2023 Expectations

Our squad isn't good enough to win regularly without getting extremely lucky in relation to these two factors.

I still think the club has managed expectations poorly because they've blamed the previous 4 poor years as being Madge's fault with the inference that the new coaching team will turn things around.

It also doesn't sound like there are any good signings available.
Yep sacking Madge was a huge mistake and it has only highlighted the total ineptness of this clubs hierarchy even further. The fallout will continue with losing some of the better players in the team signing elsewhere and the very real possibility of losing Papalii also.

The good thing about this season is that the players will have no doubts that they are a pack of losers. With that clarified, they can live in reality and stop delusions of playing finals footy. They can focus on their games objectively without having to worry about the pressure of winning games to save their coach.

Having Sheens as coach is a good thing. He likes to coach teams based on the strengths of his players, as opposed to the one-size-fits-all approach that Madge had.

My expectation for 2023 is that we will unearth at least one genuine star.
More than anything the minimum expectation should be that they do the basics right, compete for the ball, play as a team, run proper support plays, tactically kick and defend well, getting back on side quickly and damn well hang on to the ball.

With that basics improvement the wins will come more often. Thats all I ask.

I don't agree with this though. I don't think it was the right decision but he is a professional coach and he had 4 years to improve us and we didn't improve. I also don't think Madge going has anything at all with the noise around IP. There is no reason for IP not to come here other than Parra are trying to retain him because they stuffed the initial contract discussions.

I think the issue with sacking Madge is that it wasn't about solely Madge's performance. It was about making someone the scapegoat.

Just asking how do you know its WT? Unless you have other evidence youre very quick to condemn. Yes, I agree it is horrible but nothing in that says WT.
That could only happen at an ineptly run club such as ours. If I read that clip out club would have been my first thought as well. And don't forget we are the tabloid favourites.

I think Maguire just wasnt able to develop players. Their skill sets didnt develop. That is a basic requirement isnt it? Was sick of hearing they trained well but didnt do it on the day.

I'm not sold on developing players though. What players aren't playing to their ability. How do you judge this ?

I don't think Madge was great or anything and I'm cool he is gone. We needed a change.

I'm just concerned that they aren't going to do any better and they've effectively stated Maguire plus injuries were the issue. They've also stated development (juniors) are the way forward. It's ballsy but it also only gives them some time.

I'm not ultra critical of the whole system in place. I think we are in a hole but the big issue has been we get played in the market but I think a big reason for that is 3rd party payments. I think Madge really improved our retention. He did though struggle to retain players but the same problems exist now, It's a bit our of control and we need some luck.

The team next year even without any signings is light years better than what’s out there now. It’s no where near a finals team though.

1. Laurie
2. Nofa
3. Naden
4. Tupou/Toa
5. Maumalo
6. Douihei
7. Brooks
8. Utoikamanu
9. Api
10. Ofehengaue
11. Papalli
12. Matamua
13. Hastings
14. Pole
15. Rua
16. Musgrove
17. Tumeth

We need another edge second rower, centre and an experienced prop at a minimum next year. We need to attract talent similar to the Api and Papalli signings. In addition a few of these kids have to come through each year and move out some existing starters
All we want is players to be the best they can be. Can’t ask anymore.

Practically every team in the top 8 have players that are superior in the physicality department.
They are stronger and faster than our lot.
I would like our trainers to address this over the off season.
Simply put, our players need to deveop better physiques, get stronger, faster and toughen up.
We are canon fodder to most opposition teams.

By the time they are in the NRL the development is supposed to be 99% done. When you buy other clubs outcasts well, you are seeing the result.

That’s exactly right. If they aren’t good enough to regularly crack first grade with their previous nrl team can they really be considered first grade quality?
This I mean regardless of the quality of the other teams roster.
Essentially I see us as a team in tier 2 of the nrl comp. If you recruit a player that can’t crack a tier 1 team they aren’t quite there.
If you recruit a player whom can’t crack a tier 2 team your doing everything wrong.

And you can go through just about our whole list and they were deemed not good enough elsewhere. But it’s the coach right 😂

Furthermore you want to recruiting a consistent tier 2 team player that the tier two team is struggling to fit in their cap or a tier 1 player that is going to demand too much of a salary to hold onto; as a minimum.

After The Poms update today we are in trouble as we still need a couple good players for next season we may improve a bit but bottom 4 I think , real shame as we have coin just can’t seem to get people on board , Sheens also needs to understand it’s not 2005 where the quality of our young guys that won we have cause we don’t , they are years away

It’s sad and true there’s definitely two tiers in the NRL now.

I actually think there are 3 levels and has been for a couple of years.
1 The Elite favoured clubs (Storm Rorters Panthers,Brisbane are also favoured but badly managed)
2 The would be if they could be (Parra Souffs Cows Sharks Manly)
3 The plebs who the NRL could not give a rat's about just to make up the numbers.
I can not see this changing in the forseable future while the powers who run the game remain. It is very sad to see the sport like this

It's the W.T. I promise you. Media boffins are protecting Sheens so they wont write his name. But its him and its a terrible look for the club.
