Alex Twal #206

Same thread every year, especially when he's coming back from injury. For whatever reason he is a slow starter, people forget he is decent in his role and then inevitably he gets praised too much because he looks real good when he has a few games under his belt.

In future if he has a few weeks off I'd give him 2 - 4 weeks in Reggie's, but when he's match fit and found his rhythm I reckon he is one of the better career bench props going around.
in 2 years time he can Captain Reggie;s

We’ll have to agree to disagree on that one.

The stats seem to support what I’m saying, this the avg play the ball speed in the game against Penrith. Pretty quick against St George as well.

You managed to find a game where he was quicker, goodo. 😜
My understanding is that clock starts when the ref calls “held”? And doesn’t include the time the player is wrapped up securely and still has some forward motion. It’s very rare that Twaly breaks free in this situation and the defending team are comfortable in the knowledge.
He is on the improve this season, like others in the team.
You’re right, we disagree. That’s ok, I’ve made my point and you’ve made yours. We’ll probably both be watching this part of his game more closely against the Bunnies.

Agree with most- twal has been good and seems to be getting better each week. He needs to keep carting it up with aggression and find an offload. Certainly can’t fault his work ethic or his effort.
Just digressing a little - did anyone notice how Storm players all push up in A? They are moving off the ball in every play. There is support for the ball carrier on both sides and multiple options for the dh. That is winning footy!!

TWAL Mega Fan. Happy to see he has even passed the ball a few times in 2023.

Cant wait for that first Try
They used him on a run around play a couple of times in a game, maybe against the Panthers I think, the first one everyone was so shocked he passed it we nearly scored.
Anyway as most say, every team needs a Twal, just wish he could do a little more in attack. If he did you could probably start him and bring pole off the bench for impact.

😂 c’mon? His ptb’s are the slowest (not by much) of all our props, plus his technique of running to the D line getting tackled, then walking a couple more metres is a real momentum killer. He needs to find his front, opposition know they’ve tackled him as they go about setting their D for the next play.
I don’t want to bag the guy, because I love his contribution to the team, but just saying he needs to improve in a couple of things and let’s call it as we see it?
For some context here, here's the last 3 games as it relates to play the ball speed amongst our props:

vs Dragons

Stef - 2.97
Klemmer - 2.94
Twal - 3.01
Joffa - 3.47

vs Penrith

Stef - 3.68
Klemmer - 3.31
Twal - 3.17
Joffa - 3.56

vs Manly

Stef - 2.78
Klemmer - 3.35
Twal - 3.29
Joffa - 3.56

So to say that his play the ball speeds are the slowest (at least from the last three games here) is verifiably inaccurate. So, if we're onto subjective observations then I would argue that he, particularly in the last month, finds his front more than the other 3 props in the rotation.

To me, it reflects his change to his running style. He has started splitting defenders, particularly on the backpedal or over the advantage line (he can thank Api for that), as opposed to Stef, who hits head on to win the first contact, or Klem, who engages multiple defenders and relies on post contact metres, or Joffa, who is a bit of a mixed bag.

I think there has been a change to his approach. He used to get close to the markers and look to cut behind the ruck, but he now seems to be getting a bit wider, using late footwork to position himself in between defenders. Much more effective.
Absolutely. Great take.

If you want to put some real context to the discussion and make my statement verifiably inaccurate, then you would have provided the average of all games for all props.
