Memories

Watch from 4:53 if you are interested!

Brasher tried to help....

Roberts came in and attacked him as the defensive player after Jimmy had a shot at Ridge.

Find a moment that Jack even had the chance to sledge him in this rubbish!

This was pure thuggery like Danny Williams on Buckets!

this is the way I always saw it - the whole gay angle was a way to try and minimise the seriousness of the assault - supposedly extreme provocation.

Way better defender & positional play than Billy(not hard) but not as quick obviously. But i think the in modern game most "fullbacks "( Sloan, Campbell, Savage etc) are good with the ball in hand but lack the positional play & defense that makes a true fullback . Teddy is probably the best fullback I have seen with the most complete all round game , followed by Edwards, Treboevic & Paps.
Wow, we really see things differently.
To me Slater is the greatest anticipator of where the ball will be I have ever seen. No one comes close to be honest. He also stopped more tries than Jimmy ever attempted. Couple that with his his explosive pace and superior ball handling...Jimmy aint in the conversation Im afraid.

Got a rule implemented in his honour too....to stop fullbacks kicking blokes in the head as they tried to stop tries. His defence funnily enough was never as effective after he wasn't able to do that. Not sure in the NRL made any official rule changes regarding fullbacks karate kicking oncoming chasers in the face when diffusing bombs? That was another Billy trademark.
If Billy was around in the Jimmy Jack era or before he wouldn't have a lot of teeth in his head to work with these days. Blokes with cat-like tendencies were a fond target of the thugs of those eras.
He was a good player, playing in a time where the game was massively cleaned up definitely helped him out.
Putting his foot out when catching a bomb was genius. He couldnt be attacked in the air. If anyone came at him illegally, they got a foot in the face. Brilliant.

It's not a good argument to compare champions from different eras....diet, training techniques, video, recovery, transport and probably more.
I'm interested to know if you have lived in Queensland?
Obviously...
Thats why the players from yesteryear dont compare. They were tougher and could cop more punishment. Thats about it though.
No, from Canberra. I do follow Queensland in Origin though.

Sure. Just a shame no-one ignored the illegal tackle side of it and just buried him with a piledriver. Grubby maggot.

Lower grade legend, Josh Davis.

Many of us, for ages wanted him to debut... but he never did it.

Use to carve up the cup games.

Joshy..... Was never gonna make it - And then didn't.

One of those guys, Not big enough for back row - Or dynamic enough for the OB's...
Reckon he was still in Sheild or Massey (At Wenty maybe) up until a year or 2 ago....
Could still be.

Memories are nice sometimes . . . I was at Benji's debut, and after his first mid-air step, was left wondering if we had signed some sort of time travelling enigma, or just a kid with bad balance.
Was also lucky enough to be invited to Skando and Peachey's retirement game vs Souths on Father's day a while back. A good friend's mate was the boss of Proton at the time. Access all areas, baby. Dressing room after the game, chatting to all the players. Was part of the guard of honour onfield for Skando and Peach. Walked down the tunnel. Reached up and touched the logo on the way out. Met Dawn Fraser on the Leichhardt Oval grass. Saw Skando naked. ( don't know why I shared that ) Just a seriously great day. The birth of your children has to be put in perspective sometimes . . .

Greetings all, as mentioned previously I am starting a new thread where we can reminisce, analyse and review past players and what, if anything, they contributed to the WT story.
Wests, Balmain or other clubs are all part of our fabric.
Hope this is a worthwhile exercise for those of us who lived through different eras.
Obviously responses will probably be spasmodic but anytime you are going back in time, this is the place,
Cheers. HB61
