Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

Could you give some examples of players that would fit this description because I dont believe they exist. IMO there would be very few NRL experienced forwards who would not be finding a contract in someone's top 30. Then of the few who are unable to, how many would be of a decent enough quality to realistically be used as depth or be the right personality that they can actually help pass on knowledge to the younger players? We then need to somehow convince these blokes to not only take an offer from our club over others but an offer that would probably be less than what they can earn with a job outside of rugby league.
Morgan Boyle (Manly) not being offered a contract there. Kane Evans (returned from Super League). Both only good enough for NSW Cup contracts now. Tepai Moreoa (Storm) may be another not offered an NRL contract. There will be others with deeper research.

I have a theory that Chris Faagutu will be top 30 next season. Here is my reasoning ...

- Played U19 SOO this year along with Feledy and Latu & Samuela Fainu who jump to top 30.
- One year older than Kit Laulilii who will be on a development contract.
- Is managed by Isaac Moses. We've recruited a bunch of Mario Tartak clients into top 30 contracts, Fainu brothers, Feledy, Sullivan. I would say Moses is using this as leverage.
- Another Moses client in Lachlan Galvin is reportedly top 30.

We may be going heavy with 19-21yos in the top 30 but I think we'll counter this with an experienced outside back like Gagai, Olam or Reimis Smith as well as experienced forward depth on T&T and NSW Cup contracts.
you're onto something about one of the young forwards being promoted to the top 30, but I believe it's Jordan Miller who's got a top squad contract for next year. that's what we did to keep him away from Bennett and Redcliffe.

Very strange that no one has seen nor heard about him since he made his JF debut.

I hope he's not top 30 yet (as Faagutu much more developed physically & has played against men), maybe 2 year dev deal with upgrade to top 30 after that would be more sensible.

Simpkin is the only development player who has worked out for us. There must be around 10-15 others who became dead-end players who never did anything after leaving, and while they were here they took a roster spot without ever having a chance of playing FG. Guys like William Kei, Dylan Smith, Reece Hoffman, Brandon Tumeth, etc. 1 out of 10-15 is a terrible strike rate and speaks poorly of the system.

Interesting jrtiger you mentioned Miller. Do you think he's a possible NSW Cup player for 24 ? It made me have a look at our forwards for 24. Working on the theory we need 8 FRF and 8 Backrowers for 1st and ressies combined (2 Frf & 2 bench)& (2x 2rf 1x lock 1x bench). Assuming Seyfarth to the dogs..Also, Tuki, Ofa, James, Ma'anamai gone..all Frf.. are we a bit light.. currently we have: Klemmer Twal Stef Pole( my opinion a Frf) and Sione Fainu that's 4 or 5 .. Our Backrow.. Paps, Bateman, Sam Fainu, Blore, Matamua, Laulili'i, Mansfield, Tumeth, Faaguta, Boyling.. Are we a couple of Props short for 24 or do they move a couple of Backrowers to fill the void ? I know we all agree we need outside backs but maybe a prop as well ?

Kane Bradley etc. Agree, the practice of dangling
a carrot must stop. Probably has already with
the new crop coming through, all likely to see
1st grade. Waste of spots like you mentioned

Maybe the identification of development contract players will take a turn for the better with Benji & Fulton #WeCanOnlyHope

Personally I'd love to us make a play for Adam Keirghan. I believe he's currently in the SL and is off-contract. Would be on the min deal and could provide a lot of value.

Had a good stint at the Roosters but I think he'd be a solid goal kicking centre option for us. Surprised he went to the SL tbh he was starting to play some good football before he left.

Euan Aitken is a player I'd be looking into. with Averillo and Farnworth coming next year he'll be locked out of the centre position, and Kaufusi, Bromwich, Lemuelu and Kerr take up the back row spots you'd think. experienced, proven centre who played a couple of years with Marshall at the Dragons and should be attainable.
Euan Aitken is absolutely trash. He's too slow for the backs, too small and weak for the back row. He also has no ball skills and weak defensively

Signed with Wigan for the next 2 seasons from Catalans.

What about one of Olam or Reimis Smith from the Storm @teddy23 (may be gettable if out of favour) but we'll probably end up with Hymel Hunt released from the Knights?

Wish our centres defence was as terrible as Euan Aitken

Valid point.

However the quality of a centre's defence relies on more variables than simply their execution of tackles.

Their ability to read attacking structures and effectively link with their inside and outside men is very important and difficult to quantify, other than something like 'tries down the left or tries down the right'.

I think Aitken's decision making at centre is pretty awful, but that won't necessarily show up on an individual tackle efficiency stat.

Its a very real issue that we dont seem to be able to identify the traits of players that will take them to the next level at NRL.Theres a giant slippage rate between juniors and NRL,and we havent got it worked out in recent years
On top of that,Sheens statements that we have the best juniors in yonks is a total falsehood when you see our actual results at that level,so most are no chance to be NRL standouts

Boyle has been terrible for Workers this year, barely reserve grade standard. Might offer something as an older head but would be a terrible as a depth option. Evans probably not the personality you want around younger players, don't know what his footy has been like in England.
Moeroa however would be a great get. Still offers plenty and apparently very dedicated trainer and a great leader. His teammate, and former Tiger, Jordan Grant another. Though Storm still have serveral spots in their top 30 so don't be shocked to see either or both retained. Plus we would be competing with every reggies team for their signature.

There are a few handy forwards currently off contract in Jordan MacLean, Nathan Brown, Brodie Jones, Bayley Sironen and Bryce Cartwright but i expect they will all get an NRL contract somewhere.
Then a few experienced backrowers that are handy depth but really only reserve grade level players in Chris Smith, Jack Johns and Corey Waddell. But not sure we'd want anyone playing in front of the young backrowers in case a couple of them can kick on a bit.
