Sport Confidential: Parramatta bid to secure Wests Tigers forward Joe Ofahengaue in mid-season switch​

Armed with their cheque book and roster places to fill, the Parramatta Eels are looking to prise a former Origin star out of the Wests’ Tigers.

Parramatta have made a play to sign Wests Tigers star Joe Ofahengaue in a shock mid-season switch.

The Eels are on the lookout for a middle forward with the Tigers’ reigning player of the year now on their radar.
Discussions have progressed this week but Ofahengaue is yet to decide if he wants to leave the Tigers early. Ofahengaue still has two years remaining on his current deal.
Parramatta have salary cap space and a roster spot to accommodate the 27-year-old immediately, while they are also in the market for an outside back.
Parramatta recently secured former Eel Andrew Davey in a mid-season switch from Canterbury to aid their edge forward stocks.

The North Queensland Cowboys also expressed an interest in Ofahengaue, a former Queensland Origin forward who has endured a disjointed start to the NRL season.

He was dumped to reserve grade after the Tigers’ round 3 loss to Canterbury, but has reclaimed his spot in recent weeks, where he has played off the bench.

Ofahengaue is averaging less than 40 minutes in his third season with the Tigers, having spent the previous six years with the Brisbane Broncos.

The Tigers, meanwhile, are planning to blow the New Zealand Warriors out of the water by offering halfback Shaun Johnson a two-year to join the club from 2024.

The Eels’ forward stocks have taken a hit this season with prop Reagan Campbell-Gillard (groin) and edge back-rower Shaun Lane (hamstring) sidelined with injury.

J’Offa was our best forward last year. He’s now behind Klem, Steph, Pole. Now next tier down with Twal. Solid first grader and contract till the end of 2025. Valued member of the squad, if injuries hit we need experience… so the younger guys can develop. I wouldn’t just let him go..unless it’s for a good half.

It wasn't long ago people were saying he should be captain
 
Should definitely let him go if the Eels are offering a decent half or outside back. He's taking up a bench spot I'd rather give to a Matamua, James or Blore.

For me I'd like to swap a prop for prop so would be looking at James at 17 instead of Blore or even swap Blore for Simpkin
 
Honestly what does it get us? I usually think holistically about these things and if a player wants out so be it. But what do we get out of this deal?

Cap space? We have heaps.

Top 30 spot? Current rules dictate we can play people outside of this.

Player swap? They don’t seem prepared to offer a NRL standard player. Only potential.

Fix our ailing halves issues? We seem to be going hard for SJ.

Potential for Matamua or James to play to step up? Can’t they earn their spot? He has been dropped to reserve grade once which proves he isn’t a protected species like some.

Can’t really see any upside to be honest.
 
I like Joffa. He gave is all every time he went out. Was our most consistent player last year, given it was a bad team. Stand up guy. Hate to see him go, but if he's wanting more field time, I can't disagree with his wishes. Just not to Parramatta.
 
i know it is Newscorp and we should believe salaries but nrl360 Michael caryannis seems to think Joffa is on 450k this year and 600k a year for 2024 and 2025.

If true on that type of salary for a bench forward I would let joffa go to Parramatta
