Wests Tigers Coaches

Why would Payten give up his dream job ? Wow he has done a great job I seem to remember players like Drinkwater ,Robson, Deardon being ok players but nothing special .Well they are special now .The cows so impressive they look like a side that's really well coached ! I wish !

Wests Tigers will alter their approach to selecting a new head coach after missing out on their No.1 target Cameron Ciraldo.

The Tigers are in the midst of drawing up a hit-list of potential candidates after coming up with more than a dozen names of would-be coaches.

The Sunday Telegraph can reveal the likes of Stephen Kearney, Dean Young, John Morris, Jason Ryles, Shane Flanagan, Josh Hannay, Kristian Woolf and Steve Price are among the names of people who the Tigers are set to explore.

Others include Canterbury assistant coaches David Furner and Craig Sandercock. Furner has a long relationship with Tigers head of football Tim Sheens. Sheens coached Furner as part of the Raiders 1994 premiership win while Furner was Sheens’ assistant coach during Sheens’ stint as Australian mentor.

Sandercock took control of the Bulldogs on Saturday night in the Covid-19 related absence of Mick Potter. He worked at the Tigers as Jason Taylor’s assistant coach in 2016.

North Queensland premiership winning coach Paul Green is not expected to be considered for the role while the likes of Ryles and Price have given their commitments as assistant coaches to the Roosters and Cronulla respectively for at least next season.

Kearney, who is Bellamy’s assistant at Melbourne, is reluctant to return to head coaching after unsuccessful stints at Parramatta and the Warriors.

Brett Kimmorley is also in the box seat to be retained and will be given every opportunity to show his worth as a long-term coach of the Tigers.

Unlike their pursuit of Ciraldo where the Tigers made it clear who they wanted they will enter the next phase of finding their head coach with an open mind.

That short-list will be whittled down to three or four candidates who will present their vision to the board and Sheens who will oversee the appointment.

The first question they will ask any potential coach is; ‘do you want to lead this club’? Ciraldo was presented to the club and offered a five year deal but this time around they want the coach to present to them.

The club hope to have a coach installed before the end of July.

Tigers greats Benji Marshall and Robbie Farah are expected to play a key role in assisting whoever the next coach is. The duo have dipped their toe into coaching but it is understood they are keen on pursuing a senior coaching position and have been earmarked as potential first grade coaches art the club.

Sheens may also have a more hands-on role with the coach especially if the club’s appoint a relatively inexperienced mentor. Sheens gave former coach Michael Maguire free air to coach the way he wanted.

Flanagan is considered an outside chance while the likes of emerging coaches Young and Hannay are understood to have impressed Sheens with their short stints as interim coaches.

Ex-Tiger Morris is among the favourites to return to his former club as a head coach after leading the Sharks to finals in his first two years before being dumped in favour of Craig Fitzgibbon. Morris joined South Sydney as an assistant this year.

Ciraldo is expected to remain at the Panthers for at least 12 more months. Woolf has been linked to the vacant Bulldogs job after knocking back an approach to join the Warriors.

That article is ridiculous - They throw up 8 names and then say they are only some of the ones we are exploring - throw in another 4 plus Benji, Farah and Sheens for good measure. Are they using the white pages to find a coach.

I'd say the way clubs sack coaches now mid deal will result in managers making sure that contracts have clauses in them to protect their clients when and if they are sacked. A lot of dud coach's quite likely will walk away a lot richer for no results. Much like a lot of current players.

Wasn't he here with Taylor, if he was there wasnt much he could've done to fix that dumpster fire. Honestly I think leaving probably saved his career, even if he was sacked. I never forget when we lost 8 - 0 to a second string cowboys during origin and Taylor saying how happy he was.
I’ll never forget Moses kicking for touch with less than 10min to go in that game like we were in front by 30

I notice that the Roosters coach hasn't been replaced in many years. It's really a case of the have and the have nots in relation to coaching positions.
The Roosters way is buy the players you need when you need them. Unfortunately that model does not work for rest of the teams because they get the ones every club wants and keeps them till they become surplus. Keeps them firmly entrenched in the top half of the comp - usually.
Given the talent Robinson has at the moment to work with compared to a lot of teams below them and they are struggling in 10th position -sort of puts into perspective the value of coach v squad.
Wouldnt Maguire/ any of our coaches have loved that squad to work with. No one doubts about Robinson being a good coach but even he needs the best of the best to get the results.

It’s funny had people say they a coach or player is fantastic, but the truth of pudding is u never see a GREAT coach or a GREAT player ever go down to a crap team and try and make them better EG : Bellamy won’t take the tigers but went to the cashed up storm , CRONK left storm to go to the next best side the roooters

Ciraldo was never going to come, he is to comfortable at the pandas. There are still plenty of guys that can succeed if given a chance. Avoid Barrett, and the more popular of the rest mostly have decent coaching records. Times are changing, not just us but at most NRL clubs. I year disposable coaches will become the norm; like most big sports.
Here is the squad, coach.
I’m in two minds over the Ciraldo rejection. Like you, I never thought he would take the job for a few reasons. He certainly must have given our powerbrokers reason to think he wanted the job. He certainly had a thorough look under the bonnet, Hopoate style, 7 hours at the CoE.
Publicly his rejection was due to our cap/roster still needing some heavy lifting. I’m not buying that because he would have had a reasonably accurate idea of it’s state prior to meeting. Anyhow, we really only have Brooks and Mbye as negatives on the cap and Luciano as a positive counter balance?
Our dominant selling point was “junior development “, but there are at least half the clubs better at it than we are?
Cleary said Ciraldo can have whatever he wants in his contract, so he re-signed for another 12 months.

The Roosters are much better at junior development than most other clubs. They contract many of their players at age 15, 16.
