Wests Tigers Coaches

People still think if we get a popular coach we'll suddenly be able to attract players.

It doesn't matter who is coach, we are the joke of the league and players and player managers know this.

Players join WT for 2 reasons:
- Significantly higher money than other clubs (Api, Papali'i, Mbye, Packer)
- No other options (Roberts, BJ, Joffa, Hastings, Gildart, Peachey, Mahe, Reynolds)

That's not going to change until we have consistent finals appearances and stop leaking every event to the media.
It appeared there was some urgency to sack Maguire before he could get results, so yes it doesn’t matter who is coach, in which case we should give Kimorley 2023. So that we can give the retention and recruitment committee some work to do.
Of course, it may not look good for the board if Noddy has success, he’s the Last choice stand in coach. Not only that, but many will be asking the question, couldn’t Maguire have done that?

What makes Cleary such a great coach is imo his ability to sum up a player's skillset and work that player into the gameplan based around the skills and limitations that player possesses. Brooks is a great example of this and Cleary's results with him only reaffirm his status in the game as a great coach. All the great coaches have this ability = Sheens, Bennett, Bellamy, Cleary and I'm going to include Payten as well.
Good coaches have the team organised and bodies in motion.
Cleary has a team of young athletic keen players who buy into what he wants.
In every play you rarely see a panther walking. When the opposition are trying to score in the corner you will see half a dozen panthers there in defense.
They always have their lead runners in position and their defensive line always set.
They kick to the corners and have a great kick chase.
Our muppets continually fail to do the 1%ers and by ¾ time those lack of effort areas start to build up to the stats are against us and inevitably so is the scoreboard.
We started the year with awesome completions and at times our D was sound but you have to have a complete game otherwise good teams pick you apart.
I'd like our new coach to concentrate on high completion rates, less errors and penalties and win the battle of possession.

Sorry I can't entirely agree with that.
Are you saying that if Bellamy got a 3yr gig starting next year that he wouldn't be able to attract players to this club?
He would probably bring Munster and a host of players up for renewal and who want out of Melbourne.

I think the angst surrounding missing out on CC stems from the fact that the media, and us Tigers fans by extension, saw him as the next Craig Bellamy, only needing his signature to ensure the next 20 odd years of success for our team. CB knew that a better offer wasn't too far away when he said no to us, I'm guessing that CC is hoping for similar.

Personally, I see the stars aligning for us signing Woolfe. He wants back to NRL/Australia, with the Warriors not included, and we want a developmental coach, which I'm guessing is as much to do with developing our younger players as being willing to take on board direction from Sheens. This rules out established coaches, unless they are very desperate, which we probably don't want anyway.

…he says in a very angry/ranty way…
He’s right though. Not only do people get way too invested in things, the amount of hate directed at each other merely cos they may or may not rate a certain player is another sign people need to take a good look at themselves. To some, saying something like Luke Brooks goes ok is about as offensive as telling them you plan on making them watch as you slap their child in the face and make a pass at their wife.

I’m not convinced Bellamy is the legendary coach many think he is. For one, he doesn’t have the courage to step outside the Storm comfort zone. All the great coaches have had success with different clubs.

Bellamy would never consider coming here for the same reasons I mentioned.

If we suddenly had Munster and Haas at the club we might attract more players too.

Neither of those events is going to happen so I stand by what I said.

Happy with Bomber. Good experienced coach. Only question is whether he can help attract good players to our club.

I don't want to be gloom and doom but we are not going to buy a premiership via recruitment alone. Melbourne can't do that. The Rorters can.

We need smart recruitment and junior talent to come through the club.

Then we need to retain the right players.

We've signed two guns for next year. The big question to me is do we have the right bunch of juniors coming through.

I do find it ironic. Back in 2006 we were looking for a quality halfback to replace Scott Prince and John Morris was the underwhelming replacement.

16 years later it appears that history might repeat itself. We're replacing a very well credentialed coach. Most people seem to want Ciraldo or Payten but we might end up with Morris instead because they don't want to join.

I did say "entirely"
Both your statement and mine are true,
a. If a supercoach were to come here he would certainly attract better players, if you don't agree with that I'm gob smacked, and
b. it won't happen because we are a coach killer for reasons stated.

I've listed a few Sharks' players who came through the Academy with Morris. Our own Kitione Kautoga came through the Sharks' Academy and played in the same NSW U16s team with Henry O'Kane and Kade Dykes.

Blayke Brailey
Ronaldo Mulitalo
William Kennedy
Teig Wilton
Jesse Ramien
Briton Nikora
Sione Katoa
Connor Tracey
Luke Metcalf

Flanagan, Xerri and the older Brailey brother were also Academy members as were Pele and Dykes.

Yeah it was great, netted us the lofty spot of 9th place.

Great research.
How would you feel with a gun like Xerri joining us considering his past.

9th place compared to where we are now sounds pretty appealing imo.
Im sure if we went Cleary style and offered 5 year contracts like 1.1M to TPJ, 950k to JAC, 800k to Nikora and a couple of others we’d get there next year.

Problem is we’d be back down to 10-12th the following year which has been our cycle for the past 8 or 9 years.
