Juniors - Pathways General Discussion

The kid looks very impressive in attack.
Does anyone have info on his defensive capabilities? None shown in that clip.

Unless anyone happens to have lived in NZ last year i don't think anyone has seen him play... Will have to wait and see him in Balmain colours in a months time

Does anyone know if the Matts and Ball teams have any trials coming up? Keen to watch some of these juniors, particularly the year young Matts kids. I just watched the Schoolboys highlights of the young 6, Onitoni on youtube and he seems to have so much time and makes everything look so easy, I'm keen to watch him play. Seems really strong defensively as well.

Not sure if any more trials, but their season starts in three weeks.

Kicks off on the 4th of Feb.

So apparently wests are playing cronulla today in a trial.
Yeah, I heard about this yesterday.

Pretty sure they’re in Cronulla though.

Wests Matt’s and Ball season-proper kicks off on 4th of February at Campbelltown.

Not sure on their SG Ball and Laurie Daley Cup results, but Wests Harold Matts and Andrew Johns Cup both won yesterday.

Karnib, Large, etc. played in the Matts game.

All lower grade squads should be announced by the club early in the week coming.

The retention of our quality juniors has been outstanding, with almost all notable talent staying with the club for 2023.

The Wests teams have their last trial games on Saturday against Cronulla and Canberra in Mittagong.

Will most likely be heading out to those games, so will have some more info for you all.

Some photos on this Facebook page from yesterday’s games:

I took my young bloke out for a look. Credit to all the boys. We watched Andrew Johns in the rain and HM in the stifling heat. Tough conditions for all. Didn't stay for the later games, the young bloke had had it. Typical early season issues with some dropped ball in both games and some noticeable issues with combinations. Both clubs ran two separate teams in HM with the strongest in the first half and the second units in the second half. Our first-half crew looked pretty solid Luke Laulili'i was very busy and probably our best always pushing up through the middle. Great early exchange when Onitoni ran direct at the line and hit Luke on the inside for a clever line break. Luke later went through and popped a perfect no-look pass off his hip for our winger to score. Tempers got heated after a lateish hit by luke on the Cronulla centre but all in all a positive hit out. Service from nine was really crisp also. Definitely not the size of last year but some really promising signs. Our second unit also looked pretty handy at times against the Cronulla second-string team even if sometimes things were a little too individual which can be expected for some trying to push their cases. Karnib carried fairly strongly, our left centre also did some good things.

The Andrew Johns and Laurie Daley Cups are just around the corner for another season. NewsCorp previews all 20 teams competing in the regional comps, starting with the Macarthur Wests Tigers.

ANDREW JOHNS CUP

MACARTHUR WESTS TIGERS
Captain: TBA

Coach: Alec Bush

Players to watch: Fullback Aaron Paea has trialled a bit as a five-eighth but looks to have cemented the fullback spot as his own. Great running game, very quick off the mark. Not a lot of size but he backs himself and his ability and is able to lead his team from the back

At six foot plus you can’t miss front rower PJ French. He leads the line not only physically, but is a leader within the team as well, with all the boys respecting and following what he says. He has good line speed, he’s strong, mobile and as tough as they come.

Surprise packet: Coach Bush has been very happy with second rower Will Jenkins in the trials, and is showing real potential to grow into a pivotal role for the squad. Now it’s about making sure he is consistent. Paul Johnston is a big, powerful winger who makes a lot of damaging runs. Still young and with a lot to learn, but with time can become unstoppable.

Why they will be competitive: It’s a first year with this squad for coach Bush but so far he has been really impressed with the talent and effort on display. It’s been a tough pre-season but all the boys have put in the hard yards and are determined to avenge their grand final defeat last season, which is ultimately the club’s goal for the year.

Last season: Third (beaten grand finalists)

LAURIE DALEY CUP

MACARTHUR WESTS TIGERS
Captain: Zac Gibson

Coach: Tom Morrison

Players to watch: Half Zac Gibson is a pivotal player of the squad now in his second year of the Laurie Daley Cup. Initially started as a hooker but moved to the halves and has adapted well. A small and stocky build but fast and illusive in his movement. Also very sound defensively with excellent tackle technique, not shying away from the bigger blokes.

Lock Luke Prebble is the kind of player most teams would want. A bit raw still at a young age, but with a massive engine, he gets very busy on the field, putting in a high defensive workrate. Tough as nails, getting involved in all the dirty work.

Surprise packet: Fullback Cooper Mangan is a naturally fast player which is a nightmare for defences. Still has a lot of learning to do when it comes to his positional play, both in supporting the attack and sweeping in defence, but has a lot of potential and natural ability which could be massive for the Tigers this year.

Why they will be competitive: Coming off a fourth placed ladder finish last season, Macarthur Wests Tigers always have their eyes on the top. Coach Morrison admits there’s a hole that still needs developing in the middle of the park where they’ve lost some forwards this year, but also thinks the side has improved in their outside backs and spine from last season. They’re fit and willing and are getting themselves into good knick as a unit.

Last season: Fourth (eliminated Finals Wk 1)

Junior rep teams are out.
About time!
Doesn't appear to be any surprises on first glance.
Wests look strong across all grades which is great. Long overdue. Many of these youngsters will move up a grade in no time.
And although it appeared likely we now have confirmation that our 2 major signings from queensland last season, Hill and Dotoi have both left the club. Sad, as both were very skillful players.
