Wests Tigers Coaches

Without sounding like a tool, I have coached at a relatively high level over a number of years in another sport. Coaches know when a coach is good, bad or just not right for the team. Let me tell you, as a coach, it was so bloody obvious that Madge wasn't good for the Tigers. Sheens being as experienced as he is would have seen it from a mile away with Madge.

Madge wasn't good at explaining things...the documentary and his press conferences showed that every time he tried to it was a word salad; not very clear, didn't really address or solve the problem. Young players/the current generation need this more than ever and you could see that they were constantly confused about the game plan, which resulted in inconsistent performances etc. Then they were told to work harder.

The first thing Sheens said when interviewed on NRL360 after the Madge sacking was "we need a development coach". What this means is, "we need someone that can nurture and develop players, explain things well, man manage well and command respect without dishing out the discipline (the opposite of Madge)". Obviously discipline is needed, but not constantly. In a full-time environment it becomes exhausting.

Was Benji the right pick? Time will tell. From his interviews he's saying the right things. He seems to have the right temperament, is articulate, has played the modern game, and if anyone is going to have an eye for someone who'll make a good coach, it's Sheens. What we don't know is whether he can manage the pressure in the down times, manage the squad and his support staff etc. Coaching is really hard and takes a lot of experience. You're basically like a senior executive, and Benji is young.

Would I have picked Benji? Probably not. I would have given someone like Ben Gardiner a go...someone with a good number of years of experience in coaching. Additionally, i would have just said "Sheens is the coach for 2 years, then we'll announce a successor", rather than announcing Benji way down the track. That was unecessary...

Anywho, sorry for the long post - just had some time between meetings. I'm definitely in Benji's corner but we'll see how it goes.
Well written and said

Thanks champion @Bigscreentv.
I think that maybe the reason the club via Sheens announced Benji was to provide some sense of certainty/continuance going forward, contrasting the perceived changes of our coaches in past seasons.

Agree mate getting angry at players because they don't get the best out of your coaching principles would wear thin.

Hoping Sheens sticks around in the back ground when benji is in

I think all coaches who have been successful at winning premierships can coach, it's just that they can't be successful all the time because of a number of contributing factors - largely the players at their disposal.
Winning premierships doesn't come easily and players have to have the desire, ability, and buy in as a squad if not the coach is on a hiding to nothing - whether you rate him or not and despite past success.

Was Madge recruiting for the dogs last year. JAC & TPJ.
These players hate Madge , just saying.
happy days
in the name of Gus

Can't see how they would work well together. We were prepared to let CC choose whoever he wanted as an assistant (even Barrett). If this is true, its Gould enforcing that decision 100%.
Was reported Gus met Madge for lunch the other day...

Interesting pairing...

One, Ciraldo.... has players respond well and positively.

The other, well..... the opposite.

Absolutely.... chalk and cheese. Both stubborn as hell as well.
Bulldogs could implode massively next year. Great team on paper but surely others issues such as salary cap pressure, rookie coach and a old style assistant/GM could cause the club some big headaches... heres hoping 🤭

They have the right playing squad for a blow up next year. 100%
