The Brooks debate will continue to rage and it’s in part due to an overemphasis on what a halfback’s role is. People just go off what they hear in commentary.I get if people think he has run his race at our club. No doubt that can be argued. But look at Billy Walters last week. Looked like a different player. You will never convince me that Brooks wouldn’t go to a new level if he went to another club. He loves this club though, and if he has it his way I think he’ll see out his career here. He’ll never reach the heights he‘s capable of as a result.
People say they want Brooks to provide ‘direction’ like he is producing a movie. Well we don’t have that many Leonardo DiCaprio‘s out there so he’s out of luck there.
Others want him to be an ‘organiser’ like he’s meant to tell 12 other guys their job on each and every play. Well that’s actually the role of the head coach and support staff in their sessions and meetings through the week.
The best word that can actually be used to describe a halfback’s role in my opinion is probably a ‘conductor’. You can influence the flow of the game but ultimately those around you need to be at their best for the overall success. And I don’t know that much about music but if the people playing the instruments are just bad, your conductor isn’t going to change anything.
Sheens, get some bloody musicians.
