YOUR JOB?

@GNR4LIFE said:
Am an Admin in Children Services. Use to work as a Teachers Aide, but unless you work full time, there's absolutely no funding anywhere. So i had to look outside the box, and got a job working in an office. Very different to what i'm use to, but am really enjoying it. I'm the only guy in a group of about 10 women.

Ah, that explains your attitude sometimes GNR lol

Currently a trainer and assessor for diploma of management and cert III bus admin. Used to do high risk training - confined space, work at heights etc

Got all my hands on experience for being a T&A by being a superintendent for a fairly large CQ company.

I really enjoy training, teaching people.

have really enjoyed this thread! thanks Demps.

ill try to keep this as concise as i can (rambling on is a favourite hobby of mine!)

currently i am in the prestigious position of…console operator at a petrol station!

i started out as an architectural draftsman, until i came back from a few years in London and there was no work for me. at the time, the mining boom here in Perth was just beginning, and almost anyone who knew CAD software could get a job.

so i fell into Civil Design and loved it. did it for 10 years and got to a Senior role for a few years until the entire industry decided to collapse. money was amazing, i had a great job but there are a few elements within the industry i am not unhappy i dont have to deal with....

so i am now amongst the thousands of engineers and designers in australia either unemployed or out of their career. i have tried absolutely everything to try to transition to Urban Development, as they use civil designers and the software i am an anorak with (12d Digital Terrain Modelling - i even won an award from 12d for customised interface and workflow procedures), but seriously EVERY single job asks for 2-5 years current, VERY specific experience, and all mine is in mining. i was actually surprised the servo gave me a job to be honest.

i have been looking outside WA a lot too (esp Sydney! would love to get to tigers games and do what i love for a living!), but have so far been unsuccessful. close a few times, but just didnt get over the line. :frowning:

i always thought i would be able to simply go back to architectural drafting as a fallback, but now none of the residential companies use AutoCAD, so i have just completed a short course on ArchiCAD - to add to my list of software packages i know! whether this will help or not is yet to be seen, as there is still the current experience thing and my architectural experience was in commercial projects, not houses. still, at this time CAD monkey is a big step up!

so here i am back where i was years ago whilst studying. fortunately, i am more mature and have far less ego than i did when i were young; god knows i have to check it at the door every shift!

im a positive guy though, and know i wont be there forever. i work in a nice area and get my mental stimulation from the customers - who are mostly very respectful and courteous, unlike in other areas where the public will treat sales assistants, etc. with utter contempt and just plain rudeness!

i try to get something more out of it than simply helping people have a full tank of fuel, so i talk to my customers about all sorts of things and love to see them leave with a smile on their face (okay, mostly women!) after my stupid jokes.

but i cant do this forever. the pay is just abysmal and i wouldn't still own my house without my amazing parents. its disheartening working a full week and still not being able to fulfil my financial needs. but i just keep trying new and different things (for a short time even had 2 jobs) to get back on my feet.

i regard highly people who do a job that contributes to society in such a positive aspect and admire everyone here who has such noble jobs in healthcare, kids with disabilities, garbo, etc.

okay, i did say i would TRY to keep it short!! :blah

Some interesting responses here, keep them coming.

Well , add yours then Willow

You, along with a handful of others on here already know what I do Happy, but ok, I'll respond. I'm a Federal Agent with the AFP. Been doing it for 12 years and I am an investigator first and foremost, but have spent a few years in digital forensics and I've also spent a few years doing higher risk tactical work. Currently working drug investigations at the moment but I was recently specialising in cyber crime which was very interesting. At the end of the day, I find it a very rewarding and interesting job.

A job filled with Highs, Lows and Danger. You see a lot of the dark side of life. Take care Willow.

I love your positive attitude and the fact that you don't give up Turnstyle.
With that attitude expect the best to happen.

Turnstyle, keep your chin up,you sound like a very intelligent and well educated person, something will come along for you because you go out and have a go,unlike some in our society that think everything comes to them….

Hard work pays off...it's just a matter of when...best of luck mate,cheers....

Bit late to this one, but still: I'm a magazine editor. Financial markets. It's ok, hard work for the money nowadays but we're an independent company and we have fun doing it. The odd thing is that my wife and son are in Perth but the office is in Sydney so I do FIFO. Which is a bit of a pain in all honesty - but I try to arrange my trips around fixtures!

Thanks very much TT, TM and CB; i really appreciate your kind words.
i guess all i can do is _all_ i can do…so i do!

What an awesome read mate. Chin up turnstyle the tide will change.

I work as an Underground Operator in a Coal Mine. I do a week on/week off and i'm not in it forever, just until I achieve some short term goals. Previously I studied Exercise Science at Uni but i'll probably never use it. The wife and I would like to run a hostel on the beach eventually.

Haha, yes I love fishing too mate and it is a cool job. I'm very fortunate although I've also worked extremely hard to make a success of it.

No jobs at the moment, although I do employ a few people. I'll keep an eye out for something in R&D?

I did a similar job to Willow for 22 years on a state level (NSW and Qld)

I got out 6 years ago and am now an Operations Manager for Australia's largest self storage company.

So I'm still providing secure space, just not putting people into secure spaces any more.

If you need storage, let me know… I'd be Happy to help fellow WT supporters
