So cut the flaps off and slap them on the BBQ?
as a starving child LOL ,crushed up corn flakes ,egg wash ,stick them on ,fry, and a honey, hot mustard n soy sauce, but leave any fish refrigerated for a few days ,their slime will drop of n their taste is more mellow ,IF thats your go

When I was a young bloke we would have two weeks in May fishing the breakwall at Urunga, just south of Coffs Harbour. Did this for years.
Fished the run in and run out tides for blackfish and bream. Two hook rig under a float with long rods and centrepin fly reels.
Burleyed with sand, green weed and smashed soldier crabs. Green weed on one hook and a small soldier crab on the other. Never failed us and always went home with a full fish keep. Held the record for a 4lb 10oz blackfish at the local shop there for years.
Now that's a dying art , fishing for Black Fish. Wonder how many here still do?
I havnt for ages but have the gear still,,
just never the time or weed 🙄

Not be confused with a hairtail, pike eels are mean barstartds that you don't ever let lose in your boat, if they latch onto a leg or foot it won't be a pretty sight. We used to get heaps in the Hawkesbury while fishing for jew.

Lots still doing it. Go to Nambucca any winter day and about 10 - 15 blokes going for blackfish.
Pound for pound one of the best to catch on light gear. Shame the missus hates them.

Good eating if prepped Japanese hiraki style - butterfly, little bit of salt on flesh and leave overnight on a rack with plenty of air circulation. Draws out a bit of the liquid. Put in fridge for a day. Grilled is best.

This is me with a 270kg kg Pacific Bluefin caught off Bermagui on 10kg line. Would have been a record but I knew they wouldn't believe me.

Jesus. How long did that take to pull in?
I’ve caught a couple over the years (way smaller than that) and the buggers pull like horses.

Still have a good run of blackfish here at Caloundra over the winter months. Love watching the old blokes fishing for them using all the old gear. They are still pretty good at getting a feed. Weed pretty scarce up here so they use cabbage they get off the ocean rocks.

Fishing is like a game of chess, just throwing bait and hook into the water and waiting to catch a fish, can be boring. It's about finding locations, weather to anchor or drift, fish light or heavy, J hooks, or circle hooks? What baits, prawns, mullet squid etc, Lure fishing, plastics ,different colours, sizes and weights, line classes etc. It's the challenge that makes fishing great, open your horizons and experiment, then when you catch a trophy fish, it is so much better.
Must admit I preferred your normal j hooks on smaller species and preferred the super J's on bigger estuary species ...ie Grunter ...Salmon .....Jack .....Cod etc ...found I lost less bigger fish with the Super J's .......

Never knew we got them so far north ...my pop said you got the occasional one down the Gold Coast when they'd scoff down a prawn ......

Wish you guys would stop talking fishing coz it’s giving this old retiree( and dedicated non angler) the urge to go and buy some gear and give it another shot.
Once it gets it's hooks in ......barbs or no barbs ...your hooked

Well it didn’t first time around but maybe I need to have another go.
From where I live, Lake Eildon only an hour or so away so thinking about trialling some trout fishing .
Anyone on here got any experience with that ?
