Just reading who would be considered the greatest coach in the modern era on Foxsports.
They believe it's between
Wayne Bennett 62.5% wins
Craig Bellamy 70%
Trent Robertson 65%
Have a look at other stats if your interested.
The thing that caught my eye was Bennetts wins were lower than Bellamys.
I knew Bennett had lean time at Newcastle (2012-14 with 45% wins).
Every other club he's coached he's enjoyed over 60% success rate.
Considering the players he had at his disposal, why a poor record there.
Here's a few of the notibles:
Danny Buderus, Sims boys
Darius Boyd, Timana Tahu
Kurt Gidley, Willie Mason
James McManus, Dane Gaga
David Gower.....
So many more other good players if you look into it.
I wonder why, with all these good players and an open cheque book from Tinkler, did they only manage 12th out of 16 in his final year??
I'm leaning to towards Bellamy because he seems to get the best out of lesser players with strict discipline and well organised regime.
Any thoughts, do you have a different coach worth considering?
Has Sheens got enough runs on the board from Canberra, Panthers and WT grand finals to be considered?

Bellamy is all time.
Trent Robinson seems a smart coach, he's not far behind , in my opinion.

Wayne Bennett, lucky to have such elite teams throughout his career but yeah he'd feature.

There's ya top 3 I guess , in that order.

Hands down, Bellamy. Just when Melbourne lose a key player, and you think it’s going to bring them back to the pack, he always finds a replacement.

A coach is only as good as his players. Dud players= coach having a mediocre win %. Bennett, Bellamy and Robinson have always coached teams loaded with rep players.

Bellamy would be the stand out. Yes he has had good players but most of them were not considered that good until they got into his system. Every player knows their role and has the respect to follow it.

I’d have Hasler in the conversation as a top tier as he has taken some average teams to a high level.

As far as i am concerned Bellamy is by far the best coach in the NRL era,Bennett is probably one of the most overated because he only goes to clubs that have massive financial aid from wealthy backers and he has been not very succesful in many cases

All have coached the majority of their careers at clubs that cheat the cap.

Wayne moved around a bit where the same situation didn't exist

You’re delusional if you would go with anyone but one of the names already mentioned. You can make a case for all of them.

Totally agree with you, he was an innovative coach and won many awards.
He bought along some greats, Kenny, Price, Sterling..............
I think the article was referring to NRL and not since the Pleistocene period 🤪
They should have been more specific in the heading. 👍

Bellamy has to be considered the best coach but he has been so lucky.

But Smith, Slater,Cronk and Inglis weren't stars when he debuted them.

Don't forget Wok, a lot of coaches still seek advice from him.

Wok was a great coach, his greatest achievement was getting Newtown to a GF

Warren Ryan would be up there
Canterbury premierships
Balmain two grand finals
wests Magpies semi finals

neither was Marshall or Farah
Bellamy had good players in cronk slater Inglis Smith no matter where they played I think. Bellamy's asset is taking average players and making them solid first graders

However, players are selected by the coach, but it was shown (Bellamy, Robinson, Sheens etc.) that they always found the right players for the team!

Back in day coaches relied on heavily on the talent scouts word.
There were no you tube hightlight packages to email around the country.
I know so many success stories deriving from talent scouts that my cousin Norm Provan has told me, share another time.
Even later on, Inglis was found at his dads old ground playing for Macksville country carnival when he was 15. When great coaches get these boys they have to recognise their natural talent and develope them into a team winning culture.
This is something that belly-ache does better than most IMO.
In summary, a great coach needs to have great scouts who know exactly the type of player the coach wants.

All the coaches mentioned have had rich clubs backing them and looking after their ‘caps’.
It helps.
