It’s funny how a discussion topic heads off in all different directions. This one has become a sentimental journey for some.
Anyone remember Warren Boland’s playing days? I think he started at the Tigers then went to Wests. He was a reasonably fast, tough winger, if I recall, but only had a relatively short career. Finished up working for ABC radio calling the league. I thought he was very good in that role and, in my opinion, far more articulate and fluent than recent callers. What happened to him?

In his playing days, Warren Boland was working for 2SM - that was when 2SM was one of Sydney’s most popular radio stations
I still hear him occasionally on the radio today - I think he calls footy in Queensland

Very interesting. So it wasn't ABC but 2SM he was on? I used to listen to 2SM all the time.....for the music. I used to collect the Top 40 charts they put out!

Warren worked at 2SM at the same as time as me - he was working in the religious department (we all called it the GOD Squad) (2SM was owned by the Catholic Church at that stage). Warren was responsible for religious programmes the station ran on Sunday nights. He was a terrific guy and very good at his job. Went onto bigger and better things. 2SM was sold and was bought as a feeder station for a regional radio network and didn't care about ratings in Sydney. When I was there, 2SM had just shy of 25% of the Sydney audience (unheard of these days) - once the lunatics took over..... Think they have about 1-2% now. Sorry for high jacking the thread - just answering a few of the questions.

Don't apologise Russell because, even though I get fed up with the occasional digressions, your recollections are very interesting to me. As I said, I was a big fan of 2SM (being a music freak from way back) and I never knew the reason for its demise. I do recollect Boland being an intelligent guy who spoke well so it doesn't surprise me that he was good at his job and went on to greener pastures. (I guess this included the ABC) Thanks for sharing. 'GOD Squad', I like it!

Always thought he seemed out of place in those Magpies fibrous teams

No love for Les Boyd?

Yep here! My absolute favourite to watch as kid. Legs like tree trunks but had amazing pace and very hard to tackle. I think he was the first of the modern day back rowers and in his own way changed the game. Great front in defender as well.

He was areal firebrand when he first arrived at West’s and I remember watching him at Lidcombe Oval and teams Would try to bait him and he’d do something silly and get sent off. Masters arrived and settled him and he went on to play for NSW and Australia.

Obviously known for the origin incident with Brohman but I found him to be a lovely guy off the field.

**My saddest Wests supporter days were losing Les and Joe Cool to Manly** and Teddy to the Chooks.

Yeah that was a really low point losing those two and hooker Ray Brown also, all at the same time, to the bloody silverttails of all teams! Roy obviously didn't instill enough hate for Manly into them as we all thought he did. Either that or money just talked ?

Not just a sad day for Maggie supporters though, as I felt your pain when Artho and co ripped your team apart.

Yeah they were good times - Ron E. Sparx as you say, Ian McRae and the Hon Nick Jones, George Moore and Mike Gibson, Keith Williams, Ian Grace, Trevor Sinclair etc.

Tony Ford, wests fullback, would kick the ball higher than those posts at lidcombe, Tommy was a legend, and Benji for WT

Other names I thought of were Gordon O'Byrne, Graham Rodgers, David White, John Torv, Mike Drayson all come to mind.
The record library girls would ring around 80 record stores in Sydney each week to get sales figures and we would compile the chart every week from that. It was quite accurate.

That's right Mike - it also morphed into "The Power" and AM "Album Music"

2SM used to put on a lot of free concerts - best known was probably the Concert of the Decade at the Opera House in 1979 but they also put on a lot of free concerts at the beaches around Sydney.

I was just looking up some of the concerts they put on - in 1976 they put on a concert at Bradfield Park in North Sydney - right next to the bridge. Headlined by AC/DC and Billy Thorpe. Would have shook the foundations of the pylons.

Yeah they were good times - Ron E. Sparx as you say, Ian McRae and the Hon Nick Jones, George Moore and Mike Gibson, Keith Williams, Ian Grace, Trevor Sinclair etc.

Greg Rees? And what was your role Russell?

Music Director and sometimes Album show host on Sunday nights.

That's impressive Russell and I'm sure I listened now and again on Sundays. I think I'll dig out my old top 40s and see if I can discover a new DJ name......

Other names I thought of were Gordon O'Byrne, Graham Rodgers, David White, John Torv, Mike Drayson all come to mind.
The record library girls would ring around 80 record stores in Sydney each week to get sales figures and we would compile the chart every week from that. It was quite accurate.

Did you work with Sammy Sparrow???

It’s funny how a discussion topic heads off in all different directions. This one has become a sentimental journey for some.

More Music 2SM

That's right Mike - it also morphed into "The Power" and AM "Album Music"

And I guess you'd use the same figures to compile the top 127 (2SM band frequency 1270) for the year! What a great era in music. While, I'm not a dinosaur in musical taste (still listen to JJJ), I have to say that was a truly great era in modern music! I particularly liked 1971 and 1972. So much variety, so many tunes and so many catchy guitar riffs played and recorded naturally and honestly, without the aid of computers.

Billy Thorpe, what a legend! Ha, I've noticed, not many contributors to this thread now. Apologies for getting way distracted!

Was 2sm more a tigers or magpie station...

P..S.. Russel Mullins was a fav Magpie..

Too many to list but Bruce Maguire, Bruce Sinclair, Tim Brasher, Larry Corowa, Dennis Bendall and Geoff Starling. Bing Pringle and Craig Sloane with two of my favourite lock forwards. By this I mean the lock forward who was fast, would cover right across the field all day and could run the ball. What a tragic waste we have props masquerading as locks these days.
