Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

Twal is a player every club needs
For us he should be replacing Klemmer so not to have 2 slow middles on at the same time, Twal does his job being there to take the first hit and tackle anything that comes his way.
Some others might look bigger and faster but do they do the dirty work when the team needs it.
Stef and Pole might be more dynamic but look where they are when things get tough, who I normally see is Twal taking another hit up because they are missing in action.
Players that play alongside Twal would appreciate him a lot more than fans on the sideline.
Low money bench starter I’d like to keep.
If he can get an upgrade somewhere else good luck to him as it will be our loss.

i spoke about twal being a casualty a while back

the club are happy for him to stay, but his management have approached the club for an extension, which we will not entertain at this time

which i think is completely fair, he is a good player who has hit his developmental ceiling

weakes wants guarenteed first team football, which the tigers and dogs wouldnt agree too

not much else happening
but i would expect 3 or 4 more releases in the next two months
Weakes wanting guaranteed first team football is what I don’t like about player managers. I understand them trying to get the best outcome for their client/player but to demand guaranteed first team football when they should be demanding a club to help their player become a better player/person and work hard to progress for first team football. Weakes is not yet a 1st team player at any club except ESL.

Inflating their client’s egos & expectations!

Different to Mole & DT:
- Marshall told Furner he wouldn’t be required to finish the last 12 months of his deal as an assistant.
- Alluding to a Twal / Keppie swap perhaps
- WT not going to let Galvin go

A powerful group of Wests Tigers owners met with frustrated supporters before commissioning a review into the governance of the embattled club, which could have major implications for how it is run.
Less than a fortnight after their second straight wooden spoon, the majority shareholders in the Tigers announced on Thursday they had contracted ex-NRL executive Tony Crawford to put the club’s structure under the microscope.

The independent review is the most significant step taken by the club after claiming a second straight wooden spoon. No timeline has been given for a report to be tabled.

But amid further changes within the football department - the Tigers have told Alex Twal he is free to leave before the end of his contract and assistant coach David Furner has been axed with a year left on his deal - the spotlight will now fall on its off-field operations.

The fact the review has been instigated by the Holman Barnes Group, the trading name for Western Suburbs Leagues Club Limited, which owns 90 per cent of the Wests Tigers, is the first sign of a potential summer of change looming at the joint venture.

“The board of the Holman Barnes Group has commissioned an independent report into the governance of Wests Tigers,” a statement provided to this masthead said.

“The board would like to thank all members and fans of Wests Tigers for their feedback in relation to this matter, especially all those that took the time to sign the petition that was submitted through the hosts of Wests Tigers podcast. While we are unable to set a specific timeframe for the completion of the report, we are hopeful it is completed in a timely manner.”

Gary Barnier, the former chief executive of Australia’s largest aged care chain and managing director of Cooperage Capital, will join Crawford for the review.

The Tigers have faced increasing public protests from frustrated fans, whose side has missed the NRL finals for 12 straight seasons and have Benji Marshall taking over as head coach next season.

Supporters vented their fury at chief executive Justin Pascoe, in particular, with banners inside stadiums during the final weeks of the season.

On the field, the Tigers are preparing to move on one of their longest-serving players after this masthead revealed rival clubs had been alerted to cult hero Twal’s availability despite having another year to run on his deal.

According to club sources speaking on the condition of anonymity due to the private negotiations, the Sea Eagles had expressed an interest in adding the Lebanese international to their roster.

It comes as Manly prop Sean Keppie became the latest player to be given the green light to speak to rival clubs despite being under contract on the northern beaches until the end of 2026.

The Sea Eagles only upgraded Keppie’s contract late last year, but he’s landed on the radar of the Tigers as both clubs seek to reshape their forward packs.

Furner’s time at the Tigers is over after Marshall told the veteran coach he wouldn’t be required to finish the last 12 months of his deal as an assistant, with ex-South Sydney staffer John Morris arriving at his old club.

Furner, the former Raiders and Leeds coach has admirers at the Rabbitohs, was discussed internally at South Sydney as a potential replacement for Sam Burgess, who walked out on the club with one match left of the regular season.

But NSW Cup coach Joe O’Callaghan is considered the favourite to step up to Jason Demetriou’s staff after leading the Rabbitohs to the second tier grand final on Sunday week.

Meanwhile, the Tigers insist they have no intention of letting schoolboy sensation Lachlan Galvin leave the club before next season after the playmaker starred in Westfields Sports High School’s national title win on Wednesday. Galvin will move into the Tigers’ top 30 next year.

Missing in action - Stef had the same amount of runs this year from less minutes

If twal was on 300k the club would no doubt be happy to keep him and extend him. When he's on almost double that, that's where the trouble lies .

Realistically he's not a starting prop, and not really a bench prop either. But a solid reliable player.

How much would any club offer to take him off our Hands? If anyone takes him at full price I think he's gone. If they want us to chip in half then he stays.... it's not as if we've even come close to spending all our cap in recent years in any case

I don’t get that logic at all. He’s one of our better players. If he’s on double that and we have to pay half for him to play elsewhere, then we have 300k remaining to pay a player who won’t be as good as him.

The dogs inquired about him during the year. He will end up there

If true I can understand this decision. I reckon Joffa was great as well but he was a similar player who was also on big dollars.

We aren't the rorters and we can't get away with that.

Also don't tell you the gaps he doesn't close up cos he's not mobile enough to get there....
Also don't count the amount of times he's turned back at the goal line
- Most other middles in the game score those barge overs, at least sometimes...

That first part is completely laughable and simply not true. Twal makes up for others lack of effort and mobility by covering such situations. He never gets caught out being lazy or not mobile enough to cover a space.
He is one of the best middles in the game at covering space defensively

Our current side needs to be improved if you want to get off the bottom of the table…. Two years now they have only won 4 games …If they go back with that same team next season then do you really expect things to change?

although Twal gives his all…to me he is nothing special …provided they have someone ready to sign to replace him who is better ..then great… bring him in…

The issue seems to be though that they let players go ( Hastings and Joffa) and then don’t replace them or upgrade…

if they swap him for Keppie then this will be just wheel spinning, deck chairs on Titanic stuff…

Really?
- That must be why the team coming last 2 years in a row is playing him off the bench...

And all the good clubs are lined up around the block to steal him off us every contract year...
For mine - All the "Best Middles" in the NRL - Are at the best clubs.

So it's Alex Twals fault we are coming last because he is poor defensively? With that logic every player we have is poor defensively needs to go.

Identifying who can do the job asked of them every week consistently is essential to our re build. Twal is a role player, no star but a very important role player covering the lack of effort often shown by more talented players. Getting rid of players like this suggests that work ethic isn't of highest priority, when in reality, that is the most important thing, no matter how talented a player or squad is. It sends the wrong message.
