Bob Fulton has backed youngster Curtis Sironen to play five-eighth for Australia in the future.

RUGBY league Immortal Bob Fulton has given Wests Tigers prodigy Curtis Sironen the ultimate endorsement - declaring the 19-year-old will one day play for Australia at five-eighth.

With the Wests Tigers sitting dead last on the NRL table after eight rounds, the long-time and highly respected NSW and Australian selection adviser said Tigers fans had every reason to get excited about this son of Balmain great Paul Sironen who has only played nine NRL games.

"I've got to say something about Sirro's kid," Fulton told Radio 2GB in the wake of the Tigers' soul-destroying 40-4 defeat to the Bulldogs last Friday night. "I watched him closely. I think that kid will play for Australia one day. At five-eighth."

Sironen only recently returned from his second serious shoulder injury, which has limited his progress over the last two years.

Despite that, he played only three games back in Holden Cup before the NRL team's injury crisis forced coach Mick Potter to rush him back into the top squad when Benji Marshall suffered turf toe.

Given Sironen's form in his three games since, Fulton's advice to the Tigers was to keep Sironen playing in the halves and resist the temptation to move him into the forwards just because he is big enough to play in the back-row.

Sironen is probably the biggest five-eighth to ever play NRL, standing at 195cm and weighing 103kg - and he is still growing, having done limited upper-body weights because of his shoulder injuries over the last two years.

Fulton said on 2GB: "I will say they have got to stick with him at five-eighth because when you look at the likes of Sutton and these bigger types of five-eighths, and you talk Wally Lewis, he was a big five-eighth and one of the greats of the game, an Immortal."

Fulton himself was one of the greatest five-eighths to ever play the game and he is not the type to come out with statements like this for the sake of creating a headline.

However, Sironen's rise could create a dilemma for the Tigers, who are also about to extend Benji Marshall's contract until the end of 2017.

Marshall is signed up until the end of next season but is negotiating an upgraded contract extension.

It's been reported when Marshall signed a four-year deal in 2010 it was understood that it would be re-negotiated after the new TV deal.

The Tigers also have two other outstanding young halves prospects coming through their ranks in the shape of 18-year-olds Luke Brooks and Mitchell Moses.

Moses is the nephew of another Balmain great, Benny Elias, while Brooks is rated arguably the best young playmaker coming through at any NRL club.

Andrew Johns is already one of Brooks' biggest fans, with Johns convinced that the young Tiger will be a full- blown superstar in the not-too-distant future.

There was even a push to play him in first grade last week against the Bulldogs before Marshall was cleared to make his comeback.

The obvious question looking forward for management will be how the Tigers can keep all these young guns happy if Marshall is locked in until the end of 2017 on a deal reportedly worth $4 million?

Marshall is still one of the game's best playmakers when his pack is going forward and at 28 has a lot of football ahead of him.

He has also given tremendous service to the club since debuting in 2003 and is worth his weight in gold from a marketing perspective.

Gee big call Bob, also agree as to how we can keep our potential 'stars' whilst extending Benji's contract.

But what has he done yet? Seems to be a long way off first grade standard at the moment, let alone representative class. Give him time. Too much pressure at this stage isn't a good thing.

Wow bozo must be his manager.
IMO he's a running backrower at best. I know he was treated with preferential treatment in the lower grades coinciding with his promotion to first grade.

I'm not comparing the two players but miller was dropped because he couldn't direct or lead the team around the park. Well with Sirro playing in the halves that's his job and he's failed to do that.

I'm also not saying miller was the answer either. I'm just showing the favoritism.
I hope I'm proven wrong as we desperately need someone to step up , but I don't think Sirro is the man.
Our future is brooks and Moses.

I agree with all that, but the highlighted bit especially,I think Sirro has to go to 3,or 11 with benji at 6 and Brooks at 7.

Have you ever listened to Bozo??? For a champion player and for a guy who coached successful teams in Manly and Australia, he comes across as bright as Blocker when it comes to actual gootball knowledge. Now given his record thats a harsh call by me, but just listen to him one day on 2gb…..gibberer

He hasn't actually done much in 5/8\. What is Bob Fulton basing this knowledge off? His NYC games?

Maybe the fact Sirro Senior threatened to kick his butt if he didn't say something good

Personally, I think some of us are perhaps getting the lines between future potential and current ability a wee bit blurred. Bozo's simply talking about the future. No mention of him going to the World Cup later this year. Based on what i'm seeing. Sirro looks like a 19 yr old kid with minimal experience, but some obvious talent which will shine through with more and more first grade. Judge him in 12 months and see where he's at. Then do it again 12 months later. If he's still the same player then Bozo's lost it.

Iam sure young Siro might end up playing for Australia based on his size and bloodline, but at present he like most of our players is struggling just to play at first grade standard. If we can one day assemble a pack forwards that are willing to play the power game ,he may be our John Sutton style no6 and let me tell you Sutton is the unsung hero at present in Redfern

I really don't see any value in these comments about players who have only played a handful of games.

5/8 for aus don't think so ,has done nothing yet to warrant such talk don't think he should be for tigers either maybe back row?

Bozo Fulton has played the game at the highest level,he is an immortal, and you
would think that he can spot a good player of the future,i respect his opinions, but Curtis will be a ball playing lock or centre in my opinion.

Bozo is a bit over the top, but Siro looks like a super talent to me.

given his a kid who has missed alot of footy, ball in hand he looks awesome, He has good footwork and seems so strong in the contact, looks a very good prospect. Personally I think edge back rower might be his long term go, Im surprised more people dont rate him.

Some one lambasted me for saying that Brooks would be a Superstar, saying words to the effect that it was a stupid comment from a one eyed fan, good to know that Im in good company with Joey saying the same thing.

And from Fulton who would have seen much less than a handful of games from the same player.

I'm also surprised - posters like 851 I normally agree with - cant see what people expect of someone so young - and who has an injury delayed start to this year. I reckon he looks a chance to break out of most tackles; not many of our players do.
