Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

So Brooks needed a good forward pack to play off to return to his best. He got that!

But now needs an organising halfback inside him to return to his best.

We must be eliminating all variables!!!
Eliminate all tall players
Same height as Brooks so he doesn't falcon people with crash balls on 3rd tackle

Just looking at an article about salary cap ups and downs, they were saying about Mitchell going to Souths for $500k a season less than he had been offered by Tigers, because he Thought Souths offered best chance of a G/F win than West Tigers. And when Teddy left Tigers to go to East he took $600ks less a season than Tigers had offered for same reason.

Then when West Tigers offered munster $600ks a season more than Melbourne could afford he knocked us back, and his reason given to the Press was he wanted to stay with Melbourne because he would have a better chance of winning another Premiership ring. Poor Bugga he already has two. So he knocked us back on a contract for I think 4 yrs, so he gave up $2.4ml, how much do those rings cost.

Now we have wighton leaving Raiders for $200ks less a season to be with his Brothers.

His statement not mine.

the Nrl is an absolute joke, year after year we have certain teams up in top 8 and certain teams at the bottom 8.

Yep salary cap works well if you support a certain few teams, you get to see your teams make the 8 just about every year.

The salary cap needs to be based on an open bidding process run by the NRL. The player can choose to play for whichever club he plays for but the value attributed to the player within the salary cap will be the average of the offer accepted and any higher offers i.e. a notional market value based on open bids. IMO this could work once you iron out the details. Only problem is it would take away the incentive for clubs to make/arrange illegal payments outside the cap so the players association would never get on board.

What are the thoughts on bushing fonua pole out of lock and onto the bench then put luke bateman into lock depending on fitness and hopefully it would open up his ball playing aspect that we don't get to see as much as we should. I don't know what its been but in the last few weeks Pole hasn't looked like he wants it as much as everyone was saying he would. We have a handful of second rowers in development and if they are still not ready for first grade then maybe we could sign a cheapish second row to cover this. Even slot shawn Blore straight into second row wouldn't be that bad of an option.
Given the halves seem to have forgotten how to pass a good short ball to back rowers in attacking positions it's not a bad idea to put Bateman in the middle. The team are so disorganised, his unorthodox style in the middle might actually help.

Bottom line nothing will be done TILL a team like the Chooks slide down to the cellar and than all hell will break out about inequalities of the salary cap and the absolute fools who run the game will mandate sweeping changes to the system.

Personally I don’t get it, surely it is in the best interests of the game to have all team’s competitive , rather than what we have now. Okay individual clubs have to take ownership of their rosters and make smart calls unlike our club, but the NRL need to ensure all clubs have a fair access to playing talent and that it is spread across all franchises.

Anyway one thing you can bet your left and right on, is the NRL will not make any changes that will upset the teams that are in the pocket of the big end of town

South’s will go backwards, too many ageing players.
In regards to the NRL doing something about trying to help level the competition, I don’t believe e that’s their responsibility, they provide the money for clubs to spend on their salary cap, then it’s up to each individual club ti find the right talent.
When it’s not staring you in the face, you have to search deeper and find the hidden diamonds.
There is a stack of young talent emerging just in the KOE Cup and Qld Cup alone, it’s a simple task of stock piling the best of it we can get our hands on and if done properly in conjunction with retaining the best of our own home grown up and co I h starts, we could be flushed with star NRL players within a couple of years.
As an example there is a stack of young talent the Dolphins already have within their ranks, some of them won’t be too patient in waiting for their chance to become NRL regulars.

So if we re-sign Brooks, do we get a $200k or $500k exemption for long serving player? I remember reading somewhere that under a new CBA it was proposed to increase from $200k to $500k but not sure whether it was approved. And we have Nofa who would be eligible too, so is it per player or just per club?
What do we even need this exemption for when we haven't even come close to spending the cap for years??

It's not worth keeping with brooks or nofo just to claim this exemption. They are part of the toxic culture at the club and must go ASAP.

Spot on mate 👍

I watched NRL 360 today and it beggars belief how dodgy the whole setup is. Bad enough you have a high-profile agent with a massive conflict of interest hosting the panel. But then you have Paul Kent who it's obvious is little more than Ricky Stuart's glove puppet. Whenever anything negative emerges about Canberra he's rushing to Ricky's defence like he's a family member. When Bateman (who prior to Canberra had NEVER been questioned regarding his professionalism) was trying to negotiate his contract Kenty threw him under the bus. Then when George Williams (who likewise had never been in trouble at any point in his career) was struggling with homesickness during COVID with a young kid on the way Kenty threw him under the bus. Now Wighton is moving and Kenty's outburst today was completely bonkers. The question which really needs to be asked is WHY have so many top players decided they need to make an exit? For me the common denominator in all of these cases is Sticky - who is notoriously hard on his players when things don't go his way. Surely he can't keep dodging the blame forever?
It's all predetermined theatre for TV.......

For that reason we need a draft....the only solution

Its better then 7. Brooks 6. Wakeham

Would prefer however 7. Townsend 6. anyone but brooks

Same i'd be ok with the Chad for a couple of years, but let's not kid ourselves into thinking the club arent going to re sign Brooks. If its not already done it will be in their plans at least for another couple of years. The fact there isnt much on offer or younger guys coming through makes it almost a certainty unfortunately.
