Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

Heard from a pommy friend who is involved a little bit with Wigan that we are looking again at getting Morgan Smithies
I think he’s probably an ideal candidate to fill the 13 role until Laulili’i is ready in a couple years for consistent first grade.

quintessential small forward, tackles everything that moves, decent short pass and will cart the ball up all day long.

anyone got any idea of his contract status?

If they undertook a formal review with all the fanfare and criticism directed at Justin Pascoe, there is no way he could survive. The decision has been made. Justin will be gone by preseason.
Yeah the way I see it is that Club will want to be seen to be acting on some of the findings, and a new CEO with a fresh image of trust & respect amongst all stakeholders could well be one.

Personally I've never considered good leg speed, late footwork getting you in between defenders and landing on your front for a quick play the ball as useless, but that's just me.
And how many years /times has he done this
As a front rower no one is scared of him or even his potential

Thoughts on Twals possible exit.....Meh, whatever. He's pretty average tbh. I know he can tackle, but so what, so can most NRL players. A bloke that's taken so long to score his first NRL try says it all. He's not unlucky, just average. We need to aim higher. If he goes somewhere else, he'll be playing reserve grade most of the time and covering injuries at best. Good bloke by the sound of it but I'm sick of good blokes that aren't good enough. I want to start winning.

If there is one of our players that teams
will be happy to take on its Twal. He will be a great pick up for most clubs who are looking to to strengthen there pack, on the back of a good year personally in a poor team.
Our backs were appalling this year and yet we we seem to be moving on forwards. Love to know who is actually calling the shots in relation to the team and player movements but hard to fathom that this one would be coming from the coach - he is a player with an attitude that coaches look for.

The Twal talk is interesting in that to me it says we are rightfully struggling to find homes for players we want to release to bring new blood in and because of that now looking at alternate options.

I don’t see Twal being let go early is due to cap issues nor do I think Benji would actually want want him gone but if it means gets someone new in then sometimes you have to make a captains call.

Be a shame think Twal is a pure squad guy & dependable. He is NRL quality as well.

I agree … let’s put it like this…

There are 28 guys under contract already for next year… about 25 of them played with us last year.

Do we want pretty much the same squad that won 4 games all year to be back for 2024 ?

I want a better team… particularly in the backs…

Unfortunately no one wants the likes of Kepaoa and Nofo…so we need to move on some middle tier guys that other teams might be interested in,,,

Now we need to make sure though that we arent paying big chunks of their contract as well,,you may as well just pay out the dead wood players instead

This off-season may have a kind of Penrith 2019 into 2020 look about it when out went James Maloney, James Tamou, Reagan Campbell-Gillard, Waqa Blake & Dallin Watene-Zelezniak and sure enough they jumped from 10th to grand finalists.
I’d love your optimism I really do. The 2019 panthers consisted of players that spent years in Flegg and cup waiting for an opportunity. And people are often quick to forget that the 2019 side was largely the same as the 2018 side in terms of personal until Ivan started to blood all the kids into the top grade in 2018 they were top 4 for 2/3rds of the year. Anyway we’ll see but we don’t have talent knocking down our door from the lower grades i feel we are still a LONG way off.

When I do a job around the house my wife will always give me "advice" halfway through on ways to do it better. I always nod my head and politely suggest she should wait until I finish and then tell me what she thinks of what I've done.
How about we wait until the recruitment job is done before we behave like screamin' sheilas.
Unfortunately the prior results would suggest there is reason to be ‘screaming’ regularly players let go with no better replacement

i spoke about twal being a casualty a while back

the club are happy for him to stay, but his management have approached the club for an extension, which we will not entertain at this time

which i think is completely fair, he is a good player who has hit his developmental ceiling

weakes wants guarenteed first team football, which the tigers and dogs wouldnt agree too

not much else happening
but i would expect 3 or 4 more releases in the next two months
Do you expect NRL players to take those spots being released or juniors?
