The Bulldogs had already wined and dined his mother Lisa at club legend Peter Mortimer’s winery in Orange a few months earlier in an attempt to lure the Penrith playmaker to Belmore.
Major sponsor Arthur Laundy also travelled with his son Craig to Dubbo to meet with Burton’s mother at the family home.
“I rang Lisa and invited her to lunch at the hotel we own in Dubbo,” Laundy recently told the Herald.

“She didn’t want to go to lunch, so my son Craig and I went around hers for a couple of glasses of water and a bit of a chat. I said to her, ‘I know he’s very secure and happy at Penrith, but if he does come over I’ll make sure that he’s looked after’. She’s got a mind of her own. I wasn’t there to convince her. I was there to purely tell her that if he was to come across to Canterbury, I would make sure he’s looked after.
“I said I’m purely there as a mentor. I’ve been a businessman a long, long time and I know quite a few of the ropes to pull. I just said to them I will make sure these guys are looked after. My aim – and I tell all these kids when I speak to them, ‘Bricks and mortar boys, bricks and mortar’. Don’t come to me with a nice flash new car. Bricks and mortar.”

Well it's not recruitment, but the Roosters are flying Adrian Morley out from England for a GF reunion. Our 5/8 or now H/B had to fly himself to the Goldy.

Well he is going to be an assistant coach for the next 6 years if he stays at Penrith. He will have to be more patient than Fitzgibbon. I dont see him being that patient. Offer him 4 years subject to meeting certain goals. Do it now, before other clubs get in the race and we lose out once again.

On that logic, don’t you think Fitzgibbon would of signed more than Ikuvalo from the Roosters?

Roosters don't have any Juniors that's why. Fitzy did get Hynes and Finucane due to his assistant coach work with NSW though

I disagree with this. I hear so many say it these days and I get why, but i think it's wrong. While the left and right halves system these days and the way they interchange supports the argument, it fails to tell the story of the mental side of it, both for those wearing the 6 and 7, and the team mates belief in said players. For that reason I believe there is a world of difference between 6 and 7.

Exactly. Look how shocking Wighton has been since Sezer and Williams left. When he was left without a 7 his game as a 6 was rubbish

Fat pay cheques and excuses

How we can’t have 30 first grade quality players on the roster at the start of rd 1 is beyond me. NRL pays for them. We don’t have the luxury of waiting for it to happen.

Taylor did it to himself. We're the only club dumb enough to give him another head coach start when we did. He'd already cooked his Head Coaching career by being the worst man manager in history

I'm not sure they're in that much of a better position than us.

Dogs have no salary cap to work with, a new coach will want to bring in players they like. The Dragons might be a bit more enticing but Griffin has brought in a lot dead wood they're stuck with.
