Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

They're the modern multicultural world's Mortimer brothers.
Speaking of the Mortimers .. was out at Orange NSW the other week doing a Wine Tasting trip .. we ended up at an old school building, about 5 minutes outside of Orange that has been converted into a Cellar door and wine tasting area .. was really great .. then this young fellow came over and introduced himself as Daniel and gave us a spiel about their wines, and then his dad Peter the owner, limps over and talks to us about the wines as well .. hmmm tasted great too .. but it never cottoned to me who these guys were until i went into the Cellar Door and saw all these Rugby League pictures of the Bulldogs, Roosters, and Parramatta on the wall .. then I spoke with Daniel about buying some bottles .. and it hit me like a left upper cut from Mike Tyson .. you're Daniel Mortimer and your dad is Peter Mortimer .. holy crap .. what a donkey I am .. well i then proceeded to chew his ear off about Rugby League for next 10 minutes .. and I purchased 3 boxes of their wines .. :ROFLMAO:🍷:ROFLMAO:

There are some great wines from the Orange area,in many ways it is similar to the quality you can get from the Canberra region

Where’s he using it , it’s been months and apart from the two brothers nothing , is he using it on his holidays , there’s been many clubs making signings that I think we could have been in for but nothing , he better pull his finger out , or there will be bugger all left
We also got Sullivan and Sezer as well as the Fainus

While we sit and judge our outside backs on their 2023 performances we have to recognise that they were playing outside a halves combination that rarely took the ball to the line and gave them no time, most of the time. There are defensive errors in them for sure but in many cases thay are adressable. On the plus side they have shown, at times, that they could get the job done in attack.

We definitely need to add some strike to what we have - but I don't think it is time to throw the baby out with the bathwater. To be competitive we need to build depth; and not until we will have a competitive KOE side putting pressure on the FG team for positions will we have that.

We need to spend some cap $ on strike and mongrel to add to what we have and work hard on developing the Toupou's and Toa's during the off season. This has to be complimented with some quality depth signings, not top 30 contracts, making it a real competition for selection in both grades and Flegg week in week out.

We have young Jimmy coming back from and ACL, Feledy being developed, Reilly has come along and will be putting some pressure on. Then we have Toa, Naden, Junior, Staines and Nofa all competing for the FG ranks as it stands. Now it is time to add to that a real strike weapon in the centres that has some clout - Olam maybe a little quiet off the filed (not sure never met the guy; simply going off my experiences working with PNG dudes) but I think Gags could fit the bill in the same way Klemmer and Bateman have in the forwards.

While it would be great to buy in a brilliant young star - it isn't likely to happen - what we need is similar leadership in the backline as we have in the forwards. Someone to develop the backline by leading by example at training - doing the 1%ers and showing the young bulls how the game should be played. We certainly can't rely on Nofa to do any of that.

I trust that Benji and Fulton have a simialr plan - while Alamoti may have been a nice get from the Dogs he is coming from a system as bad as ours and into a system that will get the most from him. We need attitude, mongrel and leadership. With a couple of the right additons we could well see a most improved backline. Time will tell - but I think it is as clear as the nose on your face where our deficiencies lie - the selection dudes have made their halves choices - now let's see what joy they bring us as teams start to get knocked out of the race for the big dance!

I think a few on here gave us a bum steer on Reilly.
He is worth the effort over this off season to develop.
I don’t know what is happening in KOE Cup, but the same things were said of Bula before he debuted.
They didn't, he was genuinely lost when he first came over.

He has improved, particularly defensively, out of sight. It's a credit to him.

For me I think last year showed that ice and Bateman do not work as the starting second row pairing.

Our halves and the chopping and changing did
them a massive disservice by not playing to
their strengths & bringing them into the game
Tbh. Think we'll see a whole different style of
play come next season, right across the park.
Still a few missing pieces but overall I'm a half
glass full kinda guy. New jerseys too finally!

Are we due for a redesign are we?

Its a very real issue that we dont seem to be able to identify the traits of players that will take them to the next level at NRL.Theres a giant slippage rate between juniors and NRL,and we havent got it worked out in recent years
On top of that,Sheens statements that we have the best juniors in yonks is a total falsehood when you see our actual results at that level,so most are no chance to be NRL standouts
I don't think that the results in the junior grades this year are a good indicator of the quality of individuals. The injuries and instability in first grade has huge flow on effects down the grades. If they are in and out every week they can't build combinations which particularly shows up in defence, particularly in the KOE where defence is always secondary anyway. We also have multiple teams in some of the lower grades so the talent may be spread among the Balmain and Wests sides. There are a lot of kids in a lot of teams. If Sheens says there are stars among them I'm inclined to believe him. I do however agree that we need to be a lot better at figuring out which ones will make it and which won't. I feel John Morris coming in will help a lot with this, he had a lot to do with it at the Sharks by all accounts.
