Michael Maguire leaves club

Who will be better and get more out of this team ?

Those comments from Sheens were interesting though. It's a business. The club needs to start making some big calls on retention.

We have 4 guys that can potentially play first grade in the halves. We need some forwards especially edge forwards and probably a prop or two.

I see recruitment and retention as much more important than replacing Madge.
Where is the recruitment? Except for the two we snared for 2022 the club has been knocked back on every single player they have since approached.

If we’re judging Madge on results, this is the first year it should happen.

Can’t count the previous 3 years he was hamstrung by the mess Ivan left us in. Reynolds, Packer, Mbye all taking up a massive chunk of salary cap. Still paying Mbye this year but after that we are free of it, that’s why we can afford Api and Papali’i next year.
If you judge by that we were playing with about $3 million of the cap not available last night

400k Mbye
600k open spot
Twal 350k
Nofa 500k
Douehi 650k
Blore 250k
Gildart 250k
Kei 120k

All unavailable for selection for last nights game

I can def see the reasons to dump Madge although i think last 7 weeks we have played much better footy and won 3/7 despite a horrific injury toll and being down 1m in the cap to begin with.

If I look at the team stats for this year we are actually in the top few for what i would consider the effort stats like missed tackles, decoy runs, line engagements, offloads, errors.

That tells me that the coach is doing a fair job with a poor team both which is a mixture of recruiting which can be partly down to Madge but injuries. Given that I lean towards him holding on

Players need to know who the coach will be while contracted plus the club want a coach who can develop young guys into first grade. Think the knock on madge is he's trying to buy his way out of trouble.

Interesting point. Is this all on Madge though ?

I agree with everything you’ve said. Coach is not the issue. The club has a terrible image that makes it hard to attract players.

It’s easy to sack the coach and think we’ll improve, but what happens when we go backwards again? Think back to sacking Sheens to hire Potter or sacking Potter to hire Taylor. Unless Bennett or Bellamy suddenly want to coach WT, sacking the coach is not the answer.

I get it. We need more players. We've recruited quality players in positions that we need but we need more players.

It's an issue.

The thing is retention is probably just as much of an issue.

We cannot go much further back than we are now.

I'm really starting to get sick of hearing the same excuse with us. That we're in our first year of the rebuild. WTH we've forever been rebuilding and still can't identify what our teams main strengths are.
We've been depleted from injuries (and had a suspension of a crucial player in our first month) yet we were mostly in the contest with those games.
Other than last night and the knights game, think the team have been pretty courageous yet only lacking abit of polish - from having no attacking players in the team.

It sucks when our interchange use and selections are leaving us more prone to fatigue and concentration lapses. Understand they're not all great defenders however the whole balance and use of our bench is off. It's pretty poor for a high intensity game.
Some weeks we could've totally benefited from using two hookers but opted with Madden. Tuilagi and Luciano have been poor since the first month of footy but we've persisted with them. Fringe first graders like Seyfarth aren't making a hell of a difference when expectations or the bar is set so low from these players.
Joffa, Tamou and Twal (for his tackling) have been going alright. Where's the mongrel from Musgrove?
Our backs look more settled but thought it was very stupid to have both Toa and Kepaoa lining up against the Rabbitohs, when Garner at centre has been tremendous defensively. All origin players have been stepping up recent weeks so it wouldn't have been to silly to think Cook and Murray were going to have massive games - with their teammates lifting them too.
Stuff the Warriors and Titans games, last night was as important as the Dragons game and should've been won.

Hastings is now heavily marked similar to Brooks and Luciano but we haven't adapted a game plan to counteract all this. It cannot be that bloody difficult to read other players/teams and select a team that matches them in some capacity - did it with Eels and Bunnies before, though motivation levels were obviously high.
Still not a fan of our bench use and cannot understand how it's always been 1 step forward and 2 steps back. Honestly feel for supporters who pay to watch performances like last night.

Massive article, so won't post it all. This was at the end of Rothfield write-up.

Sheens insists the club has yet to look at other coaching options despite a rumour over the weekend that former Origin and Test halfback Brett Kimmorley would step in as a caretaker.

“We haven’t even gone there,” Sheens said.

“I’ll be making a recommendation to the board but it’s their decision.

“I don’t want to be the focus just to be the coach.

“I’ve been here six months and I’ve got more of a grip about what’s going on.

“We have to look at everything and then make some decisions.”

That is a big statement about making a recommendation to the Board but it is their decision. If Maguire were to be retained as per contract, would there be a decision to make?

Full thing

Tim Sheens is to undertake an immediate review of the Wests Tigers football operations that will determine the future of under-siege coach Michael Maguire before the club’s next game.

In the middle of his fourth season in charge, Maguire may have coached his last game at the Tigers.

As boardroom pressure increased over the weekend after a thumping loss to South Sydney, no-one at the Wests Tigers would guarantee Maguire’s job is safe with the team languishing in 15th place on the ladder after just three wins from 12 matches.

Chairman Lee Hagipantelis, normally talkative, directed all media inquiries to Sheens, who will make the recommendation to the board on Maguire’s position before the club’s next game against Manly on June 12.

“You could say it’s going to be an internal good look at ourselves,” Sheens said.

“We have the break with the bye and it’s a time for us to stop and reflect on our position. Obviously the coaching will be part of that. I’ll be talking to the coach.

“The recommendations will come from there. I’m not saying either way.

“The coaching is one aspect of the review.”

I pressed Sheens again on Maguire and the club’s performances since he’s been there. Ninth, 11th, 13th and now 15th.

“I’m not going to say yay or nay until we have a better look at what’s going on,” Sheens responded.

“They’ve been discussing Madge even as far back as last year when I was still in England.

“I’m not going to go there. You all brought it up again after round two.

“You’ve been around long enough to know there have been discussions and it will obviously come up and our next board meeting.

“There are elements in the club that are happy to be patient with Madge. Others aren’t.

“That’s the case at a lot of clubs when things are going so well.”

The Wests Tigers led Souths 18-12 at halftime but for the third time this season they failed to score a point in the second-half.

Not one forward made 100 metres.

Outside of James Tamou (93 metres) not one other forward made more than 75 metres.

They were absolutely trampled by the Rabbitohs’ middle forwards.

The Wests Tigers had a disgraceful 53 missed tackles, 34 of them in the second-half. Dane Laurie and Luke Garner six each, Joe Ofahengaue five.

“This is going to be a complete overview of where we’re at,” Sheens said, “We need to have a really good look at ourselves.

“We’ll be looking at recruitment, injury updates and everything else. It’s also our investment in juniors to beat off the bigger clubs that want to cherry pick our kids.

Wonder what this will mean for Koroisau. A big part of him coming to Wests Tigers was he wanted to be coached by Madge. So much so that he apparently has a get out clause in his contract if Madge isn't coach.
The Club couldn't be that stupid. After the Coach survived at the 11th hour in 2021, how could they promise his tenure would last in 2023, when they signed Api before 2022 season had begun.

I’m a Madge supporter and love his passion and commitment to the club. My favourite coach since sheens. However writing is on the wall. He just isn’t the best out of the players and they aren’t responding to him. We will have some wins and some good moments but I just don’t think his style or game plan is working.
