Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

The thing about the Brooks cult is that they'll say "he's a good player" but I've never seen any of them identify what aspect of the game it is they think he does well.
He can't kick.
He can't game manage.
He can't give good ball to his outside men.
People say he can run, but it rarely happens.
He goes to water under pressure.
He can't read a game.
He can't communicate.

It's easy to scoff at Clune, but in the last 2 weeks he performed in all the areas that Brooks hasn't in his career.
I’ll bite cause it’s a shit post ;
Very strong defensively
Extremely fast for a half , and get on the outside of his man pretty easily .
Excellent long kicking game . Has a great boot . If inaccurate at times .
Has a decent short ball if a little predictable .
As a 6 he can more often than not make the right choice when in shape . Something that Laurie was diabolical at last night for those who are looking for comparison .
Good team mate . Well liked .
As in reference to last night and game she doesn’t play , he’s actually ok at game management , he’s just not elite at it . It’s definitely not his strong suit .
He rarely if ever throws a cutout ball , especially when in the advantage line , my guess is it was taught out of him earlier in his career due to it being high risk .
He can be half by numbers at time , which can be predictable .
But the highest evidence I have that he’s a much better half than clune , is one has a 4 year 3 mil deal and the other will play for Widnes next year .

By the way , I’m really glad we got rid of him, as trading him for the best 6 not playing nrl , is a pretty sure fire way to kick start a rebuild . But the anti brooks brigade are a bunch of hypocrites , and at times irrational to the point of it being nefarious .

I’ve been saying for months that Adam Clune would have been a good recruit for us for 2024 and now he’s had his chance to again prove he’s a better than decent player at NRL level.
He’s had at least a handful of NRL man of the match performances over the years, mainly playing in sub standard teams where he’s been made the scapegoat for his team’s losses.
Let’s hope Sezer can bring us the same or better.

I only ever seen him throw his short ball as hard as I throw my last empty long neck in the bin

Brooks was worse for the Tigers than Anasta.

Worst player of all time.

Case closed.
See I disagree in so much as Brooks was never an organising half-back but a good footballer who needed to be in a new club. I believe he will succeed at Manly alongside DCE and TURBO at the back. Honestly at the Tigers they have no centres, wingers like Nofo and a young inexperienced Fullback. Daine Laurie at Fullback for a couple of years. Was or is he overpaid for what he provides YES! He will prove the haters wrong at the Eagles.

Thought I would hop onto WTF to see what might have happened in the rumour department.

But I am out of luck apparently today has been dedicated to talking about guess who,
BROOKSY of course.

Seems were having trouble letting go of him, he is gone, wont play again next week, so its over finished no more of him, maybe just to comment on how bad he is going next year at his new home on the the northern beaches.

I wrote a week or so ago, finding middle ground is important because Staines also plays fullback and brings with him the professionalism of the Panthers and the development system. He demonstrated with his injury his willingness to play for WTs. I rate that character trait very highly. Are Weekes and Meaney available for 24? I understood both are contracted to their clubs next year.
I don't disagree about his professionalism & willingness to play. If he can be signed for a more reasonable contract- sign me up. Like I said, the player himself is perfectly fine & yes, he comes with a couple of intangible qualities. Meaney is under contract next season, but Weekes is available. Weekes & Staines offer very similar traits to be fair.

Bevan French is not the type of player the Tigers need. He's a slightly above average guy that is quick- pretty much the perfect mix to succeed in the SL.

Our halves will be the main reason for improvement in our backs.

But our outside backs need to be safe under kicks, at least reasonable in defence, able to compete physically & not give up dumb penalties/turnovers. Our wingers need to be good at churning out metres from dummy half/kick return opportunities.

Addition by subtraction- remove the arm wavers, shirt grabbers, catch droppers & mentally challenged.

For mine Doueihi & Tupou survive. Nofoaluma has to based on salary. Feledy is coming through. Reilly...not upset if he stays. The others can go. I know some love Staines, but he's simply not worth $500k this year or any year to follow. Yet to see his 'blinding speed' do anything of note. To'a is good for a dumb penalty & excessive arm waving every time he's on the field. Naden cannot be trusted to perform consistently. Kepaoa...sigh.

Young Lualili'i is in the mix. Bring in Hiroti for a third of Staines' contract & get as much from him as you do Staines. Hymel Hunt & Momorovski stiffen up the defence & match up physically. Are they exciting? Hell no. But they stop our backs being a liability. If the club wants to land a good up & coming player, you chase Alamoti. We need backs that don't lose you games.
How does Doueihi "survive" when he embodies all the traits you want to "remove"??

Have you even watched the cat play in 2023?

He actively avoided tackling when at fullback - he was a disgrace to the jersey!!

I love it how some Junior coach goes to Brooks "hey your a 7" and Moses "so your a 6" which Tim Sheens and the Upteen coaches since had to stick with.

I reckon the then 12 year old Brooks went "I like 7 it's my Lucky Number".

I kinda wonder if we should play "Moneyball" vs get a good 17.

If Staines is a starter in our top 13, asking for 500k instead of a market value of say 350k.... Pay him 500k.

The Alternatives seem to be to get fringe graders at 250k. Some people want "DEPTH" meaning fringe graders at around the 250k mark which eat up our cap. Stuff that, punt on a junior and give them a chance. Anyone else remember how we lost Momo? The great big DEPTH in having a spare center with BJ and Roberts.

Get people who start, get people who defend our back line. People who would be picked in the top sides.

Seriously we had a monster forward pack carving it up at the start of the year... but the days where defensive holes can be covered *cough* Marshall *cough* are gone.

This season was lost because we did not defend or train for defense. We cannot prosper while conceding a -248 points differential. That's a try and a half extra per game we loose.

Stuff reasonableness of contract if the player is a starter in our 13.
