Soccer Super Thread

France are a top 5 team I'm fairly certain? Nothing lucky about that win mate, it was all effort. If you can't appreciate the effort defensively then the game probably just isn't for you? I hate penalties deciding a game though.
Do you watch a sport just for the one aspect of it?
Where was the strategy to crack each others defence? Where was the attack?
Where was someone taking the game by the horns and creating their own fortunes?
Where was someone showcasing amazing skill?

NOTHING happened despite there being apparently good players out there, yet people are raving about them. Why?

After seeing Australia get bundled out of World Cups since the 70s, it's good to see that at least our women have cracked the semis. There's almost 200 national teams so that's pretty cool. Normally, at this stage of a WC you're left wondering if you'd prefer Germany, Brazil or the Argies to beat Spain's tika taka.

I know my last comment was deleted but this list is honestly sad. Politics aside, Babylon Bee is like an excruciatingly bad university revue.

The pressure these girls were under during the penalty shoot out was enormous with millions of eyes on the individual who could win or lose the game with one kick and the coolness with which these Aussie girls handled it made me proud !!!!
GO MATILDAS

Mate just give it a rest, it's obvious with takes like this you know nothing about the sport so just stop.

Slightly disappointing result for Spurs, but a draw better than a loss.
We controlled the ball for long periods but, like the Tigers, the finishing was mediocre.
Next game Man U so they should be a massive test.
Come on ye Spurs
As a United fan watching Ange ball was exciting. Madders looks to be an awesome pickup for Spurs, also unlucky with the Romero concussion. I wouldn't feel too disheartened mate Brentford only lost two games at home last season & they are a bloody good side.

I think you're right. Maddison looks like such a great addition. And I thought Spurs were great considering they lost their best player to Bayern only a few days before. Can't imagine how much of their training and tactics has been built around Kane for years - will take a bit to mentally undo that. As a Magpies supporter (at least one of my Magpie teams is playing well) I was really impressed with Tonali, and Gordon. And Isak! Villa lost Mings but still - what a first game. On to City at home which will be incredibly tough but feeling more optimistic than I should be.

Re Spurs, champion @Halbrowne61, I have to say that I like the first game of Angeball. Controlled lots of the field and it's only the first game with new manager, player changes and different mentality. Again, lots of football to come.

Re the other Magpies 😉, champion @full80, their attack looked ever so smooth. And Villa were no easy beats either - the score just reflected pressure and confidence.

Great omens for what's ahead.

Yes, I agree . Maybe I’m a tough market !
I truly believe Ange is up for the challenge.

Get stuffed.
If it is going to be rammed down our throats 24hrs a day, we have the right to comment.
With all due respect mate it's quite clear you have no idea how the sport works. Your analogies & how the game is actually played are completely different things.

We all have a mother, many have a sister and others a daughter. Being now 90yo, my mother had little to no opportunity to play sports that she liked and wanted to play, and sadly, even today there are parents blocking these girls from playing what they want to.

It is absolutely fantastic to see our women excelling on a stage that the world belatedly provided. They include mothers and future leaders, and some are also lesbian to boot. As a group, they support the marginalized amongst them, along with their causes, including their fellow national representatives forming the Diamonds.

They are not concerned with what others choose to call themselves, nor their preferences, just inclusive. Like most things in life, they and the game are moving forward, so get on board to support them, or please, just get out of the way.

Why don’t you explain it then?
To me it looks completely adhoc…just boot it towards the opposition goal and if you manage to get close enough, flog it across the face and hope someone sticks a head or leg out there to deflect it in. After more than 2 hours of play the other night, neither team accomplished what seems like a pretty standard task for professionals.

Despite this, it is almost impossible to escape the over the top fawning coverage they are getting. People crying in the streets, grown men screaming like they are at the colosseum and the media calling them superstars and heroes of the nation. See the silly soyboy post above for reference.

You are right, I don’t get it. I’m wondering why so many apparently do. Is it just social justice concerned?

If you’re asking about goals, the Matildas scored four goals against Canada two weeks ago and two goals against Denmark in the Round of 16 game.

There have been countless examples at the top level of the men’s and women’s games of matches that go for 120 minutes with no goals.

Example being the 2022 Men’s EFL Cup Final between Chelsea and Liverpool, featuring some of the best players in the world.

Sometimes evenly matched games with quality defences just go like that.

It’s evident that you’re not a fan of the sport which is fine but don’t understand the negativity towards our women’s national team progressing to the semi-final of a major tournament.
