Tommy was my favourite all my mums family called me Raudonikis. It was a bad couple of years for wests losing Dorahy, Boyd and Brown to Manly and Tommy and O Grady to Newtown.
Wests had some lean years after that, but I did like the unheralded Allan Geelan in that poor era for Wests.
And 3 of Balmain best all came from Wests, Garry Jack, Mick Neil and Scott Gale.

Anyone remember Warren Boland’s playing days? I think he started at the Tigers then went to Wests. He was a reasonably fast, tough winger, if I recall, but only had a relatively short career. Finished up working for ABC radio calling the league. I thought he was very good in that role and, in my opinion, far more articulate and fluent than recent callers. What happened to him?

In his playing days, Warren Boland was working for 2SM - that was when 2SM was one of Sydney’s most popular radio stations
I still hear him occasionally on the radio today - I think he calls footy in Queensland

Very interesting. So it wasn't ABC but 2SM he was on? I used to listen to 2SM all the time.....for the music. I used to collect the Top 40 charts they put out!

Yeah 2SM was the bomb rock station back in the day, now it's turned into what 2CH used to be - a sedate old easy listening channel for the elderly! I wonder what happened to cause that dramatic change?

Boland co-hosted the broadcast on ABC TV when the footy used to be on shown Saturday afternoons.

Warren worked at 2SM at the same as time as me - he was working in the religious department (we all called it the GOD Squad) (2SM was owned by the Catholic Church at that stage). Warren was responsible for religious programmes the station ran on Sunday nights. He was a terrific guy and very good at his job. Went onto bigger and better things. 2SM was sold and was bought as a feeder station for a regional radio network and didn't care about ratings in Sydney. When I was there, 2SM had just shy of 25% of the Sydney audience (unheard of these days) - once the lunatics took over..... Think they have about 1-2% now. Sorry for high jacking the thread - just answering a few of the questions.

Yep here! My absolute favourite to watch as kid. Legs like tree trunks but had amazing pace and very hard to tackle. I think he was the first of the modern day back rowers and in his own way changed the game. Great front in defender as well.

He was areal firebrand when he first arrived at West’s and I remember watching him at Lidcombe Oval and teams Would try to bait him and he’d do something silly and get sent off. Masters arrived and settled him and he went on to play for NSW and Australia.

Obviously known for the origin incident with Brohman but I found him to be a lovely guy off the field.

**My saddest Wests supporter days were losing Les and Joe Cool to Manly** and Teddy to the Chooks.

Yeah that was a really low point losing those two and hooker Ray Brown also, all at the same time, to the bloody silverttails of all teams! Roy obviously didn't instill enough hate for Manly into them as we all thought he did. Either that or money just talked ?

And they played dead in the semis because they were already signed by Arthurson.

Don't believe that for a second. Boyd and Dorahy loved Wests and would not have let the club down like that. Not sure Brown felt the same way though. I spoke to Dorahy at a wests reunion dinner a few years ago and asked him about transferring to Manly. He said Manly offered him just about double what he was on and he went to Wests and said he'd stay for just $4,000 more than he was getting. Wests were so poor they couldn't even find $4,000. Dorahy said he hated leaving and his heart was always with Wests. A really nice bloke.

That's right! My memory escapes me more and more these days. Yes, Boland was on TV. Yeah, all young people listened to 2SM. It was a really cool choice in those days and they had lots advertising to promote it, including the Top 40 charts.

I used to listed to 2SM when studying for the HSC in 1968. They played great music and Mike Walsh, who went on to be a TV star, was one of the nightime DJs.

Don't apologise Russell because, even though I get fed up with the occasional digressions, your recollections are very interesting to me. As I said, I was a big fan of 2SM (being a music freak from way back) and I never knew the reason for its demise. I do recollect Boland being an intelligent guy who spoke well so it doesn't surprise me that he was good at his job and went on to greener pastures. (I guess this included the ABC) Thanks for sharing. 'GOD Squad', I like it!

Was Bob Cooper in the same team? He was a handy player too until he was suspended for 18 months for smashing a player called Lee Pomfret's face in in one punch.

Bob Cooper debuted in 1977 I think and was there until 1982 when he copped the 18 month suspension, so he would have had 1977, 78 and 79 with Boyd before he went to Manly, and Dallas was there from 1975 to 1984 so they were together for a few seasons.

Yes same era - big, tall scary dude lol. Yes I was there that day when he was sent off, was a messy fight and he came from a long way to be involved in it with fists flying all round. Started by the Steelers though and we got the penalty, but Cooper and one of theirs were sent off. Eighteen months suspension was a bit over the top I thought, but this was the Jim Comans led judiciary era that was trying to clean up the game, everyone copped heavy suspensions from Comans.

I seem to remember some horrific facial injuries suffered by the much smaller Steelers winger he smashed. Broken jaw, palate and nose I think. Not sure why I remember the morbid details. Different game then!
