Coaches Corner

I’m pretty sure Madge was short staffed early in his contract term and on top of that he had to become the star in the sorry “tales of tiger town”

I’m having trouble understanding why they would highlight the last 4 years as a downhill slide?
Lee Hagipantelis said the same thing on SEN ..
“Saturday night represented the culmination of four years of a downhill spiral where things have not progressed or improved.”
I know I should be grateful for them getting their story in sync, but if it’s an accurate assessment then it does make their decision making even more mysterious?
In December 2020, after completion of the first 2 years of Madge’s 3 year contract, it seems our CEO and Chair thought he was doing a marvellous job.
So much so, that Madge was given a 2 year extension.
2021 was a bad year for Madge, with Covid in full swing and the board turning on him. By the end of 2021 they had tried to sack him, but sacked someone else instead. 😂
They appear to have wiped the Cleary incident from their memories.

He's argument is simple he and board provide the resources to the coach and football staff to win games.

It is fact Justin has created more resources.

The problem being he has provided those resources to the wrong people on multiple occasions.
No doubt this allows for the additional resources now being directed to the Campbetlltown, Macarthur and Inner West junior areas. We weren't able to do this for some time due to financial constraints.

I am very pleased this is happening for the betterment of WTs, Wests Magpies and Balmain Tigers. The reason is the very good young players we may have missed due to the lack of on ground resources may now be identified and retained with WTs rather than representing other NRL clubs.

Biggest load of shit. Coaches need good players not fictitious $ that players keep turning their back on.

Sheens said the club has been hampered somewhat by working out of the tin sheds. The Roosters have twice as many player support staff.

No doubt a factor in our constant recruitment struggles. But our CEO claims to have increased resources to the footy department. Why then are we seeing the playing roster getting worse year on year?

Why don't you ask Maguire that question?

Down wood spiral over 4 years , board should have reacted much earlier , We have coaches come here and they don’t get put on an 3ven playing field as our team is weaker , we buy has beens , worn out , or bench players and pay top dollar , Appi and Papi should send a clear message now to possible recruiters we want good players , also with the silence on purchase of players maybe it is for reasons like player X. Is playing semis , or still negotiating out of his contract for next year to come over , by October if it’s still quiet then no one is coming comp over , announcements should be well made

The rules under salary cap allows the strong clubs to retain the best players and attract others when needed. Players are about money and glory these days and to get that you need to play at a strong club. In the Sydney market we lay at the bottom.of the barrel and they are the main clubs that we compete against for players.
I can't believe that some still think this is Maguire Cleary Noddy Sheens or take your pick any other individuals fault- it's a club issue that has become worse in the last few years because it has become more ingrained.
Players don't want to be in Luke Brooks shoes, or AD after last week unless they have no other option.
Only a strong roster and maintaining it can change our fortunes around, but in our current position and what is available makes it seem almost impossible.

Give it until mid November I reckon?

Wonder whether Sheens and Benji would consider approaching the Walker Bros. as some form of attack consultants/tacticians if the rumours of Benji cleaning out the office are true.

Reason being is I know Sheens is always trying to think of ways to re-invent the game and thinks outside the box in terms of gameplay. Benji and Robbie were ad-lib players and I wonder whether having the Walkers input might help put some flair and creativeness back in our attack. They really lit up reserve grade with a different way of coaching a few years ago, some tactics we’re seeing a bit more in the
modern game this year with the short re-starts/drop-outs and risk/reward plays.

Just a thought I’ve considered could be something a bit different. Could they add something of value?
If you have seen The Walker Bros video on you tube you will be suitably impressed but as Gould said , which club would have the b…s to go there. Even innovation is stifled.
I’ll give you a little heads up, if for any reason the Benji experiment does not work, I predict our next coach will be one T.Payten.
Heard him say the other day that TS had rung him about the Tigers job but all ok in NQ.
He did allude to the fact that one day he would like to come back( don’t all old WT).
That being said I hope the next 5 years are firstly, a major improvement culminating in much outcomes.
Like a couple of my senior colleagues on here, I waited from 1969 to 2005 for premiership wins ( yes, I know Maggie’s out there that 69 was Balmain )I’m afraid I can’t wait that long again ! Otherwise I’ll miss it !
Go Tigers

These 3 guys need to be side line next 2 games so players know they are getting watches very closely , move around talk to the bench , gee these guys up , we need to finish on a high and win both these games

Whats an example of these resources and to wrong people TS?

Herein lies the problem on this forum and on shows like NRL 360. It's called hearsay or you could call it a smear campaign or simply opinions without facts.

Pascoe and Lee and the whole management team that sacked Maguire are also revising history when they state it's been 4 poor years in trying to blame Madge. It's been as previously stated pretty close to 10 poor years.

The board and Pascoe oversaw JT and Cleary getting the coaching positions and these guys were hopeless. How they can somehow try and blame Madge for the past poor 4 years is to me pretty pathetic.

I do like hearing that there is a clear disconnect between the CEO, the board and football operations with the CEO, board etc having to provide resources to the footy club.

I feel the big issue (and the only fact backing this up is that teams like the Rorters somehow manage to retain or recruit much more talented players than us) is that the board, CEO etc aren't very good at supporting the footy operations recruit and retain talent which I think comes down to operating within the salary cap much more rigorously compared to other teams.

If a strong current is starting to stress a boat's mooring, you put another rope on.
Successful businesses recognise potential failures before they happen and put in place safe practices to avoid these failures.
WT failed to do since we started playing in 2000.
When we started the joint venture we blew our grant on nuffties and have made bad decisions year after year.
Our football department needed to maintain a focus on development and keep the salary cap in order so we had funds to strike when quality player became available without paying overs.
Working out of a shed is no excuse for failure either.
If you have a great roster, the players only need their kit, a training paddock, gym and some methylsalicylate.. that's it!
Players make coaches. Dud players can destroy coaches.
If we are going to be successful we need most of our resources poured into pathways, keep our cap under control and recruit players like Api. It's not hard surely.

Nice thread glad to see all the positivity can't wait to see see the 3 of them commence the respective roles next year ❤️

Are you confident though ? Madge gave me some confidence because I think our recruitment was much better than previous coaches. Madge very rarely got the team performing to their ability. Cleary got them performing to their ability but his recruitment was the worst I've ever seen.

I think if we get a couple more recruits in key positions plus a really lucky run with injuries then we can see significant improvements. If we don't get a couple more recruits or we get a bad luck with injuries (which Madge suffered through this year) we won't improve.
