Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

I know some forum members have no time for the AFL but I've just watched the Swans beat Melbourne in the finals in Melbourne. If WT could play with 50% of the heart and passion that the Swans show every game we'd compete for the finals every year. They have a fantastic "bloods" culture from the old South Melbourne days and they play tough and never surrender. To top it off, they are an extremely well-run club and there is almost never any player behaviour issues. WT could learn a lot from the Swans.

This is a fair point, but that’s only been the case since they went away from the reserves competitions being the pathway to first grade.

It was a good system.

Granted, it was a NSWRL system, but it can be adjusted to work with QLD teams.
It’s been that way for a while now.
In reality the majority of todays nrl star players were all promoted directly from the national youth comp. Since then they are coming from Flegg but your less likely to know the player as there is a lack of promoting of that comp. But the reality is HM, SG, Flegg, Cup people are only tuning in to follow the progress of a couple of individuals. I don’t think the quality of football has been as great as the NYC when it was in its existence.

So, if there is no Magpie, even the little biddy one they have on the jersey shoulder vs the large tiger club emblem, the joint venture of Wests Magpies and Balmain Tigers is what? The Balmain Leagues is gone, Wests Magpies Ashfield is around and Wests Campbelltown is a non voting member. If Leichhardt Oval goes down the toilet, we are left with Campbelltown Oval as a possible home ground (to which the old Wests Magpies didnt have much luck after loosing Lidcombe Oval), unless we can easily find an inner West location- do you want to try and find one in the Balmain area as a direct replacement for Leichhardt or use another one in the Wests Magpies territory?

Im happy for the joint venture to call it quits and each go back to original? Oh wait- where is Balmain leagues? Sick and tired of people p'ing on Wests Magpies. If you seek to withdraw the Magpie aspect, even that little bit of recognition and, giving the dog a bone with lower grade being called Magpies, whats in it for us? Why should we bother?

PS Im not against in anyway the Wests Tigers and care about them and have been a fan since 2001 but I do care about the Magpie too. Im also for a serious look at relocation to Central Coast / Perth as long as our Sydney competition areas can be protected by raids form the other adjacent clubs. I think the prospect of Leichhardt Oval going down brings some serious questions about where we want to go as a club (location wise).

Edit- PPS at 3.51pm I'm not a great fan of the current WT board set up either and think there should be some change not sure how it can be done. I dont want to throw the baby out with the bathwater.
Wests Magpies are dead.
Balmain Tigers are dead.

There has been a new, single club in place for 23 years.

Get with the times.

Matts and ball?
Matt’s is still school age and now with the NSWRL changing the age limit of the comps it’s more likely to be the last age comp for part timers. It kinda makes no sense to have a part time comp for 19 year olds who have left school. The NSWRL should consider a full time under 20s and under 22/23s comp.

Don’t know why people can’t like more than 1 footy code? Love the AFL!

Was a craker of a game and the never give up and run run run attitude of the Swans was amazing. The fitness levels on another planet. They are the best last quarter team in the comp for a reason. They also play to the players strengths, fast, mobile, scrimmage, interchangeable plays to break the game up.

I'm ok with the reported Staines/Peachey swap. I think we get the better outcome in that

Peachey has been our worst signing this season full stop. Had really high hopes for the guy but cannot recall one single game out of the dozen or so he played where he actually delivered for us. Staines might not be any world beater either but he's at least worth a try for a year or two at the right money.

Fair and valid

The NRL could also take notes from the AFL on how to run a successful competition. But Vlandys, Abdo, Politis et al would prefer to maintain the status quo.

So you're saying we should only have one Harold Matts and one S G Ball? Aren't we better running Balmain and Wests teams in those comps, effectively doubling the players we can have a good look at for Jersey Flegg and then on to the NRL?
Fair point. I like having a larger talent pool, we should stockpile the talent.
Thanks for proving I don’t have all the answers. 😜.
