Such an icon of Aussie sport, a real larikin in the nicest way.
Someone who players and fans alike wanted to be around.
I cherish the memories I have of this Australian sporting hero.
RIP Marshy
💔
Sad news. A champion from the halcyon days of sport, when players were characters and were great to watch perform. And they were interesting to hear about.
Those days are gone unfortunately.
RIP Marshy, you gave so many people plenty of great memories and fun times watching you play👍.

Legend.

He was a little before my time. So my primary school days were watching Healy.

How good was Marsh ? Batting etc? Compared to other keepers

I was about ten when Marsh retired. So only have vague memories. Think he maybe slightly ahead of Healy in batting. He kept very well to pace (Lillie/ Thomo-who was erratic) he has to fling himself around. He was good against spin but the spinners we had didn’t turn it as much as Warnie and McGill

RIP Bacchus what a bloke a real hero of Australian 70's cricket and Australian sport.
It was Rod's record Bonnie broke on the way to England.
It was Rod who started the tradition of sing the team song after a victory
He was the last player to sign up to World Series Cricket because he had the most to lose, with both Ian & Greg Chappell signing he would have been Australian captain, but Rod decided playing with his mates was more important than being the Australian Cricket Captain.
What a bloke, RIP Rodney William Marsh

I was only a youngster watching him play so memory is a little vague but main memory of him aside from his keeping was him being great to watch with the bat in the World Series Cup: he could hit the ball a mile and being a lefty he always looked cool doing it👍. His forearms were like tree branches.

Read somewhere that he got the nickname Iron Gloves because early on in his career he used to drop a lot of catches. He certainly rectified that though: for a nuggety, grog-loving fella he sure could throw himself around acrobatically and took some spectacular catches.
Would've been great to have been amongst him, Lillee, Thommo, Tangles Walker and co when they were on the turps😀

What drop was he?

I’m just a younger fella getting an idea of his career. If it wasn’t for players like Marsh who paved the way for heals etc don’t think the game would be as in good shape as it is in now
