Your first car - what type was it.

apologies if this has been done before.
we all remember our first car, and some funny incidents you had with it..

mine was a 4 door blue coloured LJ torana, with a massive 1113cc engine.
4 (speed) on the floor, manual.

was on my "p" plates in early 80's driving from Crows Nest to home at north ryde in peak hour traffic.

changed gears and gear stick felt loose. next thing I know I was holding gear stick in my hand up in the air. :laughing:
it had come away from the shaft which was still in gear box, and stuck up about 2 inches, so I was still able to change gears.

on cold days you had to turn the radio off so car had enough power to start, and if did not work had to clutch start it. :master: so always reversed it up the driveway just in case.

Great car, an utter death trap but alot of fun.

At one point I became aware that my Gemini key unlocked and started most Gemi's of a similar vintage and much fun was have moving them to other parking spots etc. Than there was the time the drivers seat mount tore through the rusting floorpan. Not enough metal to mend it so a bag of firewood stuffed behind the seat held it in place

'92 barina. went to the wreckers in february. it also had a sunroof, and didnt have a side mirror on the passenger side

73 xc falcon sedan . It was so bad it made our statewide work newsletter in regards if Greenpeace had ever seen it drive past they would picket it and strap themselves to the wheels so I could not drive it anymore due to the damage it was doing to the environment . Usually had to add oil every 100 kms and blow smoke like the QAL smokestacks

My second car was a 1977 Gemi. Did you know their keys also opened, but did not start, Carollas of the same vintage? Mine was also a rust bucket, but most of the rust was in the boot. I found out after going shopping one sunny Saturday morning, and buying 14 x 1.2kg cans of Chum to feed my dobermann for a fortnight. I put the bags in the boot and they promptly fell straight through the floor of the boot and onto the road.

My first car was a 1969 Ford Cortina, which was apparently the sporty car for the family … When it rained, I had to take a spare pair of shoes because the rain came straight in around the windscreen, rolled along the top of the dashboard and dripped into my shoes. 2 funny incidents in the corty -the first one was when the ex and I took it to the drive-in and put the bench seat down so we could sit at the back of the car and stretch out with our beer and pizzas (it was mid '80's) and then not being able to put the back of the front seat back up, and having to drive home with nothing supporting our backs; the 2nd was when, running late for work one morning, I took the back way from Blacktown to Mt Druitt, along Kildare Rd. Of course, I got pulled over. The young cop came over and asked me if I realised I had been doing 97km in a 60km zone. I was stunned! When I asked him if he was sure, because I didn't think the car could go that fast, he asked me to get out of the car. I very politely declined because I had on my koala shaped, fluffy slippers ... did I mention that sporty families in 1969 apparently had no need for heating in their cars? So, after him trying to defect the car (I don't know how it passed!!) and me copping a $120 fine - I only earnt $204 a fortnight then - I still made it to work on time ...

Nissan SSS Pulsar, 1999 model. Great little car which didn't miss a beat over 140,000km. Wish I still had it to be honest.

1989 Toyota Carolla, two shades of brown (bonnet hand painted, spray cans) and a broken tail light and radio. Bought off my sister for a 1000, then she traded it in without asking me for her ex-husbands [edited by Mods] XR8.

My first car was a 90 VN commodore. Had it for seven years and until last year when I bought my brand new VE.

It took a lot to part with that car, she was good to me during my apprenticeship when i had little money and she lasted so long where all my mates either traded up or wrote off their first cars within six months.

She now resides with my grandparents up in Deepwater, my grandmother uses her as a runabout in and out of town.

My first car goes way back to 1957\. It was a 1950 Vauxhall Wyvern tourer, which I bought from Strathfield Motors for $598 (299 pounds). It was a typical long-stroke, four cylinder English engine and had a three speed box with the gearshift on the stick. There was no syncromesh on first and worn syncro on second so you had to "double-shuffle" with the clutch to get into second.
After a couple of months and out of warranty, I used a lot of used sump oil, because it burnt so much oil. Three nights drive from work at Regents Park to University at Kensington and return sure used a lot of oil.
My girl-friend at the time (now my wife) hated the car, but it only let me down twice, when it ran out of petrol.
I traded it in on an FE Holden, which was a great improvement.

When I was at High School I had a part time job cleaning a butcher shop after school and on Saturdays. I saved enough money to buy a 1969 fire engine red Datsun bluebird. It was a sh_t box but I was one of the first kids to have his own car and be able to drive to school. It was full of body putty and the heater used to leak onto the passengers foot. I took my mates away for the weekend to Norah head and stayed in a tent (another story) we went into the Entrance on the saturday night and the starter motor died. Everywhere we went we parked on a hill so I could clutch start the car while my mates pushed it. After saving a bit more money I was very proud of my HD Holden Station wagon with curtains and the obligatory (in those times) mattress in the back, Suzie's mention of sitting in the car watching a movie at the drive-in brings back memories of the good old HD.

One was mechanically wasted but panels were fine, the other a rustbucket but sound engine wise
mate and I spent a few weekends swapping panels and this and that from on to the other.
Never forget the sound of them.

I'm thinking about buying a VE Omega, without the spoiler - they look mean as.
Hopefully a white one but not too picky on colour, as long as the price is right.

Still got my first car, I have had it for just over a year now.

Mitsubishi FTO, 95 model, 197 000km, semi-auto, looking at selling it soon for a newer car though, probably an Omega.

I had a problem with it not long after I got it, as it turned out the master cylinder packed it in, that resulted in my calipers locking up my breaks after driving for 15 minutes or so. That itself resulted in my breaks wearing down partly to the metal, the wheel disc glowing red with smoke coming out, the breakline melting with breakfluid coming out of it and me doing 30km in an 80km zone trying to get it home!

After getting the poor thing towed to Midas, the guys there did a great job, they said it was very bad and I was very lucky myself and also lucky it didnt do damage to the gearbox. But its been great and I havent had a problem since!
