely so far this year, due to pre-season knee surgery. ''I can run, but I just need to look after it,'' Woods said. ''It'll be like that for a couple of weeks - it's only been three-and-a-half weeks since the surgery.

''I was just happy to get through [against the Eels], with the knee.''

Great wrap on these two boys. thoroughly deserved. if Woods doesn't make Blues this year, Daley is blind.

I love the attitude of both, especially young Jack's. But I did think he lacked some leg drive against Parra, and I think Willow noted this from our first trial (which I didn't see) that I hadn't noticed until now.

That is the toughness of a week-in, week-out grind in the NRL. He will have his highs and lows but no doubting he is quality!

Just like Bellamy and then Stuart preffering Ennis and then Bedurus over Farah,it does happen.

Similar story to last year with Groat and Woods. Jack looks to be handling it better so far.

The forwards copped a bucketing this time last year about being soft. I knew that period would harden up Woodsy and it did so and he played well all season.

Lets hope the extra workload and responsibility reaps the same rewards for Buchannan. I think it will and we are getting a look at the future front row for the Tigers for years to come.

What many dont realise is we got rid of Gibbs and Fifita to keep guys like Woods and BMM. Pretty happy with that choice

We kept Groat over Fifita and that was a boneheaded decision

Groat will also be a very solid Prop.

No regrets for me.

Fafitta has had a few good games in 3 years

Woods looks like a seasoned professional at such a young age and Buchanan seems so mature for such a young bloke….This is our front row for years to come...HOPEFULLY....THESE ARE REALLY GOOD YOUNG PLAYERS!

Woods is class. Here's hoping he can get through the next few weeks and then come out firing.

Buchanan is a youngster who is doing a very admirable job. He still has some things to work on which will come in time but his effort cannot be faulted at all.

An experienced head alongside these two would be so extremely handy.

THis is why I love this club, we give a guy with great work ethic, huge heart, talentand and a nice guy a chance to prove himself on the biggest stage, NRL. Its a club with alot of junior talent, but we need to protect out talent from cashed up clubs eager to pluck our best away. The junior need to see a path to first grade, or like Buchannen, they move clubs to get a crack. Congrat to the person that got this guy, even if it was Timmy. Congrats!!!!

Yeh but Fifita was a muppet - he wouldn't have gone anywhere if he stayed at the Tigers.

I know this is selfish but do we want him to make the Blues side ??

Hahaha! Worried he might smash some of your cane toads, Happy?

NSWelshman wouldn't do that.

Woods IMO is the most important player to retain long term after we've now re-signed Farah.

Woods needs to be locked away and be a Wests Tiger player for life, he is the best forward to come through the WT junior ranks in our existence & will only get better.
