I reckon every forward has the place doing dirty hit up Watto. Lawrence has his fair share. Brad Clyde thrived on them.

Siro is what 21? Played 5/8 until he hit the hardest competition in the world and I've into the engine room with the big boys. I think people forget that. Just cos he's naturally big we think he should have developed the mental side too. We'll he was groomed his whole life at a half, so it will take time for him to mature mentally into the backrow role.

Exactly right KS

I see all the top backrowers like the Thaiday's , Parker's , Gallen's , Lindner's ,Clyde's etc all busting a boiler when there sides needs help building a platform for the backs

Unfortunately some backrowers seem to get white line fever

And I am sure I'll cop some flak for this , but his old man had the same tendencies as well

I always liked Paul Sironen, hence my user name, but it was the later part of his career that I really fell in live with him. When we were real strugglers and he moved to the front row. Paul played every game with pure heart and carried us those few years. If he had that attitude his entire career he would be rated as one of the greatest forwards of all time.

Yeah he did , you are quite right KS

Maybe Noel Cleal was a better example

You just wish they'd have put as much effort into belting blokes and ironing them out as they did running over the top of them with the ball in hand

I feel exactly the same way. When we were struggling Siro really stood out. He was a great player for years but in the backend of his career he really was a special player.

I think Curtis may also come good for us. I can also see the whole team turning it around this season however a lot of things need to turnaround for us.

Disagree Happy - no flak if that is your opinion.

I watched the Balmain Tigers for many years and I never saw a better second rower than Siro play for them.

I think the game has changed a great deal and some of the players from yesterday get unfairly down graded because of the way that their "positions" have changed over the years.

Do think Siro would still be just as effective as he was then. Wish we had him now.
We have the next best thing though - have high hopes of young Curtis.

I agree… Dirty Hit-ups are part of the work load but they aint exactly his strengths. He will always be an edge backrower and within the right structure would wait his time to do his heavy lifting.

I was thinking last week about Siro, and can not understand why we wasted so much time developing him as a 6 knowing he was always going to end up with the pigs?

Paul was a great second rower , but you must admit that when he was a second rower he didn't have the Brad Clyde work rate especially in his own half with the ball

Agree with you Happy that he never had Clyde's work rate.
My memory may not be as good as yours but I always saw Clyde as a lock at the Raiders and he was adopted as a second rower in rep. football, because of the number of good locks around.

Siro was always a better attacking player than a defensive player in my opinion - so you are correct saying that his work rate was lower than say, a Bradley Clyde or a Ray Price.

That's a good question. Why didn't we realize earlier he was a backrower?

Even with his brother. Bailey will at least get a few years in the lower grades in the backrow, but I watched him 2 years ago playing 5/8 and couldn't believe he was playing in the halves. He was ordinary. But as a back rower he looks sensational. Both Sironen boys were left in the halves too long.

I am not unhappy with any of these sides.

We are not a top 8 squad, but that is due to development position rather than quality of the squad.

14\. Halatau/Cherrington
15\. Edwards
16\. Ava
17\. Chee-Kam

This would allow JT to move Sue to prop after 20 minutes with Ava to replace Grant & Woods. Edwards to lock forward for the next 60 minutes. Chee-Kam allow cover in the centres and back row. Halatau can cover back row or hooker however, Cherrington will need to see gamete otherwise he will sign elsewhere.

If we net Grant we have a chance to be competitive. There needs to be a drastic improvement by Moses, Brooks and Siro. We will only be competitive with internal improvement.

I would swap Sue and Sironen. I like the idea of Sue defending on the edge next to Moses. I have always thought he plays his best footy on the edge. Sue can then be shifted to prop in his second stint.

This one - Saves me writing it given the Grant signing is now confirmed. I would have Cherrington over Halatau

I think this is my 3rd or 4th attempt now, practice makes perfect:

1\. Teddy
2\. Nofzilla
3\. Kev
4\. Simona
5\. Addo-Carr
6\. Moses
7\. Brooks
8\. Woods
9\. Farah
10\. Sue
11\. Lawrence
12\. Siro
13\. Edwards

14\. Ava
15\. Grant
16\. Griffin
17\. Halatau

Plenty of competition for spots which is great, so there is opportunity for the likes of Rankin, Hunt, Ballin, Cherrington, Chee-Kam, Seve, etc. to make a play for the top 17 but I reckon the above provides some good balance. Ava, Grant & Griffin will keep us going forward when the starting props are off. Halatau was very solid last year & can cover a couple of positions in the forwards if need be, Griffin can also play tight or on the edge - both also have a good motor, as do Siro & Rowdy. If we're struggling for creativity, JT always has the option of putting Cherry on the bench. I'd also be happy with Sue starting in the 2nd row, moving Grant to starting prop & either Rowdy/Siro back to the bench. I reckon Rankin would be putting pressure on all our 1-5s except Teddy & Simona also.

As I said, plenty of competition can only be a good thing. But we also have players with varying skill sets which I think will allow us to vary our tactics more to target the different weaknesses of opposition teams week in week out.

Only 57 sleeps now!
