Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

Hypothetical given no new signings forthcoming

Would you like WT to take back Aaron "Dora" "Sharon" Woods if it means his good mate David Kleemer signs with WT?

Given lack of front rowers on the NRL market and a position WT are desperate for I say YES.

Aaron has reach the 18 games which activates his contract next year.

Not sure if that's a mutal option or not that has to be negotiated.

I can accept no signings for next year as long as there is a few top notch signings for 2024

I'd love a few top notch signings but I'm more concerned about losing juniors that may come good.

We haven't produced a prop like Pole in years if ever. He mightn't be a great and mighn't reach the heights of Sharon or Fifita but he does the little things right. He has a quick play the ball and good footwork.

Matamua looks good as does Kautoga (albeit his rookie game was completely mismanaged).

We need some class in our spine. I'm not sure if Brooks, AD and Laurie are going to lead us going forward. Hastings is a key player and he might do the job at lock but I'd like to see him make a bust. I saw him do that in the ESL.

I suppose I'd like to see the club be strategic in their signings.

I'd prefer to just buy a team like the Rorters do but I just can't see us doing that.

From The Mole:

With Andrew McCullough likely to retire, another hooker has come up on the Dragons' radar.

Unwanted Bronco Jake Turpin is in St George Illawarra's sights for the key hooking spot.

The club has already been linked with the Cowboys' Reece Robson, Rooster Sam Verrills and Wests Tigers' Jacob Liddle.

The Cowboys are likely to retain Robson, a former Dragon who is having a fine season.

Verrills is set to join the Titans next year but Liddle is likely to move on from the Tigers following the club's signing of Panthers star Api Koroisau.

That leaves the Dragons with the choice between Turpin or Liddle - and they may even take on both.

I'm with Earl,

I can't see us buying our way out of this in the short term though so we need to make a couple of good strategic signings with a view to them providing the lift we need to develop the likes of Stefano, Pole and Co. I think we have started OK with th two we have recruited so far.

You are on the money with Brooks/AD/Laurie.

My gut feel is that Hastings will play lock in defence and be the organising half in attack. We will see AD (or his replacement) and Brooks playing either side. This, touch wood, will give us attacking opportunities that will suit the style of play that Sheens is hinting at. I expect that this is a 2023 construct that will be the building block for 2024/5 (should it be successful).

We still need another quality forward and a couple of backs. Emphasis has to be on leadership if we intend to develop from within.

I still can’t believe there is no signings announcements , and yes every one don’t like leaks but I’m talking , Wests Tigers are please to announce. Joe Blow has joined for 2 / 3 years. Etc etc. , it’s either there are no signings or they are still in the top 8 , has to be
It seems the Dogs are signing everyone in the game and will discard lots down the track , very unethical but they seem to be allowed this luxury

The dogs haven’t signed anyone recently though, it’s all paper talk.

Player movement at most clubs won’t happen till after the season has finished other than fringe players here and there.

It often takes 2-3yrs of spending to get the team revamped and ready to go.

But if we break things down we are actually going after the right people in the right positions based on what is available

Api/Papa are the 2 best in their position signed the key now is to keep our cap fresh and ready for the right players. Both will make us better.

We had open discussions with Nanai, Luki, Nikora & Angus this year - all said no & are staying at current clubs. They didn't get poached by other clubs, they all chose to stay. However these are the right players for right position. Hopefully Nanai is on our radar for 24 (he only signed 1yr deal with Cowboys) & we nab an early release.

Yes we need more for 23 but there just aren't more out on the market for 23 unless we nab rejects or high priced players that will blow our cap space. So the focus is for 24 onwards and maybe we could get an early release when we snare a few more bodies to come inbound or we continue to build with 24 and the years after inmind.

It sucks but the reality is that's how the market place is situated atm.

Having a war chest of funds heading into the Nov period with a heap of roster spots & clear hit list of players puts us in probably the best position of all clubs to go hunting and snare a few more quality players provided they are for the right positions.

I agree with this comment and if this is the style that Sheens wants he needs to get Jackos re-signing done before November. He’s the important piece we have to keep.

SHEENS RECRUITS OLD FRIEND

Former Raiders coach David Furner has signed on to join Tim Sheens' staff at the Tigers for next season.

Furner is regarded among the best assistant coaches in the game, having worked at the Knights and Bulldogs over the past two seasons.

Sheens and Furner are extremely close - the veteran coach brought Furner into first grade as a player in the early 1990s and then had him as an assistant when he coached the Kangaroos a decade ago.

Furner, whose father Don was the inaugural Raiders coach in 1982, also coached Canberra from 2009 to 2013.

Hastings extending would be like a quality external signing IMO... TOP level.

We hear all over the media that Benji is well respected and would have massive player pulling power but so far ........ Crickets.. So hoping there is some coming but been very quite about it but going off the last 10 years its hard to be positive regarding recruitment.
Sheen's did say they have things in the works

Benj has been in the building five minutes. the off-contract player market is horrendous at the moment and anything we're likely to sign will be depth. November 1 is when we'll see some movement happen. Liam Martin and Dylan Brown have been earmarked, no doubt Benji will be in the ear of both of them.
