FIFA World Cup thread

But is that translating into adult-level success?

You can have a million kids playing soccer but it won't get you far if they are not funded and the pathways stink.

Rugby league on the other hand - very successful in turning promising junior talents into world-class players.
You are comparing a sport that has maybe 30 nations worldwide playing to another that has over 200 nations worldwide ....and just remember Football is the 3rd ranked football code in this country

I know we will never get this answer ...but can you imagine if the best from every code played football in Australia how good we would be

Do you mean soccer?

That ball was practically in Saudi Arabia. They reviewed that and still let it stand. Japan’s cheque must have cleared.
I still think it’s probably a goal.

Just because the bottom of the ball is out doesn’t mean the whole thing is over the line.

We're underdogs no one is expecting us to win. Messi still has to prove himself at World Cup level. We got this!! C'mon lads!

Looking ahead to tomorrow:

Argentina forward Lionel Messi is set to make the 1,000th appearance of his career in Saturday's World Cup last-16 tie with Australia. (Messi has had 23 efforts without scoring in the World Cup knockout stages for Argentina.)

Australia's only win in seven games previously against Argentina was in their first meeting in 1988. Current Socceroos boss Arnold played in that match.

So the rule is based on looking at the ball from directly above?

Strange

I’ve been operating on the understanding that if the ball itself has past the line it’s out - that is if the ball itself is no longer touching the line it’s out. I don’t know how you could reasonably make rulings on it in real-time otherwise.

Yoss, it's the whole of the ball. So the whole sphere . . . not just the part that's on the ground.
The whole of the ball must be beyond the whole of the line.
So the best view will always be from directly above.
That ball, imho, was in. The goal stands. You can't see separation from the absolute edge of the sphere to the line.
My son refs soccer at a reasonable level and he agrees . . . if that counts for anything :)
Edit: You see it when they're taking corners. They place it so the part of the ball that's on the ground is actually outside the corner quadrant line marking. But the edge of the whole sphere would be just touching those markings if viewed from above.
